Why do we keep pitching the Sanchez

Ok, I’m going to have to seriously consider following them this year cause the Cubs are making me dizzy and ill.

I agree
I moved to CO about a year ago, and, though it pains me to say this, I’m starting to look forward to their games. They actually provide some relief after this bullshit.

Cubs aren't much better than the Pirates
Someone explain to me how that is a horribly wrong conclusion. Cubs are not a good ballclub in 2009. Simple as that. In fact, the chances are decent that Pittsburgh will finish the season ahead of the Cubs.

Pie has tripled and Ronny Cedeno has homered in the same night
and we have no runs because our 1-2 hitters are GARBAGE. This is on you Lou for batting DOME second. Pretty certain this is the nexus of the universe.

When your
team plays like it did last year, Lou can be evasive about the Soriano in the Leadoff question. But you’re right – this team blows, and it isn’t helping that our leadoff hitter has an OBP below .300. Lou should have to answer for that.
With any other manager, people would question whether he belongs in baseball at all.

Soriano and Fukudome..1,2 in the lineup..wow
I dont care how bad Soriano hits anywhere else in the lineup..he should not be hitting leadoff..put him at 6 and let him cry the rest of the season..it will do good for the team..but Lou cares nothing about that..WOW

The Soriano can only hit leadoff argument was always dumb – but now it has no basis at all.

he’s stuck in a rut with a lineup Hendry built at his demand and there is next to nothing he can do about it. They’re not going to bench Suckiano, no matter what.

Try the Cubs-induced coma
Take 3-4 games off…look at the box in the morning if you must…but don’t watch the games. Then you come back refreshed and normally the win more than lose when you don’t watch.
I’ve tried it many times over the last two seasons.

This team
May force Lou to retire a year early.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
I don't like Lou, but...
…there’s only so much you can blame the manager for. If you want to blame him for not forcing Soriano out of the leadoff spot, that’s fair game. The problem is not Soriano alone. What can he possibly do? Hendry brought in a new hitting coach and that hasn’t solved the problems either. The problem isn’t the management. It’s a problem with the players themselves. They have no one but themselves to blame for being a team that can’t play above .500 consistently. I honestly think the Cubs would be doing even worse if not for Lou Piniella and it takes a lot for me to admit that.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
Lou is a below average in game manager
and his decisions this year have been beyond bad an awful lot.
Who the hell bats a guy who’s been hitting .170 this month at #2?
Why is Mike Fontenot still a starting player?
Why announce that Milton is going to get a few days off, then use him as a pinch hitter?
by WanderingWanderer on Jun 30, 2009 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions
Short bench
People loved him when the team won back to back division titles.
Here goes:
1) Who do you put at #2? Honestly answer that question for me.
2) Aramis Ramirez is on the DL, so the infield has been in shambles. Is it Mike Fontenot’s fault that in his first season as a starter that he has to learn a new position? Granted, he could have done better, but the organization made a judgment call on starting Mike Fontenot.
3) I’d rather not play Milton at all, but they’re paying him too much money to sit.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
I never "loved" Lou
once I actually saw him manage. I liked that for a couple of years his players seemed to play for him (until the playoffs) but I’ve never been impressed with his in game managing.
1) Theriot
2) No, it’s not Fontenot’s fault that he isn’t very good, and Lou and Jim decided to hand him a job he didn’t earn, it was Jim and LOU’S which is the point of this discussion. Lou’s bad decision to keep him in the starting lineup.

And why not bat Theriot leadoff? He’s one of the better hitters on the team and he’s not necessarily an RBI guy. I would not bat Bradley in the heart of the order either. If anything, I’d move Soto down to where you have Bradley.

If I'm going leadoff
I’m going to go with a guy who has proved he can hit major league pitching over a long period. I want a little more experience in the leadoff spot. You can put Fuld second or even Bradley, which is not as odd as it sounds when you consider he seems to prefer taking walks. Fuld isn’t a bad choice, but if you want to move Bradley up, that’s the way to do it.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
What evidence do you have that Fuld is actually better
This isn’t about getting rid of a guy you don’t like and just replacing him with someone else. You have to have some indication that he’d actually do a better job. He was .000/.333/.000 in his 14 MLB at-bats.

