Miles to the DL

According to ESPN in Chicago, the Cubs are expected to place Aaron Miles on the disabled list Monday with a hyperextended elbow.

The report mentioned the Cubs would recall either Bobby Scales or possibly Sam Fuld to take his place on the active roster. The move is expected to be made official before Monday's game against the Pirates.

Bobby Scales has earned another trip to the big leagues but with Ryan Freel on the roster the right move might be to bring up Sam Fuld.

Fuld has not played in the majors since 2007 but is one of the better defenders in the Cubs' system ... and is on the Cubs 40-man roster.

In 73 games for the Iowa Cubs, Fuld has hit .286/.358/.399 with 16 doubles and eight triples ... not to mention 20-for-25 in the stolen base department.

Stay Tuned...

Oh, happy day!

Fuld hits lefthanded. What we really need is an outfielder who hits RIGHThanded and can platoon with Fukudome until Reed Johnson comes back. Fuld is a defensive replacement/pinch runner.

Freel could play CF.

Question is could he hit well enough to justify sitting Fukudome.

by Poloplaya14 on Jun 28, 2009 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions

well

really the question is, can he hit well enough to replace RJ till RJ is back from the DL. that’s about 10 days, right? How many left-handers will we face till RJ returns?

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

Well, at least 1

Duke tonight for Pittsburgh. Then the probables show RHPs for the next 4: Ross Ohlendorf, Virgil Vasquez, Seth McClung, Jeff Suppan.

I could see Fuld coming up for a bit

Lou clearly isn’t happy with Fukudome right now, and with Reed out, we could use some balls help in centerfield. Here’s to more acrobatic catches!

Here, I have an idea.

So Taguchi hit a HR for Iowa tonight. He is hitting .306 with a .406 OBA. He hits righthanded.

Yes, he’s not on the 40-man roster. So what? There are two vacancies.

He couldn’t be any worse than what Fukudome has put on the board vs. LHP.

The Cardinals staff does an excellent job of making mediocre players play above their potential. If they don’t want a player (in a position of need), then chances are we have no business dealing for them.

FULD. Could mean nothing but he has played almost every game . Taguchi and Scales are playing. I had checked the score an hour ago and I was kind of disappointed. Now I hope it is a clue.

Fuld is faster, better defensively and they are pretty similar in hitting. I am little tired of the “veteran” thing.

by Al Yellon on Jun 29, 2009 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

The inability of this team to get EITHER sacrifice bunts

or sacrifice with runners on 3rd and less than two out has been a MAJOR factor in our losses.
I remember being at a game when a sacrifice was DESPERATELY needed in the Indians series and
seeing Blanco at bat so I said to my friend " well he just came up from Iowa so he probably still knows how to bunt" and he did.

The thing is

This team is not built for small ball. I mean we can’t even get a lucky stolen base. It would be nice to see more of it, but I don’t know if adding a player like Fuld (or anyone else from Iowa) is going to translate into solving the factor in losses you mention.

They go where the money is. They are trained to do that by their families and their union.

If you look objectively, you find a lot against the Cubs. Their locker and training facilities are Third World. The city is gripped by some insane curse talk. The day-night thing is irritating to some.

And not for nothing, other cities have much more lenient city and state taxes than Chicago.

And 75 percent of the players out there are going where someone will have them.

When Miles mercifully is done with the Cubs, he will not have his choice of places. He may hate the Texas weather and think Houston is the dirtiest city on the planet, but if the Astros are the only team that calls, he’ll go.

well

that’s a fair point. But his agent does have a vested interest in that.

The agent works for the player

If the player lets the agent run amok, that’s still the player’s fault.

But isn’t that what Hendry is good at — showing Cubs players that he does feel loyalty towards them?

No, no more than any other GM in baseball

he keeps them if they serve a purpose, he gets rid of them if he feels they don’t.

Exactly who has he shown undieing loyalty to?

he's been noted on this blog

as being the kind of GM who looks out for his players. Chad Fox is the usual example.

No, no, you guys misunderstand

I have NO problem with Miles signing the contract. Anyone who has read me knows I’m pretty pro-player in that regard.

My comment was more geared to the fact that this is two DL trips now for Miles and I believe the real reason is “general suck” rather than any real injury.

And a player with an ounce of shame would protest that. It’s lucky for us that Miles knows his only real value to the team is his willingness to NOT play through pain.

I really like Scales

but, with Freel on the bench already, Fox moving to 3rd supposedly, and Blanco, Fontenot, and Theriot, I think we’re going to see a Sam Fuld sighting tomorrow. AND, I believe I called this last week. :) Ok ok, i was half kidding, but still!

what is Fuld hitting in triple AAA

I seem him to remember him having a pretty weak bat? We need offense.

I would not too much in a few months in AAA but

It is interesting that he hits better when behind in the count and significatnly better with RISP. That would be nice.

Yes "read" which I clearly forgot to do while typing that

Perhaps I am too excited at the thought of Fuld making it up but that probably does not explain the rest of my typos.

He was in the 240s a few weeks ago

He has been hot lately. Basically little power, lots of speed, above average defense, good contact hitter.

He is a college graduate with an actual degree ( economics) and is likely the only MLB player to graduate from Phillips Exeter.
