Zambrano gone after contract?

MLB.com  is reporting here that Big Z will RETIRE after his contract is up.

"After this contract, I'm done," said Zambrano, who is signed through 2012 with a vesting option for 2013. "I'm serious. I don't want to play. I want to help this team, I want to do everything possible to win with this team, but after five years or four years, or whatever I have left on my contract, I just don't want to play.

"I want to stay home and see my daughters grow up and hang out with my family more," he said. "Do you know how many Mother's Days I spend with my mother? Do you know how many things I've lost in my life?

I don't know how I feel about this. I mean, if he wants to do that I can respect wanting to see your family. I think very few of us actually realize how much baseball players are away from their families both during the season and in the off season.

But this quote sounds like he already has one foot out the door. Maybe he should have thought about this a year ago when he signed this deal. Maybe he should have taken a shorter deal.

I just really hope this doesn't effect his performance. If he is saying these kinds of things right now with 4 years left who is to say that in 2 years he doesn't just completely stop performing to his ability. Not the kind of quote I want to see after his suspension and missing a team charter.

Meh..

He’s still pissy over Lou ripping him for the missed flight.

Oh is this where the Zambrano Bashers Club is meeting now?

That’s not a dig at you, gizmo. I’ve got no problem with this fan post or anything you’ve said. It’s just that I’m 15 hours ahead of Chicago, so I’ve seen the future of this thread… :P

Maybe he’s being pissy because he’s gotten in a bit of trouble lately…

Maybe he just recognizes that living in a foreign country away from most of his family and friends is going to continue to take a toll, so he’s arrived at a rational decision about what will be best for the long-term happiness of himself and his family…

Maybe, maybe, maybe…

But there’s simply not enough information in that article to know one way or another… but let the Zambrano mind-reading begin again…

I just see no point in saying this

Unless he’s hoping for people to say “Please Carlos don’t go” and other kinds of attention he is seeking. I love Z. I didn’t even mind his tantrum or his hustling out the bunt. It just worries me that we are stuck with him for 4 or 5 more years and it seems like (if this quote is really how he feels) that he’s already planning on living it up with all his money and not thinking about a World Series.

by gizmo6d9 on Jun 6, 2009 2:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe he shouldn't have said it

Personally, I know that if I had reporters shouting questions at me every day, including days were I just failed miserably on national television, that I’d probably say some stupid things too. Actually, I’m sure I would.

However I think it’s a big stretch to go from his statement that he wants “to stay home and see my daughters grow up and hang out with my family more” and turn that into your statement that he’s “planning on living it up with all his money”.

Finally, Carlos has always seemed like an intense competitor and I assume he’s as hungry to get to a WS as anyone else on the team…

If he's planning on liviing it up with all his money, why isn't he entitled too?

If this man fulfills the terms of his contract which he intends to do, why isn’t he entitled to spend his money any way he sees fit? It’s interesting that people would begrudge a man who says he would like to see his children grow up. I don’t know if it occurred to you but maybe all the recent criticism he’s been given has made him think that he doesn’t need it once his contract is up. I don’t blame the guy. He gives the game all he has when he’s on the field and he’s still one of the most criticized players in this organization. He’s just put together 100 wins in a Cubs uniform but fans still want to bash the guy.

Just wondering

Where does someone – anyone – say that he shouldn’t watch his children grow up?

Z said part of his reason for walking away would be to spend more time with his daughters.

Above, gizmo completely discounts this and claims that “he’s already planning on living it up.” Where in Z’s statement does one get the impression that he just wants to quit playing and go live the high life? gizmo discounts Z’s personal reasons and I was trying to point out that there’s no reason to believe that he’s not being honest about how he feels right now. I also added that Z is entitled to walk away no matter what his reasons may be. I never put words in anyone’s mouth.

by Acapulco Taco Pie on Jun 6, 2009 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Gizmo also said
I mean, if he wants to do that I can respect wanting to see your family. I think very few of us actually realize how much baseball players are away from their families both during the season and in the off season.

I still don’t see where he – or anyone – said that Zambrano shouldn’t watch his children grow up.

by Shanghai Badger on Jun 6, 2009 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Again, when he says Z is "already planning on living it up," it's implying that he is retiring to live the high life not for the reasons he stated.

