Soriano is...

This is your opportunity to share your opinions of Alfonso Soriano...if you so desire.  I must say I have always maintained a fairly neutral stance on him yet after last nights game, I realized I am sick and tired of his lazy assed ways.  Watching this guy fireld his position is painful.  It isn't just the routes he takes to balls it is his weak excuse of an effort to make plays that in turn, cost this team runs.

Several plays this series already and even in Atlanta, I have watched him lolligag his way around LF and just plain suck as a LF.  Yes he can also be a pain at the plate but this dude seems like he couldn't give 2 ______s about playing quality baseball when on defense.  I know that the guy can hit when he is streaking but balance in a player is key and has this, he does not.  Someone recently asked if he was the leader this team is looking for and to that I say...ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Dude puts in little effort.  I say spend less time hopping around like a fool in LF and start learning to field your position.

Did I hear Brenly correctly last night?

I could have sworn he said that Soriano seems disinterested in the field the last few days.

That alone bothers me…I’m for resting him for a couple days….maybe he can get that spark back.

I know he said he takes horible routes

which is true but when he reaches for a ball, he just does it so half assed it seems like a big FU to anyone who cares whether he actually makes that catch.

I hate lolligaggers.

What Brenly said was he misjudged the play and played it badly. He did not say he was disinterested or lolligagging.

This is an example of typical runaway meatball fan.

Diinterested in the field

and disinterested at the plate. I’ve been pretty neutral towards Soriano in the past and neutral towards him leading off. His outfield play is what it is. It’s never been good, but that’s not why anyone would sign him. It’s for his bat. His bat, however, is atrocious right now. I think it’s probably the main reason why the Cub offense has been soon bad these past few weeks. He hasn’t had 2 hits in a game since may 17. In that time, he’s also only had more than 2 total bases once, and that was the one game he hit a HR in.

Yes, the other guys haven’t been lights out either, but he has to move down the order, or, better yet, take a few days off. Piniella let Soto rest and it looks like that might be having some benefit. Soriano looks injured. I know the knee is bothering him, but he has to move down. he’s a professional and he has to learn how to hit lower in the lineup. This hot and cold can’t continue at the top of the order for the next 5 years.

While the White Sox seem to be sucking again, they won 10 out of 14 games when they moved Podsednick to leadoff. I don’t think he’s a guy who can be effective there for an extended period of time, but the did give the White Sox a nice burst of energy because he played the traditional leadoff spot well. .

The difference is that we are talking about players we will never meet and don’t know anything about.

You’re attacking me (and others), whom are real people, and participate in this board on a regular basis. Your protection and propensity to care more about people you will never meet over those that are real persons and active in the BCB board is quite silly.

Maybe, Maybe Not

At this juncture, I think they’ve got him for a few more years yet, but best case scenario, with a year or two or three to go on his deal, possibly Soriano gets hot near the trading deadline and the Cubs unload him on some contending A.L. team, with the Cubs eating a portion of the contract. Unfortunately, that’s the best plausible thing I could come up with. Money portion aside, most of us were pretty happy when the Cubs signed him. Not so much anymore.

Good luck ever finding a team to take Soriano

Not with THAT contract when you pile on his current age and the fact that he disappears for long-stretches, to include the PLAYOFFS. Nope. Cub are stuck with that contract for 5 1/2 more years. It is an albatross around the neck of Jim Hendry and his successor (who by the way can’t replace Hendry soon enough).

You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little messed up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?

Plus injury prone

He’s been healthy for the most part this year (knee aside). I don’t think anyone will take on a contract that size with the chance he might only play 75% of the season.

Killing the Cubs!

Brenly did say he look disinterested in left field and I agree. He looked terrible on Friday and Saturday. His bat has not looked any better. Too me, if your the manager of the other team and your pitcher throws Fonzie anything but a slider away, they should be fined! Right now – Soriano is awful.

by jselinger24 on Jun 7, 2009 9:40 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I was pretty upset with him in the first inning last night.

The double that Chris Dickerson hit to the wall died on the first couple of bounces, yet Soriano jogged after it slowly as though he had no idea Hairston was burning around the bases like his hair was on fire. His relay throw to Theriot was fine (once he actually got the ball) and Ryan threw a strike to Geo, but it was just a second too late. A little more hustle on that play, just a little more urgency on Soriano’s part, and Hairston is probably out at home. That put me off quite a bit.

I suppose then that I disagree 110%. Yes the guy can hit (at times) and I am fine with him as a leadoff hitter though I am surprised that you completely discount fielding skills as a major factor in what makes “the best LF in the league”.

