that’s funny, seeing as he was the national league manager of the year last year.
It's not about money. It's about winning and getting over the hump. We've had the appetizer now, but we left the main course on the table.

We also had 8 all-stars last year.
Which means nothing this year.

With the exception of Wedge...
every person on that list is a “high profile” manager.
I am surprised that Piniella is number one though.

Not surprised
Lou is clearly not a player friendly manager. He does not even remember most of their names. FYI you don’t have to
mellow to be popular. Cox is voted the one they would MOST like to play FOR.

So let's see.
We had the manager EVERYONE supposedly wanted to play for — Baker — and didn’t win.
Now we have the manager NO ONE supposedly wants to play for — and haven’t won a playoff game in two years’ worth of trying.
Someone in the middle, please.

Throw as much cash at Bobby Cox or TLR as they want
I don’t care if the Cubs pay Cox like an all-star first baseman.

That is how we got Lou
I don’t want another old guy with a record of wining a WS anywhere from a few years to a decade or more ago, I want someone younger, hungrier and willing to both kick butt and support players. I don’t mean it has to be some unknown guy in his 30s by not keen on AARP members who have been place for two decades.

What I want...
…is a WS title. I don’t care who it is. Cubs fans would have immortalized Piniella as the greatest manager ever if the team had managed to win a pennant and then the WS last year. Obviously that didn’t happen. Joe Girardi has a team in better shape than we do and he’s supposedly in the hot seat if you believe the rumors. Maybe that guy would have been a better fit here in Chicago. We may never know.

maybe his team
would be the better acquisition…
MANAGERS DONT WIN BASEBALL GAMES, PLAYERS DO
it doesn’t matter what manager we have in here, we’ve failed as an organization because we’ve failed to acquire and develop good players and then the occasional time that we have been fortunate enough to do that…. we trade them away….

bottom line....
manager doesn’t make that much of a difference….
we just like *itch about them

Fascinating!
Only three managers received a significant portion of the vote and only Chicago managers received over 10%. This is, in my mind, a real indictment of Lou.
At a time when a number of people are complaining about the players Jim Hendry couldn’t get, you have to wonder if this played into things at all.

Yes and no
There are players who are going to bite on the money and a chance to play for a contender. I have to think Adam Dunn would have jumped at the chance to play here given how much energy he brought to Team USA in the WBC. There are some that probably didn’t want to come to Chicago for whatever reason and Lou was probably one of those reasons. Lou won’t be skipper of the Cubs much longer. Whether he chooses to retire after this season or waits for the end of his contract, he’s in the twilight of his career as a major league manager.

Really no surprise
As mentioned, he forgets names of players, his on field management with the staff is in question, and whether we like it or not he is older.
I wanted him gone a month a go. However I have a sad feeling he will be here for the remainder of this year.

I'm not sure what to make of this poll.
For starters, I’d like a sabermagician to weigh in on how relevant that sample size (380 players) is. Second, I wonder if this is kind of like surveying a bunch of college students on what professor they’d least like to study under. The toughest profs – who also happen to be among the better ones – may come in at the top because they’re more demanding and less fun to be around.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Yep.
I’d also like to know what the age range of the respondents was. I’d guess younger, more inexperienced players would be more apt to not want to play for tough veterans like Piniella and Torre.

How about that Marquis All-Star stuff in Miles' post?
Where’s all the Jason Marquis love? Where are the people crying for him to replace Rich Harden?

My guess is...
…if starting pitching was more of a problem, you might hear more of an outcry re: Marquis. And even that’s a big maybe – he seems to have been cast in a villian’s role even though he didn’t do all that much wrong with the Cubs besides take too much money and make one ill-advised spring training remark.
It will be high drama if he does get picked for the NL All-Star team considering the game is in St. Louis.

There is some actual newsy DeRosa news in that post.
The loss was compounded by a possible wrist injury to the newly acquired DeRosa, who pulled himself from the game after experiencing pain in his left wrist during a fourth-inning at-bat.
DeRosa’s wrist will be X-rayed today but Tuesday night he found it hard to hide his concern. “There are so many small bones there. It’s not like tweaking a hamstring where you can run slower or your arm bothering you where you can ease up,” said De Rosa, who may have hurt himself during his ninth at-bat since being acquired Saturday from the Cleveland Indians. “The wrist and feet are two spots there isn’t much protection for. Swinging a bat, if it’s going to cause pain, is a problem. That’s why I took myself out.”
So we may not see him next week after all.
