OT: Michael Jackson Pronounced Dead
Apparently Michael Jackson was rushed to an Los Angeles hospital this afternoon. By the time he arrived at the hospital he was in a coma and was pronounced dead shortly after. I am not aware of the exact COD.
While I have not been a fan of Michael Jackson since I was about 8, he was almost as important to me as the Cubs back in the mid 80's. I believe he was getting ready for a final 50-show tour (although I think they were all going to be heald in the same arena). He was 50 years old when he died.
RIP Michael...

Alright, I know I’ll get the “walk on by, you don’t need to open it” shpeel but I really hope this doesn’t get Rec’d and doesn’t become the forefront of the talk for the next couple days.
I come to this site to get away from stuff like this. The guy was a hell of a musician but Michael Jackson—the persona— was a twisted and sick individual, IMO.

One less freak show, awful role model and pedophile on planet Earth
It’s very sad commentary on our society when 24/7 news coverage will be devoted to Michael Jackson. I turned on the Weather Channel 10 minutes ago and they actually showed an aerial shot of the UCLA Medical Center and the throngs of people outside. The WEATHER CHANNEL.
I do send out a prayer to the family of Farah Fawcett. Her battle against cancer was courageous and put a face on a horrible disease. Fawcett also selflessly opened up her struggle to the world so other cancer patients might be buoyed in their fight.

I don't think I've ever agreed with you...
on anything. Ever.
Love him or hate him, Michael Jackson is a US pop culture icon. He’s right up there with Elvis in terms of what he did for music and how many paths have been paved by him. You being shocked at the amount of coverage is just silly.
Elvis was also a pedophile.
Elvis and Priscilla met in 1959 at a party in Bad Nauheim, Germany during his stay in the army. She was 14 years old at the time. They quickly began a romantic relationship and were frequently together until Elvis left Germany in 1960.
What does that say about American Icons?

I agree kanderber
Why trash what he may or may not have done (I believe he did, but the fact of the matter is nothing’s been proven), it’s all irrelevant now, because he’s passed on. Am I excusing it? Hell no. But there’s more to Michael Jackson than just that side.
He’s not getting the coverage for being a pedophile. He’s getting the coverage because he was singlehandedly one of the greatest musical icons in American history. “Thriller” in itself was just ridiculous on the impact it left, not to mention he was a hell of a talent. The guy could dance and he had a hell of a voice. Anyone willing to overlook is accomplishments because of his negative public exploits seems very closed-minded to me. He changed the way we listen to music today, was an integral piece in the joining of rock to pop (ie Eddie Van Halen’s solo spot on “Beat It”), and influenced a whole lot of active artists today leaving their mark on the musical landscape.
Plus, someone made the Elvis comparison and I agree. If one is going to throw MJ under the bus, you’d better be ready to do the same to Elvis Presely.
RIP Michael.

Zachen
Sorry, gotta call you out on this one. I agree that he was a special musical talent and he certainly made immense contributions to music.
However, in what world is “overlook[ing] [h]is accomplishments because of his negative public exploits…close-minded?” So saying that someone was a pedophile and preyed upon young children and actually stating that this is a negative thing is “close-minded?”
Nope.
The role of law enforcement is to protect the defenseless. And that includes minor children from men like Michael Jackson. He was a unique musical talent. He was also a pedophile. And his legacy will be both.

It’s fine that BLou thinks this way, cause everyone deserves their opinion no matter how harsh it is. He had his trangressions like a lot of superstars, but it’s best to dwell on the extremely positive impact he left on the entire music industry.

I'm torn on the whole "skip the thread thing"
On the one hand, the original poster should be able to express an opinion/thought.
On the other hand, those that disagree with the poster should be able to express their thoughts, too.
As Tevye might say:
On the other hand, if still others want to disagree with those who disagreed with the original poster, shouldn’t they also be able to do so?
I honestly don’t know what the right answer is.

There’s a difference between disagreeing with a poster’s opinion and whether the post should have been made. If somebody says “I come here for sports only” why would you click a thread you know isn’t sports?
I tend to agree with both you and Worf on this
Because to post things like the comments you referenced seems argumentative by nature.

