Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

A FEW THOUGHTS.....

Why do I think with 5 games left and the Cubs 6 games out of first all the 'experts" at the major networks will still be predicting the Cubs to win the division......Can we also send a memo to local media and let them know Hendry's hands aren't tied by the ownership issue, but his mismanaging close to 140 MILLION dollars.....Isn't it odd that all the off-season moves were geared towards getting more left-handed, but our best left handed hitter can't even get consistent at bats(Hoffpauir).....Kudos to Bob Brenley for continuing to call out players for obvious lack of effort mistakes.....Whenever the Pinella era ends do you turn to Trammel, Sandberg, or Brenley....I'm not going to bore you even more with "this would be my batting order if I was manager", but wouldn't you take Bradely out of the 3 hole to try and take a little pressure off him.....

Bob Brenly

should come out of the booth right now and manage the Cubs.

by jmart231 on Jun 29, 2009 4:35 AM CDT reply actions

Im sure he'll be a genious w/o Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling

Why is everyone so eager for this guy to manage?

Remember Byung-Yung Kim

After Kim blew the save in game 4 tof the 2001 World Series throwing a lot of pitches, Brenly brought him back to save game 5. Kim promptly blew the save in that game as well. I don’t think much of Brenly as a manager. The Big Unit and Schilling got Brenly that ring.

+1

Just because he’s been a voice of reason during a trying time doesn’t mean he’ll suddenly be a great manager. I’d rather not go to yet another retread.

There has to be someone out there, either currently on a staff, or in the minors that is actually considered a bright young mind

we should bat

Dat Cubfan Daver first
Shanghai Badger in the 2-hole
Al third
Worf fourth
I’ll bat fifth
SWL sixth
Sue 7th
Allie 8th
and Ted Lilly bats NINTH AGAIN.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. Wow, you batted me leadoff!

Dude, I don’t know what to say…I’m totally honored. I thank you, my thank yous thank you, my thanks yous’ thank yous thank you. I promise to see a lot of posts before I type, keep up my decent on-point percentage and NOT get picked off by the Fanpost police when I reach base.

Incidentally, I took about 20 to 30 swings in a batting cage last week. And for a guy who hadn’t swung a bat against anything even resembling live pitching in at least 20 years, I did pretty damn good. I only whiffed on two or three pitches, fouled a bunch off and had some really solid contact on a bunch.

OK, OK…so I was in the “slow” cage, but there are few things more satisfying than that feeling of catching the ball on the sweet part of the bat. The only downside was I wasn’t wearing batting gloves so I ripped the inner part of my left thumb to pieces, and I also have an odd round, dark-reddish circle on the lower right quadrant of my left palm. But it was all worth it. I may try to find some local cages and make it a regualr activity. Pretty good exercise.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Went up to Door County with my family last week.

I made some cursory efforts to get online while up there, but I eventually gave in to full vacation slackerdom. It also didn’t help that the Cubs lost four of the seven games they played while we were there. I actually kinda reverted to being a BCB lurker – read Al’s recap posts and a few of the comments but that was about it.

The Decepticon I faced in the batting cage seemed to vary the pitches from low to high. One of my whiffs was on some ridiculously high heat (and I use the word “heat” loosely). Corey Patterson, all is forgiven! I couldn’t lay off either!

Hope for 2007 Second Half Repeat

The 2007 Cubs were only 33-39 after 72 games, two games behind the pace of the 2009 club. 85 wins might be enough to win the division this season as it was in 2007. The Cubs have got to play more spirited baseball from here on out.

How’s about trying a new title on for size. Not trying to be mean here, but you’ve used the whole “A Few Thoughts” title 5 or 6 times.

Oh and second on keeping your lineup to yourself.

Fear can sometimes be a useful emotion.

For instance, let’s say you’re an astronaut on the moon and you fear that your partner has been turned into Dracula. The next time he goes out for the moon pieces, wham!, you just slam the door behind him and blast off.

He might call you on the radio and say he’s not Dracula, but you just say, “Think again, bat man.”

A funny thing to do is,

if you’re out hiking and your friend gets bitten by a poisonous snake, tell him you’re going to go for help, then go about ten feet and pretend that you got bit by a snake. Then start an argument with him about who’s going to go get help. A lot of guys will start crying. That’s why it makes you feel good when you tell them it was just a joke.

One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take
my little nephew to DisneyLand, but instead I drove him to an old
burned-out warehouse. “Oh, no,” I said, “DisneyLand burned down.” He
cried and cried, but I think that deep down he thought it was a pretty
good joke. I started to drive over to the real DisneyLand, but it was
getting pretty late.

I’m not an expert when it comes to scouts, etc. but JH has severely downgraded this team from last year.