You seem to think I’m twisting someone’s remarks and in the process are twisting what I said. When the man says he wants to quit to be more involved with his family and gizmo claims, “he’s already planning on living it up,” I find that to be stating that Z isn’t going to retire for the reasons he claims. I don’t know if Carlos will even feel this way when his contract is up but to imply he wants to blow off his career to live it up seems far-fetched to me. Evidently you agree with gizmo and find some need to defend his remarks, got it.

by Acapulco Taco Pie on Jun 6, 2009 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions

No, I'm not trying to twist your remarks

As I’ve said elsewhere in this thread, I’m just tired of people finding fault with others who dare to criticize any aspect of a Chicago Cub.

And, by your logic, couldn’t you be accused of twisting Gizmo’s words?

I guess we have something in common then cause I'm tired of fans making unfounded remarks in their criticism of players.

Criticize a guy’s play all you would like but when you contend that you know a player’s motivation, well you just don’t know enough to say that. I think the remark I pointed out was mindless speculation and felt compelled to voice my opinion. I’m certainly not a mindless defender of all things Cub. Quite the opposite actually.

I wasn’t accusing you of this behavior, I was referring more-so to what I disagreed with in gizmo’s remarks whom you were defending. I also never claimed that I’m right and someone else is wrong. I don’t agree with gizmo randomly assigning motivations to Zambrano, when there really isn’t enough evidence to make those assumptions. I don’t have a problem with people being critical of players I just get really tired of all the negative b.s. that’s assigned to certain players. The way certain players get attacked around here wouldn’t happen if these people actually had to say it to the player’s face.

I don’t expect that to be popular. I don’t expect that to be agreed with.

But my entire premise is that I think that is what is best for the Cubs.

You’re saying I’m part of a Zambrano cult. Show me a single instance where I’ve demonstrated my worship of the Great and Powerful Carlos.

This is becoming typical behavior around here: Rather than responding to the individual poster and the ideas expressed in the post you’re replying to, just place a derisive label on them and respond to your conception of what that label means. Saves time and thought, right?

And yeah, I used the same kind of label in my original post (i.e., “the Zambrano Bashers Club”) but the difference is that I wasn’t applying that label to any particular person — in fact, I was explicit that I wasn’t applying it to gizmo.

He sounds like he's in crisis..

If so, I know how he feels, especially with family and what not. Let’s forget for a moment that he’s a professional baseball player and imagine him as a man – a dad and a husband. To us, they’re baseball players, but there’s a lot more going on for these guys than baseball (except for maybe Pujols – I don’t even think he’s gotten laid yet). I’ve always thought guys like Bradley and Big Z are only vocalizing what a lot of guys in the same position feel – but we don’t really handle people doing that so much in our culture so they get ridiculed and what not.

Z.. you pitched a hell of a game today, dude. I hope you’ll stay with us a long time.

Your basing this on what?

The media hates Zambrano and loves Pujols.

Yes Pujols is a better player but there is no basis to judge their off the field behavior and say Pujols is 100 times or even 1 time or any better off the field.

And I have a tremendous amount of respect for Pujols as a man and all he’s done for people with Down Syndrome. I happen to be involved with Little City here in Chicago.

But I also know a lot about Z’s endeavors and what he does for charities both here in Chicago and in Venezuela. You could almost have a weekly full page for what he does but he doesn’t publicize it.

One thing I like what Z is doing in his home country is donating money to restore churches and other houses of worship. He started just with catholic churches but expanded it to include churches of all denominations as well as other houses of worship of other faiths.

The media started to lose it when the internet started to really hit big and sports radio really exploded.

The internet and sports radio have done good for sports but also bad.

The media members in this city think they are the story.

I trace it back to the mid to late 90s.

The last responsibly covered story in this city was Sandberg’s retirement.

No, it wasn't

Jordan was protected like no one else since John F. Kennedy while he was in Chicago. It wasn’t until later, much later, when Juanita finally had enough, that most of it came out.

And that was after his playing career.

by puckishcubsfan on Jun 6, 2009 8:45 AM CDT up reply actions

First off...

He is NOT derrek lee or dempster. He is his own person. If something was wrong with his family and he couldn’t deal with being away from it, and had the money to be there full time, that is what he has the right to do. You do not have the right to tell him what he should do outside of baseball.

I think it would be very refreshing to see someone be so stand-up about his personal life, and family. Especially professional atheletes.

Don’t compare him to other players when it comes to personal lives, everyones different. Btw, lee and dempsters’ family live here in the USA don’t they? Does Z’s? Also, while I’m on a role, demp and lee’s under a contract. Z would not be if his contract was to expire. He wouldn’t be obligated anything to the team. Even if I was in favor of comparisons like this, it wouldn’t be fair!