Yes, I am an optimist
But I am also a level headed person. I can understand everyone’s frustration who is on said “dark side”. I feel it too. If anyone doubts that I ache and hurt and get pissed off when this team does poorly, then they are sorely mistaken.
I was never as high like most around here last year, and I won’t get low and make unrealistic claims or proclaim the season over when we are not even close to being mathematically eliminated nor are we even 6 games back. Not too mention we have an EASIER schedule the second half of the season.
I agree our team is a mess. I agree we blow hardcore right now. I agree its embarrassing that our $150 million+ payroll ballclub plays like a bunch of unmotivated, lazy superstars.

the cubs are only 4 games behind the brewers
IIRC the 2003 cubs were a lot farther behind before the ASB and the 2006 cardinals werent that good having 2 8 game losing streaks and a 7 game losing streak either but still managed to win the world series
by jesus christos on Jun 30, 2009 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions
Close doesn't mean for sure
If you don’t make it, you can shake things up in the offseason. You’re losing Rich Harden to free agency. The sale should be done by then. You’ll have an easier time making what I’d say would be the great changes. I don’t think a lot of what’s wrong with this team can be fixed by July 31. There’s no reason to go on full fire sale mode because this season is not done yet.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
My point is not to start a fire sale
I dont believe we could trade most of these guys. The point would be to send a message. This performance is unacceptable. Would it work. Maybe not, but it would not necessarily mean a fire sale.
Further, if you coud get out from under some of those contracts, that would be well worth suffering a rough fate this season. Imagine what a new GM could do without Fuku’s 12 million annual or Soriano’s 20 million, or Zambrano’s 15 or Bradleys 10
What could he do?
Zambrano looks to be having more of an off year to me than anything else. I’d say the same with Soriano even though I’m a bit suspicious about decline. I’m sold on Fukudome not being worth his salary, but that contract is too large to deal right now.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
Let me be clear
I dont think anyone wants these guys, thats why Im willing to throw them on waivers. If someone does want them, however, then trading them would be the right thing to do.
My point of using waivers, which is the same as Sullivan;s, is that there is a message there. If someone is so supid as to bite on the deal, then even better.
Imagine what a new GM could do without Fuku’s 12 million annual or Soriano’s 20 million, or Zambrano’s 15 or Bradleys 10.
Well, there would be plenty of GMs available at that point, because any GM that took any of those contracts except Z would quickly be fired.
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
The point of having a job...
…is to try to keep that job. Doing something that you know can get you fired isn’t exactly good for your job security.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
My point was
That no one is going to take those contracts, again with the exception of Z, for good reason
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
believe me, I hope I'm right too
Worst case scenario though, this season, the last as The Trib’s team, will just epitomize what’s is wrong with this organization, and radical changes will be made once the new ownership gets in with a winning attitude.
Hendry has made some great deals in the past, but this year, this team, unless things turn around, is a fireable offense

It almost makes me wish the season
was over so I could hear Garry Meier everyday.
"Any old kind of a run wins it!"--Jack Brickhouse
We now have a new motto for this team - An Embarassment of Riches.
"Hats for bats.....keep bats warm." - Pedro Cerrano
"Hey bartender, Jobu needs a refill !!!!!!!" - Eddie Harris

