It's Happening!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Milton ...... see the ball hit the ball

Paging Jessica...

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

I'm here

damn have to miss part of the game tonight but not like he will be in the line up

I'm excited too Jessica

I got to know Sam a little bit when I worked at the Chiefs while he was playing there. Great guy who loves to play hard. Even though his contribution might be minimal, he might be a jolt that gets us thinking about playing good baseball.

how is this the wrong thing?

I’m not arguing one way or the other, but I’m curious as to why you feel this is exactly the wrong thing

I would have preferred Taguchi.

Not that it matters much, but that made much more sense to me.

Oh come on

This is likely to be for a WHOLE WEEK till RJ comes back. Having a guy on the bench who can run ,execute a sacrifice and be a late innings defensive replacement is not a bad thing.

I note that Sullivan's article...

… says that Fuld could be a defensive replacement for Bradley. Hm. Thought defense was one of the things Bradley was supposed to do well.

That didn’t make any sense to me. I think Bradley has been doing OK with defense.

Perhaps not fully healed from last DL stint

or Sullivan anticipating additional Bradley downtime this season.

Only speculating.

like putting RJ in for Sori for the 9th?

It's probably more risk management re: injury than an indictment of Bradley's defense.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Fuld is an outfielder.

I’m not sure whether his defense is that good, though. Maybe it is.

Will he be used in that regard, though? Lou didn’t seem open to using Gathright as a defensive replacement until the very end of his brief and much-maligned tenure with the Cubs.

I am pretty sure pre- season rankings

Had him with the best arm in the system and 2nd in fielding. He should be pretty good though of course so is Dome. Best thing would be to have BOTH of them in the 8th or 9th. However I suspect he will mostly be used as a pinch runner.

That'd be cool with me.

I’m all about defensive replacements with late-inning leads. Of course, the Cubs would need to have a late-inning lead in the first place. :-(

This is a complete waste of a roster spot.

We already have a lefthanded hitting CF who plays good defense, runs the bases well and can bunt.

So Taguchi would have been the better choice.

But Jessica gets her nice Jewish boy on the roster.

I like your Taguchi idea, Al.

So’s career UZR numbers in the outfield are pretty solid. And, who knows, maybe he could help Kosuke in some way. (Geez, Dome’s June numbers are chillingly bad.) I know Taguchi wasn’t exactly a stellar hitter himself but who knows.

Here's a money saver

If we were eventually going to call up Fuld then why did we ever sign Joey Gathright at the beginning of the season?

Just saying…I don’t know how much we paid Joey but we could have saved a few $$$$ for what Fuld is going to do.

by ak123 on Jun 29, 2009 11:57 AM CDT reply actions

The Cubs would probably say he "wasn't ready"...

…but it’s a good question nonetheless. They could’ve probably skipped Gathright and Miles and save some significant buckage.

by daver on Jun 29, 2009 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Wasn't ready?

To be an 8th inning replacement? He was ready to do that in 2007 and did so successfully.

Of course the front office might have felt differently but it just proves that was a money waster. Aaron Miles must have been insurance after we deal DeRosa. They might have second guessed Fontenot and figured get a somewhat cheap backup plan.

by ak123 on Jun 29, 2009 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Gathright was insurance in case Dome flopped.

When Dome was clearly not flopping and Gathright was flopping, we had no reason to keep him on roster.

Except that it was well before June when Gathright was dumped.

Kosuke better figure something out soon. Want to see something scary?

Dome’s OPS in June ‘08: .789 in 109 PAs.
Dome’s OPS in June ’09 (w/ two games remaining, of course): .531 in 92 PAs.

Man, this season has been tough to swallow.

Fuld got injured in early 07

He struggled a lot last year even being sent to AA after an injury. He played well in winter ball this year and has been
very hot of late. I do think he will be mostly used a pinch runner and defensive replacement.

Even more interesting Fuld stats.

He appeared in 14 games in 2007. The Cubs were 9-5 in those games.

I think this might be a case of mixing up cause and effect here...

Defensive replacements usually only come in when the team is winning (to preserve the lead). So I’d hope that the team had a winning record in the games in which Fuld appeared.

It’s sort of like saying that a team has a really good record when the closer appears. Probably 90% of the time the closer appears he’s appearing in a game with a 9th inning lead, so we should have a pretty good record in those games.
