La Russa had little to say about the suit.

"I’m not discussing it except to say that our foundation attorney is taking care of it," the manager told The Associated Press.

Messages left Thursday with La Russa’s attorney and San Francisco-based Twitter were not returned.

The lawsuit claims that someone created a false account under La Russa’s name and posted updates, known as "tweets," that gave the false impression that the comments came from La Russa. The suit said the comments were "derogatory and demeaning" and damaged La Russa’s trademark rights.

The account bearing La Russa’s name is no longer active. The lawsuit includes a screen shot of three tweets. One posted on April 19 said: "Lost 2 out of 3, but we made it out of Chicago without one drunk driving incident or dead pitcher."

LaRussa is an idiot

That profile had 4 followers and nobody knew about it. This lawsuit shows the whole world what otherwise would have been forgotten.

The very first post- about drinking Zima is freakin hilarious.

Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

So if someone...

… took your name, started a Twitter account with it and began to tweet stuff that could make you look bad, you’d be OK with that?

it happens though

Go onto myspace and there is atleast 5 different pages for each celebrity. Most of which i assume are not ran by said celebrity.

It's definitely not right...

…but the question is: Why should Twitter pay for it? Couldn’t LaRussa have simply contacted Twitter, notified them that he wasn’t the owner of the account and asked them to take it down? I’m sure they would have – they’re suspending/deleting spam/porn accounts all the time. He really didn’t need to sue them. And it’s true that sites like MySpace, Facebook, etc. are filled with fake celebrity pages. No one really takes them seriously.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Your point is well taken.

I don't like LaRussa anymoe than any other Cub fan...

I’ve always thought he was a jerk, from his time with the As, to his time with the White Sox, and then the Cards.

However, for someone to be so enthralled with making him out to look worse than he actually is, (“…made it out of Chicago without one drunk driving incident, or dead pitcher”), is lower than low in my book. I applaud TLR for bringing this suit, and I hope whoever created the fake account is found and punished to the fullest extent of the law.

That's ridiculous

You might find the tweet to be in bad taste, and i would completely agree with you on that score, but to resort to litigation is like amputating a leg over a stubbed toe. It’s ridiculously heavy-handed.

If Tony wanted to avoid such future embarrassment and ridicule, perhaps he should have thought twice about passing out at a stoplight at 3am and being too drunk to recite the alphabet.
