Lineup of the Future! (Using Only Cubs' Farm Players and Young Players on the Cubs)

Well, so what its a bit early to be thinking about the future but here's what I think the future lineup will be:

Leading off in Center FIeld: Sam Fuld

Hitting in the #2 hole and playing Short Stop: Ryan Theriot

Playing Third Base and hitting 3rd: Josh Vitters

Hitting clean-up and playing Left Field: Jake Fox

Hitting fifth and playing First Base: Micah Hoffpauir

Hitting Sixth at Catcher: Geovany Soto

Hitting 7th and playing Right Field: Brad Snyder

AT Second Base, hitting 8th: Mike Fontenot

Hitting 9th unless Tony La Russa becomes the Manager: The Pitcher

The Reserves:

Catcher: Chris Robinson

1B/OF or OF/1B Doug Deeds

SS/2B Andres Blanco

SS Starlin Castro

LF/CF Tyler Colvin

Well Colvin might make it into the Cubs starting lineup in a couple of years, but if Tomimy John strikes again, he'll probably just be a hot guy off the bench

This must be the alternate timeline where Spock teaches Fuld how to hit

And the Cubs are able to unload Soriano’s contract before Fox turns 33.

I'd let one of the three go

But not all three.

“Ryno” isn’t hyphenated.
“Sandberg” is his surname.
Frank Robinson would like a word with you regarding your last comment.

Doug Deeds?

The same Doug Deeds who was just demoted to Double-A? He’s organizational roster filler, nothing more. Same for Brad Snyder.

Sam Fuld leading off? On what planet is this?

I don’t like saying this to people, so I’ll try to be nice: this roster is patently ridiculous and would lose 100 games without even trying.

100 Loses?

Nonsense. For example, if the pitching staff were Price, Santana, Peavy, Hallady and Sabathia it would likely win almost as many as it would lose.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. possibilities

if he was as fast as Usain Bolt and threw as fast as a 10 year old softball pitcher then maybe he’d hit a homer
otherwise he could get some reely cool arm growth thing then put the ball up really high over homeplate and grab a bat

You forget...

That Ted Lilly’s heart is, in fact, a flux capacitor and he is capable of time travel. He could throw an 88 MPH fastball, and arrive at home plate PRIOR to the pitch being thrown, giving him plenty of time to adjust to speed and location. The question is, is Ted Lilly capable of hitting the unhittable Ted Lilly curve…?

The part I'm finding most suspect is most all of these guys are players

who had a few years of major success and were known names. With all the warnings and lead up time, I don’t expect the actual list to have, eyeballing it, half of the players as former all stars.

I expect more has beens and never was’s/25 guy on the roster types.

Oliver Pere at 104. Misspelled words always make me leery. That’s either Oliver Perez or a really mangled spelling of Jason Bere.

And Matt Clement? I’ve never seen a scrawnier pitcher that wasn’t named Randy Johnson. I doubt this list. Highly.

First

The words future and Sam Fuld don’t belong together. Same for Doug Deeds and Brad Synder. The second baseman of the future is Tony Thomas .. not Mike Fontenot. Fontenot is not considered young anymore, and if he is Aramis should be in your lineup.

Sam Fuld blows. Fontenot definitely won't be at 2b.

And hopefully Starlin Castro will be better than Theriot.

by ARob1 on Jun 29, 2009 5:06 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Well, you don't say when this is going to happen

but let’s look at, say, 2012, when even the A-ball guys would have time to arrive. I’m counting current Cubs who will still be under contract in 2012.

C: Soto, Clevenger
IF: Ramirez (1B), Theriot/Thomas, Castro/Lee, Vitters
OF: Soriano, two free agents or trade acquisitions, and maybe one minor leaguer who makes it as fourth outfielder
SP: Zambrano, Lilly? (likely to re-sign), Dempster, Jackson, Marshall/Wells/Samardzija/others
RP: Marmol, Guzman, Parker, Cashner, Gaub, and a cast of thousands

The upshot? Cubs don’t need to trade for infielders, do need to acquire outfielders to replace Fukudome and Bradley after 2010/2011. Cubs may not need to acquire starting pitching (Z and Dempster will still be under contract) and have many relief candidates, who will probably be reinforced with a couple veterans.

Can't hardly wait.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Give me a year to work with

Let’s go with 2012.

C – As of now, the system has some intriguing catching guys as of now. Not great, but intriguing. Castillo still has promise, and he’s had some bad luck this year, but he’s still raw. Clevenger is consistent enough. If Flores can hit anything, he has a shot with his defensive ability. Cerda is far away, but with offensive potential (although some defensive inconsistency based on reports from the esteemed AzPhil.)

2012 guess: Geovany Soto has had his ups and downs this year. Here’s hoping he learns from them and reestablishes himself, this year, and in the future. My guess is that Clevenger will be our backup backstop, but that we’ll stash a defensive option in AAA. My hunch is that Castillo won’t ever pan out and by 2012, may be out of our system. I think Cerda and Flores could be at AAA.

