Who's Killing The Team - Top 10
It's time for a weekly look at "Who's Killing The Team." It's our weekly look at who's killing the Cubs as they piss their fans off to no end, toiling in mediocrity. Lou is always to blame somehow, but I stick to players only here. Anyone think Lou might start eating pasta in the dugout just to ease his mind? I know I feel a lot more relaxed mowing down a big plate of rigatoni.
We go from 10 to 1 here...let's go!
Honorable Mention - Kevin Gregg - You're not helping by always pitching with a full count and giving up bombs to lose games (like Rayburn). Again with your Rick Vaughn look, you inspire me none and I fear that you'll meltdown in key situations as you've already done. Do they even sell a Gregg jersey? Who has one? If you do, you're a loser!
10) Aramis Ramirez - There is a hope out there that you will solve all the Cubs problems. Aramis has a lot of value and helps others see a lot of pitches. You need to fast track this shoulder. We need to know if you can be 100% or just a sign of a lost season. We can not win without you, just as we won't win only because of you.
9) Geovany Soto - Apology accepted although I don't care if you bake. Good week for him and positive signs with a big HR on Friday after the riefer-gate. Now get back to playing your position and making good swings. You've killed the team enough this season.
8) Rich Harden - Your game log is nothing but a circus. We've got from you exactly what we should expect: A few shutdown starts that make us dream big and a few shutdowns b/c your shoulder or back is "cranky". I was at the 2-0 loss to the Twins...nice start although Kubel took you DEEP. Wow! And that's the problem lately. Teams are hitting Harden harder than hard.
7) Kosuke Fukudome - I think that Dome is hated on way to much and I think there's a tinge of racism there. You like to wear the headband and then make a joke about sushi when he strikes out helicopter style. Admit it you do. You have a beer and then you make a Kung Fu joke. Some of his swings are ugly at times, but he's drawing more walks and getting on base more. His recent struggles have him on the list, but he'd have to get really bad (like Sept. '08) to crack my top 5.
6) Aaron Miles - The Cards have DeRosa (former '08 Cub) and the Cubs have Miles(former '08 Card). How's that taste? And he's going to the DL too I hear. You kill my team because you don't produce and haven't played since June 20. Why are you taking up a roster spot? Your shrimpy stature annoys me as you instill no confidence and you have a .203 avg as a switch hitter. LOUD NOISES!
5) Alfonso Soriano - Starting to come around? We can't ask this question all season. I'll never be comfy with you batting leadoff or chasing a fly around left field like an injured gazelle, but we need you to pick it up. You've hit some big HRs and that walkoff against the Sox. We'd be 8 games out if we didn't have you, so I'll cut you a little slack. BUT it's time for a 10-game flurry where you carry a big load. We're waiting. Rather impatiently too!
4) Mike Fontenot - Wow are you struggling! A lot of 0s in your game log. We wonder who will be around the Cubs in 2010 - Mike or My Boys? You're killing the team b/c with Ramirez out you've occupied an important role in the lineup and have produced nothing except that exciting 4-hit game at Houston.
3) Carlos Zambrano - The media love you Carlos. You give them a lot to write about. And that kills the team. You know when you're retiring, beaning, acting a fool, pinch-hitting, not drinking enough fluids or staying up too late online. You are paid like a leader, but don't act the part. A few hard-luck starts aside where you coulda had a win, it's hard to rely on you for a big game it seems. It's always something with you. An injury, a meltdown or a bat over your knee. Pitch. Like. A. Number. One.
2) Milton Bradley - You are a gift to Chicago media. They can just have a column in the bag about a Milton Meltdown. I was there for the brain fart toss in the stands. Thanks for that memory. You've been a circus at the plate ever since your first Wrigley AB. I'm tired of you already. I just want you to hit. Please hit. You're batting 3rd in the order and will be in our top 6 until your season ends (via injury or suspension or trade or release). Just hit! Please.
1) Carlos Marmol - On a team that's not scoring a lot of runs, we need you to right the ship. 38 BBs in 39 games (39 K too) so far in 2009. 41 walks over 82 games the entire '08 season. An ERA +1.40 ahead of last season. And you wanted to be closer? You're blowing the lead in the 8th quite well. The slider is filthy, but not effective 2 feet out of the zone. Watching you battle yourself on the mound right now has me reaching for bp medication. You are throwing terrible. On a team where it seems we have nothing we can really count on, you Carlos Marmol are KILLING THE TEAM.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. Whatever you do...
…don’t fall for “Icee Bits.” I bought some for my daughter at the pool yesterday and…what the hell are these things supposed to be? They look like the rocks you put at the bottom of a fish tank, have almost no flavor and are virtually impossible to pick up. The container came with this spoon/straw thing (spraw?) that’s almost entirely useless until the damn things melt. And, worst of all, when they finally did melt, the gooey mess spilled all over my daughter’s Cubs hat.
DFA ICEE BITS NOW!!!

I blame Farney
When the team needs a stand up guy who will provide leadership and kick some butt in the clubhouse, Farney has chosen to hide inside Ryan Freel’s head instead.
I also blame Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, and Billy Mays just because they’re no longer around to defend themselves.

I feel like Lou belongs on that list somewhere
His faults can’t be measured by statistics, but he hasn’t seem interested or at the top of his game this year. Maybe we could count bad double switches, inability to use a LOOGY, failure to utilize platoons properly (when available), # of players in the doghouse, etc. Singling out his most volatile player for something that a significant number of players have done already this year seems like the icing on the cake.
Not saying he’d be #1, but . . .

