Here Comes Samardzija
The Chicago Cubs will announce that right-handed pitcher Jeff Samardzija has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa and will go into the bullpen, replacing right-handed pitcher Jose Ascanio, according to a league source.
Samardzija has been starting at Iowa, and he's done well, adding a more effective slider to his repertoire of a fastball and a split-finger pitch.
The move will be announced before tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Ascanio will be optioned back to Iowa.

Being from the "region"
I support everything Samardzija does, I just hope he is more effective then he was last time around..
I also wish they would leave him be so he could maybe start next year..

This was obviously done out of necessity, which was probably the case last year when he was called up, so one has to wonder if he’ll ever get a shot to start in Chicago

Um...
… was this copied/pasted from another source?
If it was, you need to link it and put the rest in a blockquote. Otherwise it’s a copyright violation.
Since I don’t know where it’s from, the original poster will have to do this. If not, I’m going to have to reluctantly delete this post until I find a link.

Whoops, my fault.
Thanks for fixing it, Al.

Did you delete my fanshot on this Al?
Or did it go away on its own?
I ask because I was having trouble posting it initially…

Yes, I deleted it...
… sorry, I should have emailed you to let you know. Figured it was easier just to combine discussion here.

I found the link on ESPN Chicago.
I’ll fix the post.

Well.. just 17 more games and they can DL him..
Nice little rule 5 loophole. WIth as little use as he’s getting, maybe he can go on the DL for “chronic numb butt”

I've been thinking about that a lot this year.
To prevent the abuse of the Rule 5 draft, the rule also states that the draftee must be active for at least 90 days. This keeps teams from drafting players, then placing them on the disabled list for the majority of the season.
by DisCUBbobulated on Jun 30, 2009 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions
Just realize my mistake.. 90 days not 90 games..
So we’re even closer than that..

Who would you replace him with
I mean I guess Ascanio is better. Patton hasn’t been HORRIFIC. I’d rather have him than Heilman to be honest.

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.
It appears...
… the Cubs have to have a pitcher whose name begins with “H” every year to fill that slot.
Last year: Howry
This year: Heilman

But we've come so far!
We can’t turn back now!
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Two suprising things from Ascanio's player page
Of his 14 apperances, he only has one in which he has not allowed a runner – pretty bad if you ask me
and also
according the ESPN player page his 2009 salary is $0 – still not a good deal…if you ask me

I'm not sure why that's surprising.
He’s a young pitcher who doesn’t have much MLB experience. He definitely got hit a lot – 18 hits surrendered in 15.1 IP (.295 BAA). But he also struck out 18 batters in those innings while walking 9. I still like Ascanio and hope he can build on what he learned in the big leagues this season.

Well several of those appearences were 0.1 IP
I’d expect a guy to retire one batter w/o allowing a baserunner more than once in a while.
but really I was just setting up a jokie about his posted salary

Wow, good catch.
I was about to question this move, not anymore though.
Ascanio is a perfect example of why looking at ERA for a reliever is a bad idea.

Yeah, he's worried about...
…whether he’ll ever get a return on investment in that massive signing bonus he gave Samardzija. Either that or it’s one of the LaRoche brothers later tonight.

Does anyone else think that...
…this move might be to showcase Samardzija for a potential trade?
The unexamined blog is not worth reading.
he has an NTC
of course, it’s possbile he’s been convinced to waive it. It’s not like they could tell us.
I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

nearly enough time on the Shark to trade him just yet.

Probably more to showcase...
…him to see if he can pitch.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
He throws heat, I'll give him that..
He’s walks guys and I hate the homeruns he gives up.. Seems like he needs better offspeed stuff or movement on his pitches to keep the ball in the park. Flyball pitchers and Wrigley Field are not normally a good combination, so I hope he learns how to keep batters off balance more. I think this is a Hendry ego move, but I hope it pans out.

Walks ... walks ... walks
I agree … when I saw this, I thought – great another RP that loads the bases with walks. Don’t we have enough of those? I want Samardzija to work out for this team, especially given all the money we through at him when he was better known as a WR than a pitcher.
Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.
Uggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Not again. Yay! We have him in the rotation in the minors, and call him up for the bullpen in the majors. And it’s not like he was remotely good his first stint up here this year. Why not give Ascanio a little more time if someone who’s already sucked is his replacement

Jeff Stevens...
he’s actually a reliever compared to someone who’s been a starter the last couple months. Plus he has a better ERA and WHIP strikes out around one per inning. Oh, and I’d like to point out Samardzija has given up NINE homers.
Perhaps our answer to the DeRosa trade should be to actually use one of the guys we got back for him.
Shark
has actually been MUCH better the last month or so in AAA. His start was horrific and his numbers are still recovering from that.
"Manny Trillo is coming in to pinch run. You know, for a lot of teams, you would pinch run for Manny Trillo." - Harry Caray
Hendry once again displaying preferential treatment over objective analysis
Samardizija is terribly overrated. If not for the Notre Dame thing and the signing bonus he would be lumped in the same conversation about Kevin Friggin Hart. But alas, Jim Hendry lives in denial and doesn’t allow objective analysis to get in the way of doing things. Probably the same strategy he applies during his daily stop at the donut shop when he picks out his baker’s dozen to mow down before lunch.
Stevens was the name to call up.
$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.
