Should Vitters be moved up to AA?

Based on what I'm looking at, I think Vitters has deserved to see better competition.

Star-divide

Vitters is currently hitting .356,  13 HR, and 34 RBIs.  Given the 3B problem in the majors, don't you think it would be good for Vitters to see some better pitching in AA.  Maybe he would be ready to come up next year, or at least get a sniff of MLB experience at the end of the season.  I know we should not rush him through the minors, but it seemed like the only reason he was in Peoria was because the Chief complained to get him there.  Well, he set a team record for most HRs in May.  I think it is time to stop doing things that makes your A ball team better, and start shaping this kid up for the future.

Yes on AA.

Absolutely NO on bringing him up this year.

FYI, for those who missed this in the minor league wrap, you can see Vitters play at Kane County in Geneva, Illinois, if you are near there, from Saturday through Tuesday as the Chiefs play the Cougars.

I highly recommend you go see him

Just watching him for an inning last night, the kid gets it… he had a smile on his face the entire game… I think more than a lot of players I’ve seen in Peoria he knows where he is in life and how lucky he is to be there… he’s go a very fast reaction as well, which is only going to get better as the quality of his opponents increase from A to AA and eventually to the bigs in a year or two.

I don’t know what tickets are like for the Cougars these days, but I sat front row in Peoria for $10 – I highly recommend you go to some of these games.

oh, hey

that’s close. Hmmmm…

I’m rooting for my team in spite of the problems. I recognize the team is struggling. I root for them anyway.

yes

he should be moved up with those numbers and should not be rushed for any reason.

You ARE freaking out MAN!

by crw89 on Jun 3, 2009 8:49 AM CDT reply actions

No

Let him grow as a player at his own pace. I don’t see any use in pushing him this year. He didn’t play a lot last year, and is still very young. A push is for someone you think can help you in a year or two at the majors. Vitters isn’t going to land in Chicago until 2011 at the earliest.

by Nibbles on Jun 3, 2009 9:54 AM CDT reply actions

Oh, I think

you very well could see him next September—so that’s a little before 2011.

by Josh Timmers on Jun 3, 2009 11:39 AM CDT up reply actions

He should be moved up

but it has nothing to do with what’s going on with the Cubs roster right now. He should probably spend the rest of the year at AA. Let’s not spoil the future to fill a short-term gap right now (not that I think he would hit well in the majors right now anyway).

I like the idea of Ryno getting a chance to work with him at AA

How quickly was Longoria moved through?

Would Vitters be considered in the same league as Longoria was when he first come into the league??? I remember him being pushed through quite quickly. I personally don’t think Vitters is ready to be moved to the MLB this year, but a lost of talent jumps from AA to the majors, especially pitchers. So I want to see how he does against the future pitchers of the MLB.

by Don't Fear the Reaper on Jun 3, 2009 10:42 AM CDT reply actions

Longoria moved fast

But he also went to Long Beach State, a top 10 baseball program, for three years and was three years older than Vitters when drafted.

At the same age that Josh Vitters is playing for Peoria right now, Evan Longoria had just finished up his freshman year as a Long Beach State Dirtbag.

by Josh Timmers on Jun 3, 2009 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Was just about to write the same thing.

Longoria was the 3rd pick in 2006.
Vitters was the 3rd pick in 2007.

The age difference, will make a difference in progression.

Let's wait to see if he continues his success at higher levels

before we try comparing him to one of the best young players in the league.

Longoria was drafted in 2006 and made it up to AA that year. The next year he started again in AA before a late season promotion to AAA. In 2008, he failed to make the major league roster out of spring training and started the year again in AAA. When Willy Aybar went down in April that was his chance, and he made it to the majors, at the age of 22.

It’s important to note that Vitters is still only 19, and spent no time in college like Longoria.

by madcow256 on Jun 3, 2009 11:13 AM CDT reply actions

I don't think Longoria "failed" to make the roster out of spring training.

Aybar was merely there to keep the seat warm anyway…

It was more of a contract status issue. They signed Longoria to a long-term deal, the week they brought him up.

How about Daytona first?

I do think he should be moved, but I’d at least try him in High-A before moving him to AA.

I'm sure Daytona is lobbying the Cubs to at least make a pit stop there...

Send him up to AA

And if we’re out of it in September, maybe call him up to fill up the roster — and let Aramis get surgery early.

But in no way shape or form does he come up with the team still in it.

by Worf on Jun 3, 2009 11:43 AM CDT reply actions

This team

as currently configured, will not be in it in September. This, unfortunately, is not a very good team, when you consider the bullpen weakness, and the lack of production from the infield. And a catcher who appears to be overweight and out of condition.

He (Soto) looked terrible behind he plate in Atlanta last night.

by Tekboy on Jun 3, 2009 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Not only could he not move quickly...

He was calling some questionable pitches to Wells late in the game.

A guy up to lay down a sac bunt, and Soto’s calling 3 straight pitches low and in, leading to a crappy pitcher’s count. I’ve always been told you either go up and tight on him, to forced a popped up bunt, or just simply throw a strike and take the out.

