This is what's left of Tiger Stadium. Detroit's Economic Development Corp. voted yesterday to tear the rest of it down, even though there are proposals to redevelop it and save the field for youth baseball.

that's kind of sad.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the conference series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

Was by there a few weeks ago

I was in Detroit for the first game of the Hawks/Red Wings series a few weeks ago, and we decided after the game to take a drive by and check out Tiger Stadium. I attached a few pictures. Sadly, it basically has turned into a dump and it is unfortunate that the city couldn’t save it. It was strange looking at this and thinking Babe Ruth once played here. Yes, it is not in the greatest neighborhood, but you would think the fans would have put enough pressure on the city to keep this park before it turned into what it is now.

Do something quick

I watched a show on the History Channel a few weeks back about what happens when humans leave the planet. Gary, IN, got some nice air time. Renovate Tiger Stadium as a youth sports area, or tear it down and plant some trees. Don’t just let it rot to an inglorious death.

SO SAD.........

My dad was a huge Tigers fan so we spent alot of time at Michigan and Trumbull . I went there last summer with some buddies . It looked bad too bad they could not save it . It now is time to level all the property as sad as it may be . Detroit had a chance to save this National Landmark and did not . The area around it ( Corktown ) is also going thru hardtimes it will never be what it once was …….

It's unfortunate nothing could be done

There were some great plans to save this last part, but the city and the Tigers would hear non of it. I’m actually surprised they even gave the group a chance, and saved this last part, even for a short time.
I wish they would have kept the entire park, and turned into a minor league park, with a Detroit Sports Hall of Fame, a restaurant, etc. It could’ve hosted High School games, college, and the occasional Tigers throwback game. I envisioned something truly spectacular. Unfortunately, with no support from the city or Tigers, any plan was bound to fail. They both did everything they could to prevent the ballpark to live on.
If only I was a few years older, and had a few more dollars…

How many Baseball fans realize...

that very spot is the actual “ground zero” of where the Cubs won their last World Series in 1908?

I live just 15 miles from Tiger Stadium and regularly stop by there and cry a little on the inside, knowing all of the baseball history that took place on that very spot! Kind a cool to be one of only a few Cub fans to live so close to the last link of Cub “glory” in 1908.

One other little “tidbit”…in the picture, one can see the RF (visitor’s) dugout. That is where Lou Gehrig sat on the steps after taking himself out of the lineup during his last game in the majors.

If you think you've seen it all...just wait!

I'm guessing once they tear it down...

… that spot stays vacant for a very long time. Detroit has been one of the hardest-hit cities by the current economic troubles, and that’s in a rough part of town. I doubt there’s any money to do anything else with it.

Yeah, you're right.

the city has no money (in fact they are about $350 million in the red) and the local Tiger Stadium Fan club tried to raise $30 million to save it as a museum/retail area, but only came up with $4 million.

Nobody (municipal, state or private) around here has any “extra” money, so that is why the city just wants to get rid of it.

Really sad!

Since you're going...

…. drive on by Michigan & Trumbull to see… if it’s there, take pictures and post them.

EVERY SUMMER VACATION

for our family started with a trip to Tiger Stadium . Since my parents were both from Detroit I guess that only made since . My dad was a huge supporter of Detroit teams . I am glad he is not here to see what has become of Tiger Stadium . The area around it at one time was like a mini Wrigleyville with about 6-7 sports bars and clean restaurants . Now the only one left is Nemo’s . Alot of baseball history will fade away soon at Michigan and Trumbull………