The TEAM...
Is the problem. There is no single person responsible for these happenings. It starts with the ownership debacle, then it moves down to Jim Hendry’s poor off season decisions, then it moves to Lou for not being Lou, and then finally on to the players who seem to lack the “i want to step up” mentality.
It kills me, for a team that has lost for so many years, we always need something or someone to blame for this or that. This is an average team at best right now, did we think we would be here at the beginning of the season, some yes, some no. But to point fingers is just silly, my father in law use to say “it is what it is”, and folks that is this season.

Marmol, Fontenot, Zambrano & Miles make up
four of your top 6?
Marmol is struggling, but it’s not him who can’t drive in a run or fails in the early innings.
Fontenot is out of position and having to play every day, none of which play to his strengths.
Zambrano is the 14-16 game winner he is every year.
Nothing about Miles puts him in position to kill the team. Talent, Roster spot, salary, etc. Should Hendry have signed him? No, but he’s nothing.
I believe the three muskateers of handcuffs on this team are Soriano and Bradley producing nothing and the No Trade Clauses that keep Hendry from making improvements.

10) Anyone except Josh doing minor league updates or prospect evaluations. Let the master do it.
9) Not nearly enough Bull Durham quotes. I blame myself, but I also blame you.
8) Whining about ESPN broadcasting New York or Boston. This would be higher, but the board has been remarkably sedate about it this year.
7) Trade proposals that are the equivalent of swapping Anne Hathaway for Roseanne Barr.
6) +1, +10, +33, +infinity. Just say you agree, or better yet, try to add to the discussion.
5) Too many Major League quotes. I thought long and hard about this one, and I finally decided the lake is in danger of being fished dry. We have Bull Durham. We have Mr. Baseball. We have Field of Dreams. Time to stop pounding Major League.
4) BLou
3) Optimism and pessimism without thought or logic. It’s OK to lean sunny-side up. It’s OK to lean black cloud. It’s just better when there is a reason.
2) The complete refusal to accept the notion that Cubs did and do bad things. Some of them used steroids and other PEDs. Some are bad teammates. Some are bad people. It happens.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

You don't need 10...
…If Soriano, Marmol, Soto and Bradley don’t hit they way they are capable, the team has no chance. If they do decide to play like they have in the past (and add in Ramirez), the Cubs will win the division by 5+ games.
Could they turn it around? Sure they could. But, this season is starting to feel like it will need a “a ctrl-alt-delete” at the end of it, and you fix long standing problems.
One of these days, Cub fans will realize one important thing; the GM has the most impact on wheter a club has long term success, not the manager, not the hitting coach, etc. etc……

Only need one: Jim Hendry
Let’s face it; he screwed this team up. We had a great team in 2008 that went a little cold in the postseason, and instead of trying to supplement it with a piece or two that might help, he decided to trade away the team’s heart (Mark DeRosa), replace it with a known bad actor (Milton Bradley) and let go of a player who has done nothing over the last couple of years but what he thought he owed the Cubs (Kerry Wood).
Should we have added some left-handed bats? Sure. But not at the expense of losing DeRosa. That was a price too steep, and putting Bradley on the team without DeRo there to balance him out was just emphasizing the worst aspects of the team. And those of us who were for adding Bradley — self included — should have seen it coming.
Hendry is responsible for this mess. If things don’t turn around, in part due to the deadline efforts of “Trader Jim,” it’s time to let him go and find somebody else. Otherwise, it’ll be a while before we see October baseball in Wrigley again.

I wouldn't have agreed with you after the year Wood had last year.
But as it turns out, Hendry made the right call on that one — not only would that have been way too much for the performance Wood has given Cleveland so far this year, but Kevin Gregg is doing reasonably well.

At the risk of sounding like I'm making excuses for Kerry...
…I wonder how much the change of organizations has affected him. Maybe if he’d stayed in his usual routines as a Cub, he would’ve felt more comfortable and pitched better this year. And, of course, there’s the issue of being a closer on a bad team and just not getting many opportunties.
In any case, I don’t really harbor any ill feelings toward Hendry for letting him go. It’s obviously impossible to say just how well Wood would have pitched this year, and I agree that Gregg has been serviceable.

Agreed
I still can’t believe the number of people saying that Hendry made a mistake in letting Wood go. Look at Wood’s numbers and contract and people still want him? In addition, Gregg has been ok and Ceda is on the DL.
Hendry made some errors in the off-season. Some of which I think was due to listening to Lou and the lefty obsession but the Wood decision turned out to be right.
by rlpete on Jun 30, 2009 8:36 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
My point was
Hendry got rid of too many character guys to bring in Bradley. If he’d gotten rid of just Wood and kept DeRosa, I don’t think it would be as big a problem. And plugging in Fontenot at second as an everyday player was ridiculous.

For the position players, collectively,...
It has been the Outfield, bench, 2nd base and Catcher. And the OF has been primarily the month of June, Catcher in April/May.
Bullpen has been too wild, but perhaps improving.
Managing has been poor. I think the GM has made a couple tweaks to address things, but has to make a bigger deal to improve the roster.
In terms of overall roster makeup I think the GM took a risky approach and his has not paid off yet (maybe it won’t).