Don’t criticize people if they are doing something like this, your not them!

to do something else. They are human beings that act differently to different situation, just like the rest of us. Ususally, something happens to reinvigorate them and they forget about the retirement talk. It’s silly to complain about a player making an announcement about something 5 years into the future. A myriad of things will happen between now and then. This is a non-story.

Lou Pinella threatened retirement dozens of times

It got to where the New York reporters didn’t even want to write about it. He’d go home to his wife and she’d talk him out of it.

It’s all in the book, “Damned Yankees.”

There is a hilarious story about Pinella insisting at the end of the West Coast road trip that he was done and the reporter, not wanting to miss his plane, refused to write it and Pinella was dumbfounded.

Then he went home and Anita talked him out of it again.

This should not be a contest

pitting Z against nurses or video store employees. The stresses on the family of a baseball player are serious and often devastating. Yes they make a LOT of money and get a nice 3 1/2 month break which includes Christmas but they also spend 8 months or more traveling all over the country and can often be forced to move on short notice. Many like Carlos marry and have children at a fairly young age. All the money in the world is not going to save you from having a hard time dealing with family issues under those circumstances. Players and their wives have to decide if the family will move to the city they play in during the season which is often very difficult with school age children, or have the wife kids stay “home” and visit when they can.
Per above I don’t really take this statement by Carlos too seriously but I also don’t think one should make light of difficulties baseball players face in balancing family and work.

PS As in most things baseball they might look to Maddux ( and his wife Kathy) to see how to do it best , as in wait till you are older and established to start a family, let the kids stay in one place after they hit school age and spend the summer break with you and always know what really matters.

he said what he said in response to the question

“Will you go on to win 300 games?”

“Three hundred? Me?” Zambrano said. “No, I’ll be out of here in five years.”

How does he know?

“After this contract, I’m done,” said Zambrano, who is signed through 2012 with a vesting option for 2013. "I’m serious. I don’t want to play. I want to help this team, I want to do everything possible to win with this team, but after five years or four years, or whatever I have left on my contract, I just don’t want to play.

“I want to stay home and see my daughters grow up and hang out with my family more,” he said. "Do you know how many Mother’s Days I spend with my mother? Do you know how many things I’ve lost in my life?

“It’s good to be here, it’s good to play baseball — don’t get me wrong,” Zambrano said. “But five years, four years, whatever I have left in my contract, I will retire. That’s it.”

Once again, context is important. He’s not asking for sympathy. He’s saying why he’s retiring.

And in the face of Worf’s “everyone will come back for more money,” I would be perfectly happy if Z retired when he says he’s going to.

no. it's not.

When he says “I’m looking for sympathy,” THEN you can say he’s looking for it.

He was giving his reasons for retiring at the end of his contract. He has every right to do so. He owes us nothing. He leaves EVERYTHING on the field, and I find it utterly ridiculous that people seem to think that we have a right to know about, and decide whether we approve of, his personal decisions.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

He said know. I’ll bet you $100 that the followup, or implied followup question was “why?”

And so he tells them, and they print it and here we are — with people questioning his dedication, suggesting that he’s weak, suggesting that he should simply quit now.

It’s amazing.

Drew, why are you trying to pick a fight with me?

Because if you’re not, you sure as hell are acting like it.

Am I one of “you guys” because I don’t agree?

I did not question Zambrano’s dedication. I did not say he should quit now. I did say if he really missed his family, that he was free to do so.

I’ve tried to frame this nicely, but perhaps a bit too subtlely:
There are certainly people that are predisposed to focus on the negative in any situation. However, there are times that you go out of your way to ignore potential issues, too.

I can’t read Zambrano’s mind, but I wasn’t born yesterday, either. His actions come across as someone looking for attention, and his behavior has seemed petulant on more than one occassion.

Frankly, I don’t give a rodent’s posterior if that offends people. I also no longer care if people are going to accuse me of being less of a Cub fan, because anyone that’s actually met me knows how much of a Cub fan that I am. I have biases like anyone else, but I try to be as objective as I can. I think Zambrano could stand to grow up. Anyone that has a problem with that can realize it’s just that — their problem.

As for the part you wrote about “owing us” anything, where the hell did I say anything like that? Where did I ever say he doesn’t leave EVERYTHING on the field? Where did I ever say we need to approve of his “personal decisions”? If you’re going to rant, at least rant about something someone actually wrote.

