Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Al posted this new SB nation web site so I visited today and found this on DeRosa. Also, looks like Cleveland is ready to let their manager go. Was more surprised that the Cubs were not listed. Is the time to add DeRosa over?

After reading this and seeing the Indians this weekend,

they need a bullpen. Could we package Cotts and a few other spare parts to get De Rosa back? My hand is up on Miles going along.

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

A crappy reliever...

and spare parts for DeRosa? Come on.

we traded him for 3 prospects

i'mthinking the cardinals would offer

pj mathews
blake hawksworth
and jason motte.

2 kids in their pen and a potential #3 type starter.

similar to ascanio, guzman, and, casey coleman-ish.

i don’t think they’d want hart or patton except as an afterthought.

by tim815 on Jun 22, 2009 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

scratch the motte plus idea.

on the birds site, they don’t want to let him go.

by tim815 on Jun 22, 2009 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe the Cardinals fans would make that deal.

But I bet team management wouldn’t.

I agree.

That’s a lot of potential to give up for a half a year of a player.

by madcow256 on Jun 23, 2009 9:35 AM CDT up reply actions

We might be able to get the Indians to take Miles...

… just to equalize the contracts. Otherwise it’d have to be major-league ready young talent. Jeff Stevens, who came over in the original deal, could go back; they might have to give the Indians someone like Steve Clevenger, too.

I'd do that.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

by drewishdrewid on Jun 22, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I think that would be reasonably fair.

The Indians are getting Asdrubal Cabrera back soon. Miles could back up 2B and 3B there, and they’d get two ML relievers in Stevens and Ascanio.

by Al Yellon on Jun 22, 2009 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I tend to agree...

While I would prefer Cashner in that deal, it makes sense. At this point in the season, offering the Indians the equivalent of their compensatory pick, and a major-league ready player, is really where this should shake out.

by Damen Jackson on Jun 22, 2009 5:28 PM CDT up reply actions

With some depth in minor league pitching at Iowa...

… the Cubs are actually fairly well-positioned to help Cleveland out.

I don't think the Indians would want Miles

Eric Wedge has a man crush on Jamey Carroll. They might trade Carroll at the deadline (he’s a FA), but by that time they would be out of it and would just use Josh Barfield as their backup.

It may be a contract equalizer.

Maybe they’d take Freel once healthy?

by Al Yellon on Jun 23, 2009 4:46 AM CDT up reply actions

No way.

Supposedly, the trade for DeRo put them about $4M over budget — the owner claimed that he would lose money if they don’t make the playoffs.

Since they won’t make the playoffs they need to unload the remainder of DeRo’s contract — and they will have enough suitors that they don’t need to take a bad contract in return.

Depending on what the Cards do (or don’t do) to trade for DeRo, Stevens (or Hart) and Ascanio might be enough.

That makes sense, and I'd do it.

It’s almost midseason. There’s about $3 million left on DeRosa’s contract.

There’s less left on Miles’ deal, and some of it is next year’s money. Maybe they’d still take that.

Remember, Freel is only being paid what Gathright is getting. The Orioles are paying the rest of that deal.

I think so...

But we’ll see. No surprise about Wedge being on the hot seat though. That team has been a real underperformer the last few years, and after leaving Sowers in to face Jake Fox yesterday, he struck me as a guy not all that into the game.

I'd give them

Hart, Cotts, one of the prospects they gave us, and…. Ascanio. But they have to take Miles too, and that probably kills it… :P

There's no way they'd take Cotts.

Ascanio? Maybe. The Indians have a terrible bullpen.

they might take Cotts

or is his contract too much? He’s been pitching better in the minors of late, I hear.

No.

The Indians want young starters. Cotts isn’t a starter.

You might have to part with Sean Marshall.

Can I part

with Samardzjia instead?

I thought they wanted pen pitchers too. shrug.

Since Sean Marshall actually has a role on this team and

Samardzjia is, at best, a work in progress-I’d much rather see him go in a deal. But doesn’t he have a “no trade” clause?

but if I get to make my wishes… :P

I would love DeRo back, but there are $$ and pride considerations..

I think us getting DeRosa is very, very wishful thinking. First, in the current ownership fiasco, are they going to take on the $5.5 million salary (Cleveland will certaintly want to dump all of it). Second, and more importantly, how idiotic would Clevaland look to trade DeRO BACK to the SAME TEAM they gave up a bunch of prospects to get him in the first place. If I’m Cleveland, I trade with anyone BUT the Cubs just as a matter of pride. Poor Mark.. he really wants to be a Cub again…

by DisCUBbobulated on Jun 22, 2009 3:22 PM CDT reply actions

At this point, the Indians don't need pride.

They need young major-league ready pitching, and I’m sure they don’t care where it comes from.

Barry Rozner wrote the other day that his sources say that the Cubs are interested

…in getting DeRo back. If pride was an issue, I’d assume it would be more from the Cubs end but, apparently, the major problem is, big surprise, the ownership issues.

Personally, even more than I’d like getting DeRo back, I’d HATE seeing him helping a team in our division.

Thanks for the laughs, folks

After watching the Cubs sweep the Indians this weekend, the Cleveland side of me needed some cheering up and the trade offers in this thread certainly did that.

If this is indicative of what the Cubs will offer, NBF does not have to worry about Return of the DeRomancers opening in Chicago area theaters soon…

well, if Cleveland still thought they had a chance and wanted to roll the dice...

a DeRosa for a healthy Harden swap would be comparable talent-wise. Indians have a lot of offense coming back from injuries, and theoretically, that could take up the slack for losing DeRosa’s bat. They’d have to kick the tires pretty hard on Harden’s medical records though, and I’m not sure they’d like what they’d find.

And if Cleveland thinks they’re out of it, then I think Marshall would be a logical target. He’s young, has started at the ML level, and has the potential to become better. Oh, and he’s left-handed. That always seems to help.

You could fill in around the edges with minor league talent on both sides if the two sides were close to a deal, but if it’s the Cubs, I’d say that Harden or Marshall have to be the major component involved. Not Cotts, not Miles, not Freel, not Hart nor any of the other recycled spare parts that have been kicked around here.

He's gonna become a Met

Put money on it.

If Mets don’t make it to post season Omar Manaya will be canned. He might as well trade a prospect now to get the Mets to post season. This is probably more likely to happen now that Beltran is on the DL.

Or Cardinal

LaRussa and DeRosa.

A match made in Cub fan hell.

Indians traded CC for LaPorta last year, so they can’t demand too much for DeRosa, right?