Each of those pitches hit Soto right in the mit, without moving… right where Soto asked for them to be.

Well it has to be a fastball.

Then you just have to have him not get it on the bottom of the bat. Even if he gets it in the middle it will pop up or go foul.

Why Vitters isn't playing at Daytona is beyond me

I don’t get it.

Awww, come on guys, it's so simple maybe you need a refresher course. It's all ball bearings ...

by BLou on Jun 3, 2009 12:45 PM CDT reply actions

On a side note...

Vitters has committed 9 errors this season so far in 46 games.

I don’t know how much of that is due to bad fielding… bad playing surfaces… extra efforts to make a play, etc, etc.

Perhaps a better playing surface at a higher level would help. But, that’s wishful thinking.

Also...

Vitters is in serious contention for the Triple Crown in the Midwest League.

2nd in BA at .356 (Charles Cutler .378)
2nd in HR at 13 (Kyle Russell with 14)
6th in RBI at 34( Kyle Russell with 42)

Russell is a RF for the Dodgers
Cutler is a C for the Cardinals

That's irrelevant for any top prospect in a system

Vying for Triple Crowns in the minors is something that the Sam Fulds and Jake Fox’s of the world do. Not the top prospect within your system. Vitters needs to progress through the system on a designated plan. And I’m sure he is. But for the life of me I do not understand why he isn’t at Daytona right now.

Awww, come on guys, it's so simple maybe you need a refresher course. It's all ball bearings ...

by BLou on Jun 3, 2009 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions

That may be irrelevant to you.

But, I’d say it’s pretty noteworthy for the top position prospect in our system. You want to see him to excel everywhere he plays, and right now, he’s among the best in that league. The other two top stars (Cutler and Russell), are both 3 years older than him.

I tend to agree with BLou on this one. Minor league individual awards are pretty far down on the

list of acheivements. The important thing now is to make sure that his progress to the big leagues is as swift and smooth as possible. If he is dominating A ball, then he should be moved up. There is nothing to be gained to have great stats in a lower league, it’s just slowing his development. AA is where he needs to be as soon as possible.

Calling Him Up This Year...No

I’m as excited for Vitters as anyone else, but I don’t see the point in starting his option clock any sooner than would be justified. The guy still has a lot of development and coaching that he needs to receive. He won’t get that as a token callup in September who gets limited playing time and rides pine.

There’s absolutely no need to rush him. Has everyone forgotten the Corey Patterson disaster? He flew through the Cubs’ system, was yo-yoed, and was a huge flop. Perhaps his career track would have been the same had he taken a traditional route, but I think there is a lot to be said for the dangers of rushing promising young players. You don’t want them to develop bad habits. You don’t want them to end up in a situation where they’re so horribly overmatched that their confidence is ruined. I think C-Patt would have been better off had the Cubs been more patient with him and realized that he had strike zone issues that could have been better addressed with more time and coaching in the minors, rather than being thrown into the fire.

Plus, while Vitters had a scorching hot May, it was one month. He has the tools and the talent to continue hitting like this, but there’s a distinct possibility that teams will develop better scouting reports and expose his weaknesses. Heck, he might even fall into a slump of his own making. One month standing on its own does not justify a prospect’s promotion. I think he’ll end up in High A at some point this season, but probably not until the second half of the season.

There’s another matter regarding double jumping Vitters to AA. There’s a well-established history of Cubs prospects mashing the ball in the Midwest League, only to move up to the Florida State League and find themselves over-matched. Vitters does not have the same flaws as, say, Brian Dopirak. However, I think there’s something to be said for using the FSL as a proving ground for hitters. High A is where a lot of hitters start coming across good secondary pitches on a regular basis. Rather than give Vitters a complete and total shock to the system by jumping him to AA, a jump to High A would be a much better way to introduce him to higher quality pitchers.

Finally, Vitters has one glaring weakness in his game that he absolutely needs to address through coaching, practice, and repetition. His defense at 3B still needs a lot of work before it will be major league quality. I think he could be an above average defensive 3B in the future, but frankly, it will take him a lot of time to get there. He can only get that time by playing 3B every day in the minors, working with his coaches, and learning from his mistakes in the field. He won’t get that in the majors as a September callup.

The Cubs should not call him up until 2011. There won’t be any room on the roster for him unless Ramirez opts out after 2010 and/or the Cubs decide not to re-sign Lee after 2010 (meaning Ramirez could shift over to 1B). He’d be wasted as an outfielder, to boot.

In other words: be patient with him!

by Outshined_One on Jun 3, 2009 1:35 PM CDT reply actions

His numbers are very good

but it is not like he is just totally blowing everything away. Most moves are made during the minor league All Star
Break and I see no reason to change that.

P.S

Do we know how good his FIELDING is ? The last thing we need is another all hit no field player so perhaps they are holding him back to
make sure his fielding is up to snuff.

is OK. Not great, but OK.