I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say

the suspension and the missed flight have as much to do with his comment as your contention that he just came to realize that he wants no part of missing his family.

Why do you think he was joking about Soto in Lou’s office thing with him saying that Lou has a bat and there is going to be big news. Maybe he was sore about being chewed out from the missed flight.

And if someone misses their family, why doesn’t he retire now and get to spend all the special time with them. I am not dissing Carlos, I love the guy, I want him to pitch for the Cubs until he is no longer effective(hopefully at age 40). But for you to come down on posters for saying he was pissy, there is as much evidence for their reaction as there is for your reaction that his comment has to be genuine about missing his family.

Again I worry something is happening to trigger this suddenly coming out that may be related to the missed flight.

Folks have to take care of their own.

All I’m saying is that you are reading into his statements same as the other posters are. You just don’t like what they said, there is just as much evidence either way. Is there a coincidence that the suspension and the missed flight just happened within a week?

I think one of the other posters was right. Carlos is just an emotional person and doesn’t give much thought to things coming out of his mouth at the time.(and with reporters always trying to get "the good quote out of you) I’m sure he misses his family, but to say 4 years from now, I will retire is something I don’t think even he knows what he will do.

But at least I will say, I’m speculating because I am not his BF and I don’t know the man.

Suggest it all you want..

… but you don’t KNOW that. Sorry, had to do it.

Much evidence is available to suggest that Scales sacrificed much more than Zambrano to get to the majors. The difference between Scales and Zambrano, and what would go to support your answer, is that Scales,by all accounts, has his head screwed on much better, is humble, and wouldn’t think it proper to mention it. Zambrano, obviously, has no such thought processes.

Living here in Long Beach, CalifornI-yay, I’ve followed Vlad Guererro’s career. He solved any homesick issues by bringing his mother and the rest of his brood to live with him here. His mother is well-known for cooking much food for both the Angels, and whatever road team is in town. No one hears nary a peep from Guerrero about anything. He just plays. AND, he’s been hurt a lot lately too, but he never broods about, at least not to where anyone would ever know. I’d suggest Zambrano could easily afford to bring whoever he misses to wherever he is.

Baseball now is heavily populated with players that share a background just like Zambrano’s. Most are not nearly as talented nor as sucessful. Why does it seem it is only ever Zambrano we read about, with these myriad of issues?

I can't stand these type of comments

Boo frickin hoo that he can’t spend every minute with his kids. My guess is that major league baseball players have the opportunity to spend way more time with their kids than most fathers do. They get at least 3 months off in the winter and they have the financial ability to have their family travel with them on business trips during the summer.

When Buehrle said this crap earlier in the year I thought it was a negotiating tactic so that he could play with the Cardinals. I still think that’s true in his case. As for Zambrano, I think he’s just a prima donna. If his desires are elsewhere then go. Get out now. Get someone in here who is willing to develop his talent and become a great pitcher. Maybe it’s this sentiment that prevents Zambrano from being as good as his talent allows. His real focus is elsewhere.

I will always respect guys like Randy Johnson who will leave everything they have on the field. Sure he’s not the pitcher that he was, but he is still contributing to the Giants winning ballgames. It’s an affront to the game for Zambrano to have this attitude.

If he want to go, go now. I’m serious. Retire now and have the Cubs go with a rotation including Wells and Marshall.

by jerry morales rules on Jun 6, 2009 10:57 AM CDT reply actions

You must be joking.

MLB players have more time with their kids that most fathers do? You do realize that they play a 162 game schedule full of travel? The financial means are there to have their family travel with them, sure, but try to imagine that. Taking kids on arduous road trips? Why don’t you take your kids on your next business trip, and tell me how that turns out…

It’s an affront to the game that Z wants to retire at the end of his contract and be with his family? Please… As far as Z retiring now- yeah let’s have the guy that almost by himself put last night’s game in the W column for us retire now. Whatever. I simply don’t agree.

Do you have 3 1/2 months off every year?

I have a 240 game schedule every year. That’s 48 weeks at 5 days per and I have to travel.

I’m positive – absolutely positive – that MLB players have more time and more resources than I do towards a family. I don’t personally know people in major league baseball, but I do know people in the NFL and NHL and yes they do have more time (and more resources) with their family than “9 to 5”ers.

