Cubs promote Vitters, Carpenter, Cashner
Today the Cubs promoted Josh Vitters, our top prospect, to Daytona according to This press release. Vitters was hitting .316 through 73 games to lead the Peoria Chiefs. He was also leading the team with 15 home runs. This move makes me pretty happy. As long as he can keep up his good hitting I think he is on his way to make it to the big leagues in a few more years.
Chris Carpenter also was promoted to Daytona. He had 4-3 record with a 2.44 ERA for Peoria. On June 15 against Quad Cities,he threw a seven-inning, complete game shutout with just three hits allowed.
To make room for both Andrew Cashner and Nathan Samson are being promoted to Tenesee. A strict pitch count prevented Cashner from factoring in any decisions while in Daytona, but had an ERA at 1.50 after twelve starts. He also had a better than 2:1 strike-out-to-walk ratio. Samson hit .251 in 61 games this season, was second in runs scored and first in walks with 24. He struck out just ten times in 207 at-bats. Samson also committed just ten errors as an everyday 2nd baseman.
This fanpost has more details on Cashner, Vitters, and Carpenter as players
Good to see Vitters and Carpenter to continue to move up through the system. But I personally am more excited to see what Cashner can do as he keeps moving up. I would love to see him getting a start in the big leagues in 2 years.

Only 10?
You make it sound like Samson is a good defender. He was moved off SS in part because he made 26 errors there last year. He’s only played 60 games at 2B. For reference Uggla “only” has 7 errors in 75 games this year andI dobt many people would call him a good defender.
It was a point to a small improvent at a new position.
.967 Fielding percentage through 60 games. Not saying he is a good defender though.

Vitters in AA Some Time in 2010?
I’m glad to see Vitters headed to high-A ball. I’d like to see him get a shot at AA in Tennessee next season, even if he doesn’t start 2010 in AA.

I'd love to see him there
At the end of 2009. It could happen

He would have to be tearing it up
I think he has a great shot of being in Tennessee early on in 2010.

I agree...
I think he spends the rest of this year in A+ ball. Whether or not he starts next season in A+ ball depends on how well he does the rest of this year. But I hope he’s in AA by this time next year, if not sooner.

Would he go from AA to the majors?
Or is a stretch at AAA likely? I read a post here that a lot of teams go from AA to the majors, which the Cubs did with Murton and the guy that got hit in the head.

The Cubs have tended to prefer to send their prospects to AAA first...
Even if only briefly. I’d be surprised if Vitters didn’t go to AAA before coming to the big leagues.
The hope would be to have him in AAA in 2011. He’d only be 21 at that point. That’d mean a promotion to AA sometime next year, and then a promotion to AAA sometime the following year. Then, maybe he’s a September call-up in 2011, and makes the starting lineup for the big team as a 22 year old in 2012.

Lets just hope the ETA is 2012 instead of Vitters being yet another colossal organizational bust
No need to rush Vitters. He’s got lots of growing up to do as a professional baseball player.
$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.
Chris Carpenter
Hard to get geeked up over a 23 year old dominating the low-A ball scene. Vitters and Cashner are exciting. Carpenter not so much.