Optimist - or Pessimist
or “Realist”
We can all agree on one thing:
This team right now is really bad.
I was not expecting to sweep the Pirates. But a shutout??? $140MM payroll vs. $15MM?
It's baseball man
This is not the NFL, things like this happen over the course of a 162 season.
Just sucks that its been happening a bit too often
Albert Pujols for Cubs Starting 1B in 2012
Agreed,
Heine. It is not the NFL. Note the words, “…team RIGHT NOW is really bad…”
The worst in baseball with RISP.
Yes we are horrible right now
But injuries and team-wide slumps know no payroll
Albert Pujols for Cubs Starting 1B in 2012
Pujols hits 29 and 30
unbelievable ball player.
How you gonna pull that off?
Ricketts going to buy the Cards and then nontender him?
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
I've seen how poorly $150 million can be spent
And how teams like the Marlins, Rays, etc. can compete with limited payrolls.
Cubs figure out how to fix one thing and implement the other, getting Pujols is NOT out of the question
Albert Pujols for Cubs Starting 1B in 2012
The Cardinals would have to be insane to give him up
And I mean, literally insane. As in, Tony LaRussa banging his head against the wall, screaming, “ROSEBUD! ROSEBUD!” insane. Ain’t going to happen.
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
I'm glad I set my beer down
That post really made me laugh.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
Never say never
but your’re probably right.

