The Pirates have traded Nate McLouth to the Braves, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The Pirates will reportedly receive three prospects in return. Tommy Hanson’s name is being thrown around, but that has not been confirmed. The Braves desperately need a legit bat for their outfield, but Hanson would be a steep price to pay. Details to come. Jun. 3 – 7:06 pm et

That’s a good bat, for sure.

Believe or Leave ~Cubswynn 9/9/2008

by slcathena on Jun 3, 2009 6:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow.

If Hanson is involved that’s a pretty high price. The Braves must really be sold on Jurrjens.

by Tangled Up In Blue on Jun 3, 2009 6:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Disregard that last comment AZCubfan

My computer froze up.

Good point. Medlen and Jurrjens are good pitchers, but wouldn’t Hanson fill out the rotation nicely?

Can’t see why the Braves would mortage a fine future rotation.

But Mclouth is a young stud too

The Braves need hitting BAD. Fair deal if it is as this

and Pittsburgh

goes into rebuilding mode. Again.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

by Allie on Jun 3, 2009 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I would tend to agree.

However, Glavine’s velocity seemed up (mid to high 80’s) in his last outing.

by Tangled Up In Blue on Jun 3, 2009 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Seemed a strange time to release him

after they had him make some rehab starts. I heard on the radio it would save the Braves over $3M on Glavines contract.

by LT on Jun 3, 2009 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Incentives

He signed a deal pretty heavy in incentives. Not sure the exact numbers, but you could be right on at around $3M.

Still the guy is a future HOF for your organization. You would think that would earn him the benefit of the doubt.

Nate McLouth is good, but I think he gets a bit more credit than he deserves.

He’s a career outfielder, and his UZR/150 is -10.9. And he’s won a friggin’ Gold Glove for playing CF in 149 games, with a UZR/150 of -14.3 That’s good reason to understand that Gold Gloves are pretty much bullshit. He’s was an all-star in 2008, but remember, every damn team has to have at least one, and he was the only Pirate last year. The one good thing McLouth does is get on base (career .339) and hits for medium-power, like a lot of doubles. I think he’s a bit overrated.

He does it to everyone

He was not Maddux’s #1 "protege " for the last few years for nothing ( every time he showed up in LA Lowe’s ERA would drop in half so Lowe joked he wanted to take Maddux with him wherever he went)

Absolutely brutal. Despite what Lou may believe, this is absolutely one of the worst offenses in baseball. They continue to run these ragamuffins out there on a regular basis, even the statistics will show it. And no, it doesn’t have to get better….it can stay this bad all season long.

by krummy12 on Jun 3, 2009 6:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Lee is hitting better.

Soriano is hitting better.
Bradley is hitting better.
The starting pitching continues to excel.
Guzman has become a real force in relief.
Soto, Fontenot, Riot, all hitting under their levels, and are likely to improve.
Without our best hitter, we’re only 4 games out.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. by drewishdrewid on Jun 3, 2009 6:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow

Lee is hitting .250.
Bradley is hurt.
Yes, I agree, the SP has been good but not good enough to overcome an awful offense.
Guzman has been fine. Hardly a savior but a viable option. Again, he doesn’t hit either.
Soto, Fontenot and Theriot are just as likely to not hit anything the rest of this year. There are no guarantees they will even be marginally better.
Injuries are not an excuse. They could be without their best hitter all year which would translate into being down by more than 12 games at the end of the season at the current pace.

Hardly exciting clues for a turnaround. But I appreciate your effort.

Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

No. that’s not true. It’s called an average for a reason.

So what?

He hit well under .300 in the first month and a half. Don’t those games count? He was just as responsible for hurting the club in the first six weeks as he was for helping it a bit the last couple.

Average means nothing. If a guy hits .100 for three months and the team is buried and then goes on a tear when it doesn’t matter, at the end of the year you can’t say he had a good year.

Math

I think you need a math lesson. When you’re hitting in the low .200’s, or worse, a few hits a week will drive your average up considerably. Never mind average does not take into account whether you’re hitting the ball hard or when you’re getting the hits. I would suggest using alternative measures to support what I believe may be your argument….that this team is somehow improving at the plate. I’ll use runs scored as the true measure and I fail to see how that is getting a great deal better.

There are about a gazillion variables that could happen. You are watching so you must think there is some kind of hope.

Of course. Good enough? No. If the bar is set as low as the futility regularly trotted out in the 80’s and 90’s, then you could throw 25 guys warm bodies out there and be as good. There have been times that Cubs teams were indeed out of it by now, and time proved that correct. I agree

But by the same token, they can be worse. That’s the problem with the “it’s early” routine. Next week they could have four SP’s on the DL or more position players on the shelf. Or more guys not hitting or still not getting any breaks. The “it has to get better” routine is fool’s gold. Nothing has to get better. It can just as easily get worse. Really.

I don't believe it...

I'm a lefty, maybe Lou should give me a shot for a position in the bullpen!!

Doesn't his family live in ATL though?

do you think he just wants to hang it up?

I'm a lefty, maybe Lou should give me a shot for a position in the bullpen!!

by Chanman25 on Jun 3, 2009 6:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I mean I would request my release then too I guess

I guess he thinks he might catch on somewhere. But who would want him that he’d seriously consider?

Boston: no…
Yankees: they don’t need him
White Sox: hah, he’d hate it there
Mets: maybe, but I don’t know if they’d want to pay for him
Nationals: They’d gladly take a fading star as a face, but would he really want to go there??

I'm a lefty, maybe Lou should give me a shot for a position in the bullpen!!

by Chanman25 on Jun 3, 2009 7:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Out of the box but

Rangers. THey are trying to trade Padilla and I hear their pitching coach knows him pretty well.

It’s an option, but what would it prove to go there?

Runners go

Lee walks. BASES LOADED!

Wow. Riot would have been out.