The guy is plain shite in the field and he is lazy. I have trouble swallowing those characteristics as part of who the best LF in the league is. I would say he is one of the absolute worst LF in the entire game. He is a great offensive ballplayer at times but…

Word has gotten around the league that you dont run on Soriano, so its only natural his assist numbers will drop, much like Deions INTs dropped b/c people knew better than to throw his way.

Sorianos arm makes up for whatever he might like in terms of routes to the ball or any perceived lack of range

don’t lie. Soriano has the best arm in LF. He is moving back on the ball a lot better. He’s made several running and diving catches. There is no way to quantify “lazy”, but I don’t believe that he is.

He’s slumping now. Slumps effect both sides of play. He’ll come back and carry the team.

I'm having a hard time understanding this logic.

Soriano’s defense is better, that’s clear. Both player’s total WAR over the last two full seasons and this one are comparable. Braun does a bit more with everything than Soriano does (proably because of age), and Braun is damn more consistent when he does it. The grass is always greener, but at this point I’d prefer someone who gets hits on a regular basis to someone that goes 2-29 then 14-20. It’s more than frustrating, it seems like a career lack of mental preparation.

It’s hard to take your comment seriously when I can name no less than two other DIVISIONAL left fielders that perhaps are better than Soriano, but you want to claim him as the best out of 29 other LFs.

Boy oh boy, you opened Pandora's box

In my opinion, he can be as good as he is bad. He’s able to carry the team alone for extended periods of time, as well as become a glaring hole, both offensively and defensively.

I’ve seen him dog it for 40 games, then lift the Cubs to first place within 30 games (circa 2007). This year, he hustled before his knee became injured. He’s as maddening as any player in the league, but his our maddening player.

This incarnation of the Cubs has other, bigger problems. I’d much rather focus on those.

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

Soriano is who he is.

A really talented, streak hitting, sometimes lackadaisical fielding player that will be on our team for years to come.

If you like him, yea, you will get more of him. If you don’t, then let me tell you that you’re stuck with him.

But the question should be how do we use him, move him down in the order so when the cold spells happen it doesn’t hurt the team as much. Yesterday has now been the 16th straight game without a multiple hit. That is a long stretch and hurts us on top of our lineup.

He has to move down the order

and he has to learn how to hit there. He’s a professional and he must see how his play is hurting the team. Perhaps he really doesn’t care.

by jerry morales rules on Jun 7, 2009 10:58 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

he wouldn't move down there anyways

but he should stay in the leadoff position because the cubs are at their best when he hits there

by lexmarklover on Jun 7, 2009 11:03 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Cubs are at their best when he hits anywhere in the lineup.

If he goes on a streak batting 3-4-5 then he can carry the team there too.

And he has moved before, just this year in fact. We just need to give it more than 2 games.

And we have to give it more than just 2 games.

That way he will get accustomed to the new position. It will happen eventually, why not do it now when the team is struggling.

I'm sorry, but that's incorrect.

Soriano has hit 1st, 3rd, and 5th for the majority of his career, and he hits significantly worse in any other position than lead-off.

I did a post about this last week

link

He has not been tried any other spot for longer than a couple of games since 2005. If you are saying that the results of 2004 and 2005 are the ones to go by, then the results are mixed between those years. One year he hit better and the other he hit worse.

I’m just saying we haven’t given it a try of say…more than 2 games.

Can we stop it

about Soriano batting leadoff or not?

The evidence shows he bats better at leadoff than anyplace else. Period.

I don’t understand why people keep trying to put a square peg in a round hole. Kind of like Dusty did with LaTroy Hawkins as a closer.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Jun 7, 2009 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, not really.

My position about him moving out of the leadoff spot is for the better of the team. IMHO it would actually help the team in his cold spells and …dare I say…the playoffs.

I made a post about this, but if you’ll want to close your eyes and not listen then that’s your right. But I won’t stop to continue to argue something I think is better for the team overall.

I understand he says he’s comfortable, that is why we have to give it longer than 2 games.

He has over 600 plate attempts at 3rd and 5th in the order. That’s enough to satiate my sample size appetite, yes, if that’s what you’re asking. I’m not gonna screw with a guy that’s a career 115 OPS+ [sheesh, are we really paying a guy $136,000,000 that’s only OPS+ 115? WOW.], and mainly because he’s lead-off when he’s producing those successes.