knowing the history of the Cubs
we would finally get Pujols when he’s 45 and cannot hit anymore.
Drive, Monkey Drive!
lol or we do get him and he turns into some .280 15 hr's 75 rbi guy
WTF!
Albert Pujols for Cubs Starting 1B in 2012
We got Hornsby in 1929, who won the MVP that year
Problem is that Hack Wilson couldn’t catch a fly ball in the 1929 World Series.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
You don't know this
LaRussa leaving the Cardinals, and the Cardinals inability to field a competitive team, coupled with poor attendance figures for the next two year because of said poor play, it is definitely a possibility
Albert Pujols for Cubs Starting 1B in 2012
you are right
and I cannot say the man is loyal to the Cardinals. He appears to be. But would want to be the STL GM who lets Pujols go to the Cubs?
Drive, Monkey Drive!
I just don't think the Cardinals will be able to pay him what he deserves even AFTER a hometown discount
and still be able to put the kind of players around him he feels he deserves.
Its like they A. Resign Pujols to his mega-contract and then be the STL Pujols for the next 10 years, or move one and field a competitive team
Albert Pujols for Cubs Starting 1B in 2012
True enough
I still don’t think he’s leaving St. Louis, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he did.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Jun 30, 2009 9:29 PM CDT up reply actions
and if he does
it won’t be for the Cubs
by ElHijoDelRonSanto on Jun 30, 2009 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions
Actually, he could probably get $10 million a year
From ESPN, just for the honor of having him in their presence.
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
hes going to go where
A. He can be competitve and B. Get Paid.
Albert Pujols for Cubs Starting 1B in 2012
The bottom line is
there aren’t going to be any changes to the roster until Ramirez has been back a few weeks. Coincidentally, that’s right about at the trading deadline. Once this team’s had ARam in the lineup again for a while — even if he doesn’t hit .350 — Lou and Hendry can make a call.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Jun 30, 2009 9:00 PM CDT reply actions
Bingo
We’ve essentially been playing without our RBI guy for about two months now. It’s actually amazing that this team hasn’t gone completely in the cellar without him.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
and I well stand by it. You add an RBI guy
Other RBI guys will come out of the woodwork
Albert Pujols for Cubs Starting 1B in 2012
except that no one knows how much of ARAM will come back
dislocated shoulder is something that can linger a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time. Take it from someone who’s athletic career was ended by them.
I was no all -star, but was a college athlete, and had to give it up because my shoulder constantly popped out, after the first time.
by WanderingWanderer on Jun 30, 2009 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions
It will be his presence more than his production that will help this team
he could hit .270 and i still think things will come around. We don’t need bombs and power numbers, we need timely hitting.
We need a reminder that when you have runners on 3rd and 2nd with noone out, the pitcher is the one in trouble, not out offense
Albert Pujols for Cubs Starting 1B in 2012
that makes no sense
if he hits .270 I’ll be relatively happy. But you’re saying his production won’t matter, then saying that the team needs to see that a pitcher is in trouble with him at the plate.
The only way the pitcher is in trouble is if he’s hitting, and hitting well
by WanderingWanderer on Jun 30, 2009 9:17 PM CDT up reply actions
Aramis would have delivered in the 8th inning tonight
regardless of his average when he comes back
Albert Pujols for Cubs Starting 1B in 2012
At this point, he could hit .170 and still be one of the team's best hitters
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
Not there yet.
Being in near the cellar in June isn’t exactly the same as being in the cellar in July or August.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
Remember this
Just having ARam in the lineup will settle down the order. He doesn’t have to hit a ton.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Jun 30, 2009 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions
this coming from the guy who believed that having Dero in the lineup wouldn't have helped at all
your lack of logic knows no bounds
by WanderingWanderer on Jun 30, 2009 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions
If you don't know the difference between ARam and DeRo
Then I can’t help you. Then again, I don’t think anybody can.
But I forgot, DeRo is the reincarnation of Lou Gehrig.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Jun 30, 2009 9:09 PM CDT up reply actions
he was actually someone who was driving in runs
which is presumably what ARAM will do. You just didn’t want him here out of some sort of weird spite towards those who did.
You NEVER from what I saw, gave a reason why Dero wouldn’t have upgraded the offense. It’s simple statistics.
by WanderingWanderer on Jun 30, 2009 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions
and there's that winning strawman/hyperbole argument you love so much
You seriously crack me up. Getting ARAM back will magically make everyone else better. But when someone says getting Derosa might have made the offense better, it’s so ridiculous, that it’s like calling him Lou Gehrig.
Like I said, your lack of logic knows no bounds
by WanderingWanderer on Jun 30, 2009 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions
Not the right comparison
DeRosa: .263/.336/.446
Fontenot: .219/.304/.357
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
it's a fine comparison when the original argument was
that having a competent hitter makes the rest of the offense better
by WanderingWanderer on Jun 30, 2009 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions
There's a difference
between a “competent hitter” and a perennial all-star who is/has been the best hitter on your club, you moron.
The Cubs roster is filled with competent hitters, more competent than your hero, even.
It’s like talking to a brick wall.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Jun 30, 2009 9:16 PM CDT up reply actions
DeRosa
I was skeptical of the trade to the Indians when it happened, it definitely damaged our fielding depth. But unil last year DeRo was a pretty average hitter. And last year was a career year. I feel Hendry rolled the dice, gambing that he would not get comparable numbers this year out of DeRo.
Drive, Monkey Drive!
My hero? speaking of a brick wall.....
“The Cubs roster is filled with competent hitters” is it? Odd, I could have sworn we have one of the worst offenses in the NL, and THE worst with RISP. That doesn’t scream competence to me.
Neither do any of your posts for that matter
by WanderingWanderer on Jun 30, 2009 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Look at their track record
Yes, the roster is filled with competent hitters.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Jun 30, 2009 9:20 PM CDT up reply actions
they aren't competent this year, and Derosa has been
which is the point that keeps flying over your head like an airplane circling a crowded runway
by WanderingWanderer on Jun 30, 2009 9:22 PM CDT up reply actions
Not me
I’d just be the eccentric drunk. Think Kramer with too much to drink.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
Take Pujols off the Cardinals
and St. Louis goes in the tank. Does DeRosa help them then? Heck, they’re on their way to going 0-3 with him AND Pujols.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Jun 30, 2009 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Don't remember thinking we'd go undefeated with Derosa
but I understand things like nuance are hard for you to understand
by WanderingWanderer on Jun 30, 2009 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions
Will he hit leadoff too?
If so, we’ve solved all of our problems ;)
I guess I wouldn't hate that
but it would make me wonder what we’re giving up to get him, and whether those prospects would be better spent on upgrading our offense
by WanderingWanderer on Jun 30, 2009 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions
At this point, having Healh Bell PH might upgrade our offense
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
Why so serious?
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
You can stand on your
head with suppositions, but I can just see what is happening currently.
When (if) the time comes that they can play at a .600 clip for the rest of the season, then I’ll give them credit where it is due.
I feel your pain, E

Oh - I'll be okay
Bruce until we get about 10 games out…
I am gonna write Jim Hendry, anyway!