I doubt that's really your point, but ok
From your comment I’d be led to believe that if the original post is about “politics … religion … or world news” instead of the Cubs, that alone justifies crass or tasteless responses. I can’t imagine that’s what you mean. I can understand people saying this shouldn’t have been posted in the first place because it isn’t about the Cubs (and as you can see, its not MY post), but to invoke that as the reason why its ok to be tasteless makes no sense.
I can also understand why people who believe the allegations that were made about him would choose not to mourn him and would be shocked and dismayed that so many others are.
My “classy” response to BLou has to do with him calling the man a “freak show” in the hour of his death, which I think is neither original nor particularly tasteful. Whatever you think of him (and believe me, my views probably aren’t that dissimilar from yours) his death is still being mourned by hundreds of millions of people around the world, and I don’t think its too much to ask that in the immediate aftermath of someone’s death people observe the lesson that if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. There’s clearly going to be a time and a place for the discussion of his character and how it tarnishes his legacy, but do you really think right now is that moment?

Well..
I really only posted it because MJ, much like the Cubs, was an icon of my childhood – I grew up on baseball and music. Moreover, the news came as a shock and while I don’t post often, I come to this site numerous times daily and have found un-Cub-related news here before getting it from another source, so I figured I’d share the news.
I too question his insane antics ever since he started with wearing a mask in the late 80’s, at which point I stopped paying attention to him/buying his music altogether. Was he a creep/freak-show? Maybe. But I’m not trying to solve that mystery. This was the guy who wrote/sang/danced Thriller, Bad, Smooth Criminal, Beat It (bad wording in that title), and so on. Just like every other musician/band, I don’t give a crap what else they did in their life, I listen to their music.

I am more saddened by the deaths of the protesters in Iran
yet Jacko’s death gives the media fresh license to ignore this important story.
A brutal dictatorial regime rigs an election, beats and kills without mercy those who challenge the results and speak up for freedom, defies the global community by pressing forward with its aim to build nuclear weapons, yet not one story about this on the morning “news” today. Nope. All Jacko, all the time. Sickening.
Save your prayers for those brave souls in Iran who dare to stand united against the forces of evil, not for a deeply disturbed and disgusting child molester, no matter how good his music may have been.
"You have to have short-term memory, no matter who you are in this game. There's always tomorrow." ~Derrek Lee
That's the good thing about prayers, there is no minimum or maximum daily
requirement. You can pray for both and still have time to do what you need to do. I don’t think the good Lord will condemn you for saying a little homily for Jacko.

You can't compare the two
even though you ARE correct. The political overtones in Iran simply won’t fit into the media’s agenda.
However the popularity of someone – who IMO was great 25-30 years ago, recently not so much – in US pop culture will always rank above some more critical humane issues.

What gets me
What gets me is when people say how can you care about suchandsuch when this is also happening. I bet we’ve all heard this about our passion for the Cubs.
Caring about the Cubs or MIchael Jackson or Farrah Fawcett does not mean you don’t care about Iran. In fact I care very deeply about Iran, I have close friends who are of Iranian heritage and several are first generation.
Sometimes in fact when the world is all screwed up and going to heck in a handbasket the Cubs (even when they are screwed up or going to heck in a handbasket) provide us with a welcome distraction.

I'm not saying you can't care about both
but my comment was more aimed at the media. My wife had the Today show on this morning, and I swear, it was 3 HOURS of Michael Jackson coverage. Everyone with a pulse suddenly became commentators simply because they had an opinion on him.
So all I’m asking is just a little sense of proportion from the news. Do your little Jacko tributes if you have to, but at least report on something that actually affects the future of our world. I would say that a wannabe nuclear state run by thugs who kill and maim their own countrymen simply for wanting freedom and a voice rates at least as high as the death of a pop icon.
"You have to have short-term memory, no matter who you are in this game. There's always tomorrow." ~Derrek Lee
Shocking.
Even on the day a man dies, you can’t find it in your heart to say something positive. Or at the very least ignore the negitive for just a second and keep quiet.
Sad.