If you want quantitative data, it’s there; there is factual evidence Soriano performs better in the lead-off spot. If you want qualitative data, ask Lou or ask Soriano—Alfonso prefers to bat lead-off, and Lou prefers to have him there. I don’t see the discussion point.

I'm saying those PAs you're talking about happened 4 years ago.

Hasn’t been tried since then. So someone else tried something 4 years ago with mixed results, so we shouldn’t try it even though it may work for us. I don’t see that logic.

My whole point is when he is cold, that it is a drag on the team as a whole. Last years OPS for wins was 1.031. Last years OPS during losses was .582. This year wins .960 and losses .570. Those losses are like having Aron Miles leading off.

Why would you want to put your most streaky hitter on top of the lineup?

Didn't the Cubs lead off the first

with a Double? Who hit that?

Or do you mean multiple hits in a game?

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. Other than you of course. The dude goes 1 for 4 (or 5) and costs runs in the field. Unless that doube is a HR, he didn’t push. He is just lazy these days and I am sick of watching him play.

True, that

And I’m sick of the “Soriano is overpaid” meme, too.

He probably is overpaid. And a big part of that is because the Cubs had to show their fan base evidence that what happened in 2006 was not going to be repeated, that they were serious about winning. If he makes a few more shekels than he should just to make that point, fine by me.

This site has plenty of meatball fans. But I listened to the postgame show last night on WGN, and even the most meatball poster here looks brilliant compared to even the best phone call. Those people are dumber than a sack of hammers.

And I even went back on my DVR to see the play again before I said anything. I actually keep games for about 24-36 hours in case I want to see something that comes up for discussion.

The fact is that he said he wanted to play 156 games, in public. He’s played in 51 games so far. Since today is 1/3 of the season, he’s on pace to play 153.

It seems like an awful lot of effort for three games…

just because a guy plays in games doesn’t mean he is giving it his all. Why do so many players get benched for not giving 100%? No grand plot here, the guy is simply saying what people want to hear, especially at 136 million dollars. I hope

Cause I rarely see him leave his feet except for that ridiculous hop. It may have been in games I missed, though I do have a nice tv outside my office that helps me see the action during the weekday at times.

I tell you what though, I saw Hoffpauir dive the other day, I see Reed Johnson do it quite a bit. Fukudome many times, and even Bradley dives a ton.

Tell you what…the closest can come to measuring laziness is by measuring number of dives. If we can do this, I am all for it cause I am almost certain he will be dead last out of those I mentioned, minus Hoff cause he is not a regular OF (I hope). I mean Bradley dives all the time. AND Bradley is HURT all the time so…

And again, please don’t say he takes good routes and therefore doesn’t have to dive. Fukudome takes great routes and still leaves his feet at times.

Here is my take for what it’s worth (not much with some)…
Soriano is a player who is way more focused on his offense cause it scored him a humungous contract. Especially with the streaks, he has to put in the time and effort to produce or he will feel like a flop. Just like Manny however, he is valued for that and not the D. people have always overlooked it so they can benefit from the O. He stunk as a 2B too right?

Just sayin man, he is simply not here for D and appears to be putting in less effort these days.

ok.

I’m not sure where this is getting us. We’ve shown proof that he’s a good defender, and you refuse to acknowledge it. I’ve shown that if he keeps up the paces he has, he’s going to perform better numerically behind the plate than last year.

I’m not going to base my evaluation of an outfielder on the number of times he dives.

We’re just going to have to agree to disagree. But I have to say, I find this whole thing vaguely ridiculous. Numbers do not lie, and it’s not like there’s a whole lot of interpretation going on.

Went to the game last night – great game, loved it! But I would hate to be a Cubs player. I was on the third base line and the drunk Cubs fans cussing out Soriano in left field were completely obnoxious…I think I may skip future Reds-Cubs games.

I don’t think kinky is like that. In fact before the last 2 weeks I thought he was an excellent poster and had a lot of good points.

But I get really tired of this mentality that players who are slumping don’t care. That is the very definition of meatball.

Although I think a better one may be

Sox playing the Brewers who do you want to win?

Meatball says Brewers because the Sox are the evil south siders.

Real fan says Sox because it is more important the Brewers lose those games.

Sox losing does nothing for the Cubs while the Brewers losing helps them.

Maybe Danny Mac’s return will rejuvenate things.

I hope things change because Bob Sirrot, Jerry Agar and Garry Meier one more show of either of these 3 and I’m going to shoot myself in the head.

