6/23/84 a day that will live in Cardinal Infamy! And that's a good thing...

Forgive me if this was posted earlier today, but I wanted to make sure we all took a moment to remember one of the greatest Cub games in any (living) Cub fan's life.

It's fondly just remembered as "The Ryne Sandberg Game" for his unbelievable late inning heroics.  No one here should need to have this game explained and if you do, shame, shame on you.

So thank you Ryne Sandberg, thank you Bruce Sutter, thank you Chicago Cubs for giving me one of my favorite Cub memories.  Although I was just a wee lad, I certainly remember watching this game as it was (and is) my father's birthday and we sat on the couch together and watched the game.

I highly doubt this game means anything to Cardinal fans

Its called the Sandberg game for a reason. That game is all about Ryne and I would say I forget its against the Cardinals half the time.

Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

let us remember a very special cubs game, shall we?

however, you should never ever forget who it was against

it is a huge part of the story.

saturday national game, against the hated rival cardinals and two home runs off the best closer in baseball.

yeah, that’s kinda big.

Well, to be fair

Willie McGee did hit for the cycle in the Cards loss. Had St. Louis won, they wouldn’t have remembered it for years to come, like us Cubs fans have, but it still would’ve been one of the highlights of the season for them.

I assume we all remember where we where

I had a summer job at an Art Expo at Navy Pier. I would sneak away to get the score as often as I could. I was pretty much AWOL by the 8th inning. Don’t think my boss noticed.

I watched it on TV, the whole thing...

but this game means nothing to the red-birds or their fans. What is to be remembered is the up-and-coming Ryno hitting 2 HR’s off the best closer of the era; regardless of what team he pitched for at the time.

The only way a Cards fan remembers this date is by a Cubs fan reminding them.

Highlights of the game on YouTube!

Link.

Wish I could’ve been there for that one. Of course, I was only 2 months old at the time, so I probably wouldn’t have really known what was going on…

One of the greatest regrets of my life as a Cub fan...

…is that I turned down a chance to go to that game with two my friends because I’d been out too late the night before. To this day, they still bust my chops over it.

One of my highlights too

I watched the game on TV and remembering how at that time I felt we might actually have a good ballclub in ’84. This was the start of Ryno becoming my favorite Cub.

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

As noted in the other thread...

… this is still one of the best two or three games I have attended in person. The Cubs overcame deficits of 7-1 and 9-3, and trailed by TWO with two out and no one on in the 10th before Bob Dernier walked on a VERY close 3-2 pitch, just before Sandberg hit his second home run of the day.

I was living at...........

………..3643 N. Sheffield at the time, yes, right across the street from Wrigley, and having just finished college, my friends and I would be vacating our apartment at the end of the month. After all, who renews a lease simply because the Cubs are doing well in June?

I recall being on the el platform when Dave Owens drove in the winning run, and later in the day hearing Whitey Herzog call Sandberg “the greatest player ever”.