1st base – The system’s first base charts are weak. That said, well, first base chart? Ha. Jovan Rosa was injured early, but that shouldn’t be an excuse for his struggles, as his swing and recognition needs work. Rebel Ridling is a big, lumbering power hitter. We’ve added, ah, the name is slipping me, but another Ridling like guy. Um … that’s it as of now that really stands out.

2012 guess: Aramis Ramirez gets moved to first base as we pick up his option.

2nd base – A lot of the promise at 2nd that the system showed in 2008 hasn’t really materialized in 2009. Ryan Flaherty’s periphs look fine, but gotta be a bit concerned with his K/BB collapse in June. DJ LeMahieu, if he signs, feels like Flaherty to me. Logan Watkins is a work in progress, as is Junior Lake. Tony Thomas’ K/BB collapse doesn’t give me confidence. Josh Harrison doesn’t get the reps there. I actually liked Opitz’s bat quite a bit out of college. Dwayne Kemp is in that Harrison mold, and will likely be utilized in a similar fashion.

2012 guess: Ryan Theriot. That’s just a hunch. I am big on Lake, and Flaherty/LeMahieu are both intriguing, along with Watkins at the top. I could see the development take longer than expected, and thus, have a lot of potential 2nd basemen in AA/AAA, but a stopgap is needed and I could see them shift Theriot over, maybe with a guy to split some time with. I could see a guy overachieving a bit, say, a Josh Harrison, and forcing some consideration.

SS – Darwin Barney has had a solid season. He’s a solid guy, won’t ever be great, but decent. Starlin Castro has had a superb year when considering all the factors. Hak-ju Lee is exciting. AzPhil speculated awhile back that Lee could be a CF consideration.

2012 guess: Starlin Castro With how well he’s done, it’s hard to bet against him right now.

3rd – It’s Vitters job to lose. He’s improved enough defensively. Here’s hoping he doesn’t lose it. Not much else in the system at 3rd base.

2012 guess: Josh Vitters.

IF thoughts: If the MI is Theriot/Castro, I’d look for them to sign a decent veteran to split time. Basically, a guy like what Alex Cora is right now.

OF: Soriano is almost a lock in LF barring someone doing us a favor with that contract, so really only looking at CF/RF. I don’t expect any vet right now to be there. The system has some assets to ponder. Wait and see on Colvin right now. Guyer had some bad luck in AA, but has bounced back a bit in High A. I still like his tools, and the fact that he’s shown some improvement in some offensive areas this year. Tony Campana could be a top of the order guy. Hak-ju Lee could get some consideration to the OF. There’s some raw assets lower, like Brett Jackson and Ja-Hoon Ha that we don’t know much about, and we just signed a speedy leadoff type from Taiwan. There’s also Kyler Burke. Could go on and on, but the short of it is that it is mostly far away.

2012 OF guess: Soriano, CF not from system, Guyer. Guyer’s striking out less this year, which is a positive sign, so I’m holding out hope. It’s hard for me to imagine a situation where the Cubs build their 2012 team from pieces completely with us right now. Just unrealistic, and with Soriano aging, I think the Cubs will try to find a potential leadoff option that could play CF.

So, a 2012 guess

C – Soto
1st – Aramis
2nd – Theriot
SS – Castro
3rd – Vitters
RF – Guyer
CF – out of system
LF – Soriano

Again, nut/ampdrinker, posts like this are what you're up against when you delve into these areas.

Nice to see you back, toonster!

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

why not Blanco

at Short?

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

he's got the glove

but the lack of offense makes him a better profile as a utility guy. Castro’s already at high A, and with his performance, there’s little reason to not expect him in AA in 2010 as of now. If he can iron out his defense (and the errors are more an issue of youth), he’s got enough offense and glovework to be a good one in the bigs at a prime position.

I could see a guy like Blanco as the MI backup splitting time with Castro and whoever is at 2nd base (in this scenario, it was theriot).

That said, I could come up with different lineups and talk myself into believing it as possible for 2012.

Quick rotation guess (the post said lineup, so I left it out):

Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster (I imagine he’ll pick up that player option), lefty not in organization right now (with Lilly gone by 2010, I imagine they’ll go searching for a lefty arm), Jay Jackson (should be in AAA in 2010, so being in the rotation in 2012 should be what’s expected and not a hope). I’m not sure on the 5th right now … I’ll guess Randy Wells, but I could see another outside addition, maybe Cashner if he really develops.

Guess on key spots of the pen:

CL: Marmol
SU: Samardzija
SU: Cashner (2010 AA/AAA, 2011 start in AAA with a shot at the bigs late, 2012 fight for rotation spot but may lose out, but at that age, the Cubs may keep him in the bigs for the pen).
MR: Casey Lambert (still love the fast/curve combo to be able to slot into a key late inning lefty role).

Young does not equate with improving

and/or actually being a major league starter. Your lineup is a 100 loss team.