Zambrano is an incredibly talented player, but what I’m saying is that if he’s this conflicted about playing MLB baseball, then go now. The Cubs could use him, sure, but they can get by without him.

In the late 50's

My parents moved to the US from Poland. So, yes, my family does live many hours away. They came here for the financial and political freedom that the US provided. They worked and provided for their family. One thing they didn’t do is complain about how much they had to sacrifice because they got so much more in return.

Zambrano could move every one of his family members here if he wanted to.

All I’m saying is that if he’s this conflicted, then go. A person has to do what he thinks is right for his family. Maybe this is what’s causing his erratic behavior. If so, expect he erratic behavior to get worse.

Go now. The Cubs can get another pitcher.

by jerry morales rules on Jun 6, 2009 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions

You say Z is conflicted about playing he never said anything to indicate that.

Z said he doesn’t see himself continuing to play after his current contract expires. That’s certainly his right and doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to play now. It’s interesting that people project these things onto the player when he’s simply answering a question posed to him about the future of his career. It’s not like he came out and said he’s been thinking about wanting to quit playing. You are right the Cubs can get another pitcher but I doubt if he’ll win 100 games over the next 7 seasons.

The guy says he wants to go at the end of his contract and gives a couple of reasons why. Because he says he will probably retire at the end of his contract he’s now being accused of not having the passion to play now. It really doesn’t seem to matter what he says or does because certain people are going to bash the guy no matter what. It’s even more remarkable that he’s taking all of this heat after his 100th win in a Cubs uniform. The guy seems to give his all every time he takes the field so I won’t accuse the guy of being conflicted as to whether or not he wants to play baseball.

You can’t just bring family here at the click of a finger. It’s more complicated than that or at least you can’t do it legally.

It's not that hard either

You hire a good Immigration lawyer and he’l;l get it done. t may take a year, but he’ll get it done. Also, I have a good feeling that the Cubs probably know more than a few good lawyers that could help poor old Carlos out.

I'm not trying to be callous

I’m sure that his kids are better off financially and from the perspective of time they get to spend with their parents than most everyone. Most US parents have to work, both the mother and father. It’s not the kids that are suffering here.

What would happen if Zambrano actually had a job like the rest of us have? He’s so money and he doesn’t even know it.

One big difference people miss

One big difference between Carlos and a lot of players is Carlos’ family is living a 16 hour plane ride away in a country that’s likely to blow at any moment (I have a coworker from Venezuela who says things are getting bad there sorry it’s not the utopia the media will lead you to believe. This is not only from her but we’ve become friendly enough I’ve spent time with her friends and other people from that country. I became curious because of Carlos and what she’s told me would really make you be very happy you don’t live there)

I just fear Bad Carlos will take over. For a while, it was four or five gems per incident. Then it kinda became even money.

Right now, we’re in a stretch where there are more incidents than gems. If that continues, we’ve got a major problem.

really?

three incidents? And what are these three incidents?

1) Legging out a bunt single, something we expect of every baseball player.
2) Getting suspended for 6 games for contact that was incited by the umpire
3) Missing a plane for reasons unknown.

And don’t remember, the game he got suspended on was one where he battled back without his best stuff, and didn’t lose it until he felt that he’d gotten a bad call — and even then, he was turning away when the ump bumped him.

I know. You don’t believe any of that. Zambrano’s so SELFISH.

Bottom line, IMO.

Zambrano’s a little bit nuts. I love him and he’s my favorite active Cub, but there’s no denying he’s got one or two screws loose. When he says something like this, I don’t think you can take at face value, just like when Lou says he’s gonna do something like play Soriano at 2nd. Zambrano is not able to predict his own feelings 3-4 years down the line. Maybe he retires, but I doubt it. It’s hard for any competitor to walk away from a game they can still play well. Look at Brett Favre. Look at Tom Glavine’s comeback attempts. If he does retire, oh well, it’s a sad day, but that day’s not coming up for a long while.

I have to admit, i didn't expect this to work, and i generally don't condone ratting somebody out, but i think Woo Woo inspires special circumstances.

He was a few rows above me and a group of maybe a hundred other University of Iowa alumni last night, and started right in with the wooing early and loud. Between innings, he was... how shall i say this... creeping around? We all know his reputation.

Within 10 minutes of making a complaint to the Cubs text line, he was gone. Might be worth trying in future instances.

Sorry for the crappy picture quality... just got a new phone (HTC EVO) and am not sure how to take screen caps yet.

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
