It's a tie ballgame I can't believe it - Bob Costas
And with those words a new era began for the Cubs 25 years ago today.
That was the day a change happened with the Cubs. We still haven't been all the way but in the 39 years before that the postseason was dark at Wrigley Field and in 26 years since we've seen 5 division titles and a wild card.
For those old enough where were you?
I was at the game celebrating my 16th birthday 2 weeks early. I am such a Cubs geek I had my sweet 16 at Wrigley.

I was at my grandparents house
like every Saturday afternoon. I had just started playing little league. I remember watching it in my grandma’s bedroom—the one TV with U.S. cable—and running downstairs to yell out every play to very uninterested adults. That day, I became a Cubs fan and a Ryne Sandberg wannabe on the little league field.
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

That is, 25 years later...
… still one of the two or three greatest games I have attended in person.

Just out of curiosity
What are the others?

I read the Costas quote...
and instantly knew what you were referencing. I didn’t realize this was the anniversary of that game, though. I remember very clearly watching it on TV in our basement – I was 14 at the time. That was also back when playing in the NBC Game of the Week was such a big deal because so few games were nationally televised (other than on WGN or TBS).
Last year I got that Cubs legends DVD set, and that was the first game I wanted to watch (followed closely by Game 1 of the ’84 NLCS).

Didn't Willie McGee hit for the cycle in that game??
I may be mistaken, but if i’m not, your scorecard is wrong.

And someone else’s name is attached to the game. Bet he feels left out :)

Yes, he did.
That’s the last visiting player to hit for the cycle at Wrigley Field.

IIRC (and I was 1 1/2 at the time)
He was named the “Player of the Game,” right before Sandberg tied the game.

If I remember correctly
the Cubs/Cardinals game was the backup game to the main game of the week. I was living in Los Angeles at the time and was hoping for rain so that the backup game would be shown. It did not rain so I missed one of the greatest Cubs game of all time but have seen many replays of it.

One of my Favorites
And I wasn’t even seven years BORN yet. There’s just such an excellent feeling going around the ballpark in that game, and just watching it sends chills down my spine.
I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to have actually experienced that.

1984
was the year i became a cubs fan. i am not sure when we got wgn on our cable package but i was eight years old that season and can remember coming home from school and watching the end of most games. with one tv in the house and a cubs fan for a father it was inevitable.
i remember this game every year because it is the same day as my mom’s birthday. i highly recommend the cubs greatest games dvd set. it is worth the price just for this game alone.