Also I get mad when it’s personal and people use terms like they don’t care because they don’t shoot themselves after every loss.

And there are quite a few people here that think bad play makes a player a bad person.

And I agree we are overpaying Soriano but there’s nothing that can be done about it now.

There’s all these people that want to get rid of him they don’t even care if his replacement is any better but forget that we’d have to eat some of the salary and pay a new left fielder and any player even close to Soriano plus what we eat would add up to much more than what he makes.

Soriano is...

and has been the most valuable player on the Cubs for the last few seasons, this one included. Maybe he’s not THE best LF, but he’s top 4-5 in all of baseball.

People love to hate Soriano when he’s off and then quickly become “neutral” as so many on this thread have said when he’s cranking home runs and carrying the team.

that you did not say a single word about Soriano the first month of the season when he was hot and winning games by himself. But his slump brought the “guess-hitting hack” attacks right back out. Hilarious.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. I wanna let you know...

…I was at the student recreation center yesterday, and about 80 guys walked in. The entire men’s basketball team was hosting a summer camp for teenagers. Self, Manning, and almost the entire team was there practicing/coaching/camping. I quit lifting weights and sat and watched a free practice for about 90 minutes.

And then I saw Self and Manning @ The Sandbar last night. Ridiculous.

One of my roommates...

works the KU basketball camp every summer. He’s an assistant coach here in Emporia, and went down to hang out with Manning last week and get him to sign a few balls for a charity auction. Self takes all the coaches out on the town during the camp and is supposedly a really good guy.

I am not alone either. When I am in the bleachers, all I ever hear is how bad he is. No one feels the need to whip out their stat sheet, it is based on many observations of people who have been watching baseball longer than you. That’s all.

NO. Soriano is a streaky hitter. He’s had slumps before. Slumps he works through by playing. He may get an extra day off here and there, but he won’t be benched.

And, to respond to cubs2kisnxtyear, Lou will not bench whoever he wants to bench. He’s a players manager and he, unlike some people in this thread, realize that the Cubs ONLY chance of succeeding comes with Soriano playing. Simple as that.

Soriano is not and probably will never be

a fundamentally sound player. He will always take bad routes in the outfield, do stupid things like take that hop before catching a ball, and swing at bad pitches. That said, he has more than enough talent to make up for it. His stats (both offensive and defensive) prove he’s been a great player throughout his career. He’s struggled this year, that’s for sure, and if these struggles continue, we have a $100 million dollar problem on our hands, but assuming he snaps out of his slump, he’s as good as it gets.

Many people do thinnk he is lazy.

Which doesn’t make any of them right.

Last year, he was so eager to play that he came back early from his first DL trip — and proceeded to play very poorly. Why would a lazy man insist on coming back and play like that? The year before, he injured his wrists late in the year, and instead of even telling the TRAINERS, he taped the hell out of them so that he could continue to play.

Say he takes poor routes to the ball. Say that he strikes out a lot on the low outside slider. But I just don’t think “lazy” is a term you can throw at him.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

I still think he is lazy..

and I even said he looks worse this year above. So I didn’t make statements like this last year because he WAS throwing guys out at home and coming back early. Sorry, I still think he lolligags. All it is is my opinion.

yeah but

the problem people have with this opinion is that there’s very little to BASE it on. The numbers don’t support it, just like they don’t support having him bat lower in the lineup.

A lot of people will agree that he’s slumping, and not playing well.

Seems like people have the right to say that

as I have the right to say it doesn’t appear he is giving it his all. Why is this so hard for people to swallow? It is a general statement not claiming to be based on anything other than my observation. I am not attacking his character off the field, I am not saying he hates his family, I am not saying he has a conspiracy to mislead Cub fans and really just half ass it all career.

Simply to me, it looks like he is lazily going after balls. If he came out and said his leg is bothering him fine, but he hasn’t so all I can go by is what I see.

No.

I am attackinghis play. I am sure he is a great guy otherwise. Lately he has disappointed me a great deal. I am sure he could care less. Which is why reactions to our statements in a sensitive way (like, “hey they’re people too!”), seems ridiculous.

LAZY IN THE FIELD! Attacking a character is sayinghe is a bad man, he doesn’t care about dying children, he likes to steal things from disadvantaged people and hurts defenseless animals.

All I am saying is that he appears to not put in the effort I feel he should be. Come on man.

I can be accused of that at times and I don’t take it as an attack and guess what, even if i were, why is it yours, Timmy’s, and CTSB100’s job to protect a grown man?