Always enjoyed his music
Had hoped his tour this summer went well. And had hoped for some new stuff.
I am a sad panda.
The Thriller album
is one of the best pieces of music ever created.
The man was a genius.
And he was also an abused child. He was physically beaten by his father. He was manipulated and used. He had to drag around relatives that weren’t one-tenth as talented as he. It’s no wonder he flipped out.
I don’t mourn the 50-year-old man. I mourn the 24-year-old who put out Thriller.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
At some point, you have to separate art from the artists
Marlon Brando was, by most accounts, a complete jackass. However, he is one of the greatest actors ever.
Jim Brown is an arrogant woman-beater who still thinks he’s marching in the 1960s, but watching films of him, and watching him switch from power to speed in one second is still the most exhilarating thing I’ve ever seen on a football field.
Charles Kuralt had an entire second family in Montana and listening to his deep voice talk about the beauty of America stirs more patriotism in me than any thousand political speeches.
Even Carlos Zambrano, who I think is a complete clown, can stir me on those occasions when he has every pitch working and every synapse in his brain firing in the right direction.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
Please
Please don’t compare Zambrano’s behavior to Jackson’s. Z never hurt anyone (except for a gatorade machine).
Or to the others you listed,

Michael Jackson was supposedly a Mets fan
as a Mets hat can reportedly be seen on being worn by one of the dancers in his extended version of the music video “Bad”. Im not really sure how that makes HIM a fan of the Mets, but here is the link.
I suppse that's possible
Although growing up in Gary, I’d think he was a Cubs fan.

According to the Huffington Post
Michael Jackson’s death nearly broke the Internet.

Favorite Michael Jackson song?
I’m a huge fan of “Billie Jean,” which I think is one of the top 10 modern songs ever created.
But the most underrated may be “Dirty Diana”

Mine would probably be Man in the Mirror
I’m a big fan of Thriller and all it’s parodies and dance videos. Those are always good for a laugh.
Dangerous or Smooth Criminal
I’m a little young to have caught him in his 80’s prime, but those two stuck out to me. Especially his live MTV Awards performance in 95 of Dangerous. Wild the way the dude could move.

I'm more disturbed by the insane choice of plastic surgeries than anything else.
How can it be legal for a doctor to do that to someone? Shortly after he became the king of pop and best-selling artist of all-time he pretty much turned into a madman, almost like a real-life Buffalo Bill minus the killing. If assisted suicide is illegal, how can assisted disfiguration be legal? I don’t think anyone on the planet could honestly think he was going to look better after having a really weird nose, chin, etc. added to his face.

I'm sure he paid very well
And there is no shortage of doctors who will, for the right price, put nipples on your buttcheeks.

What we are missing.
It wasn’t just the final 50-show tour reference in the FanPost that was aborted. There were plans for an ensuing three year world tour, residencies in Vegas like the one Celene Dion did, a Graceland type museum…
Its unfortunate younger generations won’t have the chance to experience his performances, and that he wasn’t given the chance to fix his tarnished image.

Michael Jackson
I have very mixed feelings about Mr. Jackson.
He is probably the best performer of his generation. And his appeal went across race, age, culture and gender lines more than any other musical performer in history with the possible exception of Elvis. My grandmother liked his music!
But then there was the other side of him all the accusations and the fact he went whacko. I think he was horribly abused as a child by his father and then used and abused by handlers as an adult.
And as far as the other celebrity death, I hope Farrah and Ryan’s son turns his life around which will help his mother rest in peace. I met Ryan awhile ago when I visited the set of Bones where he has played Max Keenan (the lead character’s father) a few times (and reportedly will again this season) and he was a very nice man. About Farrah I like about 99.9999 percent of young girls got that haircut in the 70s!

Also I hope that he had good lawyers to handle what his wishes are for his kids and such.
I hope certain vultures don’t get ahold of them.

Hey, I liked the guy in the late 70's and early 80's
But really, Farrah Fawcett was “the babe of the 70’s”. Her look struck a cord that began as iconic and never faded or faltered. As a young man when Charlies Angels hit the scene, I found myself undeniably attracted to Farrah and her 2 beautiful counter parts, Jaclyn Smith and Kate Jackson. The beauty factor of women hitting the scene today will always be measured – and almost always fall short – against these 3 ladies.

May Farrah forgive me...
Because her red swimsuit poster with the erasers helped me hit puberty at least 9 months earlier than previously scheduled…
But Jaclyn Smith made the rest of the Angels look like festering boogers.

This is the truth.
God bless the hair flip.
