McLouth Traded to Atlanta
Pirates OF Nate McLouth has been traded to Atlanta for three of the Braves' top 10 prospects. I'd imagine McLouth would be in uniform tomorrow night.
This should clear the way for Pittsburgh to call up Andrew McCutchen from Triple-A, so file that away for the next time the Cubs play the Buccos.

Wow is right
If I were as big of a Pirates fan as I am a Cubs fan I’d probably walk away from the team.
First Bay and then McLouth. Do you even give your fans a reason to cheer anymore, buy a T-Shirt, bother to even know who’s on the team? That’s a spit in the face to their entire remaining fanbase.
Pirates got a king's ransom from Atlanta
And they have Andrew McCutcheon waiting in the wings to take over in centerfield. I like Nate McLouth, but he isn’t all that he is cracked up to be. Atlanta got a decent ballplayer for sure, but I sense that Pittsburgh comes out of this in even better shape. McCutcheon has a chance to be a Curtis Granderson type. An electric ballplayer.
Awww, come on guys, it's so simple maybe you need a refresher course. It's all ball bearings ...
I've been wary of Braves pitching prospects
since Ruben Quevedo and Micah Bowie. The guys in this trade are decent prospects, but not exceptional.
Fontenot (fon-te-no): Cajun for "scrappy"
Frank Wren is running the show and no longer John Schuerholz
He already made a trade with the White Sox for Javy Vazquez that he might regret. Catcher Tyler Flowers is winning rave reviews for his hitting ability and potential.

The Braves kept the one guy who's really going to be good.
Tommy Hanson, who will be called up and start against the Brewers this weekend.

Tommy Hanson might just be the best pitching prospect in all of baseball

They have Brian McCann
And Vasquez is an excellent pitcher.

Vasquez is a paper tiger who melts under pressure
Some of the best stuff in baseball but he forever disappoints greatly. Vasquez was a major disappointment for the Sox.
You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little messed up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?
Vazquez has pitched better for NL teams.
That’s likely the reason he’s doing better in Atlanta.

I'd have taken McLouth
He is a very solid ball player. I’ll almost always take the proven major leaguer over prospects. This is why the Pirates continue to dwell in the cellar. That Bobby Morris trade really worked out for them.
I dont' agree
The Pirates sold Nate McLouth at the high water mark of his value when you factor in everything. Plus they have the wonderfully gifted Andrew McCutcheon waiting in the wings. While I like McLouth, I guess I also come down on the side of the ledger that says he isn’t as great as his 2008 production would suggest he is. Good ballplayer, no doubt about it. But I really wonder what he will settle in at in terms of yearly production totals. He also has defensive limitations.

That's not a legitimate yardstick for defensive performance
Take a look at the number of gold gloves that Torii Hunter has.

If I recall McLouth ranked something like #54 in terms of outfield defense
You’ll have to ask the resident sabermagicians for more clarification.

I'd rather be the Pirates in this deal than the Braves.

On the bright side
McLouth has proven he can get big his against the Cubs. We play the Pirates a lot. Him going to the East Coast might give us an extra win or 2 down the road.
can their fans buy jerseys
with velcro name plates?
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
Maybe this is why the Braves...
… have jerseys with names on sewn-on patches rather than stitched to the jersey.

thats the thing
it should be a joke only, but seems it might be sensible

We just got two new Cubs fans
I got two Pirates fans in my office in CT.
I’ve officially converted them today. They both said they will never root for the Pirates again (they’ve been fans over 20 years).
I honestly
have started to think that the Pirates are the A’s of the National league. They have no real interest in winning anytime soon… just in growing and trading for prospects and then selling them when they become good players. Perhaps it’s fun for the GMs involved, but must be really frustrating as a fan.
Disagree completely...
They are building up the team for when Alvarez is ready…have you ever seen him hit.
Neal Huntington is a good GM
I think he is smart enough to understand that the Pirates have one shot to build this thing up right. McLouth quite frankly is an “over-achiever” type in the mold of a Ryan Theriot. Fact is while McLouth is a fine ballplayer he isn’t all that he is cracked up to be either. His defensive ranking is below average despite the Gold Glove and I think his batting line so far this year is more reflective of who he really is.
If you’re Pittsburgh you’ve got to get creative and not live in denial on things like Jim Hendry does in Chicago. Fact is Pittsburgh operates with a payroll that is 1/3 what the Cubs have to operate with. If you aren’t objective in your decision-making and making honest assessment of when and how you can win? Then it can get real, real ugly fast. See the Washington Nationals for Exhibit A in this regard.

which is why a salary cap is needed

Well then Jim Hendry should head directly to the unemployment line because I'm absolutely convinced he could never operate under the financial conditions of most ballclubs