Dude, this is getting annoying. Would it make things easier if I were to just say I think he is a very bad person and I wish he would get permanently injured so I never have to watch his good for nothing ass in Wrigley again?

You're right

In April and I think early May he had some clutch hits including late inning HR’s that won the games. I haven’t been happy with his fielding lately or many of his at-bats but he does help the team more than he hurts it in the long-run.

That being said, he needs to bring up that batting average.

“Soriano is…Kinky Reggae”.

"The riches of the game are in the thrills, not the money." --Ernie Banks

by dtpollitt on Jun 7, 2009 9:41 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Soriano is
  • 1/3 of the way through the season, but has hit nearly 50% of the home runs he hit last year (14 so far this year, 29 last year), and is on pace to hit 42 Hrs this year.
  • on track to equal his SB total for last year and the year before
  • on track to have about the same number of Ks as he did last year.
  • on track to play 44 games more than last year (109 last year, on track for 153 this year
  • On track to have 717 PAs, his fourth most ever, and the most since 2006
  • on track to walk 54 times, the second most of his career
  • on track to get 160 hits, 30 more than last year
  • on track for three GIDP

So he’s playing in more games, batting more, striking out less, walking more, hitting more…

and all with this terrible slump for the last 20 or so at bats.

Something to think about.

I sure hope all you "on track for"s

pan out Drew. Seems like a lot to bet on. Hopefully I see changes in what I think is lack of effort. I was happy to see him hit the HR yesterday, or hear it at keast, and expected some to say…“see, he isn’t lazy!”

That proves nothing to me as I merely made statements about his play in the field. Should he all of a sudden choose to leave his feet to catch a ball, which I believe I have seen maybe once since coming here…I will concede.

Speaking of…Reed Johnson..THAT is “not lazy”. Reed Johnson he will never be. Soriano is too busy hopping to catch balls (even after he injured himself doing so) to consider diving for a ball. All I am sayin…also something to think about.

PS, and please don’t say he never has to dive because he takes such great routes to flyballs. :)

I mentioned that I have seen him once that I can remember and it looked more like a fall to me but again, just my opinion. Drew, let’s face it, you and I are just completely on two different ends of the spectrum as to what type of player he is. that’s cool I can respect that.

As noted in another thread...

he’s actually been LESS productive across the board. The only thing he’s doing better this year than last year is staying healthy.

He’s been a league average hitter to this point this season. That’s likely to get better as he’ll go on a hot streak at some point. But your facts, as presented, are very misleading. And in fact, in some cases (such as striking out less) you’ve even presented the wrong conclusion based even on the facts you’ve presented.

by SouthernCub on Jun 8, 2009 9:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think they are.

if he keeps up these paces, then those are the numbers he will produce. All I did was take them and multiply by three. How is that wrong? What did I get wrong about him striking out less? If he’s having more at bats, and he’s getting the same number of strikeouts as last year, then on average, he’s striking out less, proportionally.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

by drewishdrewid on Jun 8, 2009 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's not striking out less...

he’s striking out more. He has 60 Ks in 246 AB (1 per 4 AB). Last year, he had 103 Ks in 506 AB (1 per 5 AB). That’s substantially worse. He’s on pace to strike out 180 times – by far a career high.

And what is misleading about your presentation is that you are presenting his COUNT stats in a manner as to suggest he’s playing better. That is not the case. He’s playing worse, but more often. That means that his count stats are bound to be on a better pace.

His hit rate is down, his walk rate is down, his HR rate is slightly down, his K rate is up. He’s just going to play more games. He’s been a league average hitter this season (100 OPS+). Last season, he had a 121 OPS+.

don’t have the time to track all this down and put it together but I am glad you do! I just thought he was being lazy.

For the record, I don't agree that he's lazy...

I think he tries hard. He’s just limited defensively and overaggressive offensively.

My beef with Drew’s post was just that I think it’s misleading to compare a (projected) season’s worth of stats to 2/3 of a season’s worth of stats and imply that he’s doing better based on that. The facts simply don’t agree – Soriano is playing worse at the moment across the board.

I do, however, expect Soriano to play better offensively moving forward, as he’s a streaky player who has just had a cold stretch. I expect the season numbers to turn out somewhwere close to his career averages. Maybe a little lower in average, but higher in OBP.

by SouthernCub on Jun 8, 2009 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I also expect that...

I have not attacked his offense at all, despite his slump. I do however think he is a lazy OF..at least as of late. Perhaps I am misreading lack of skill with laziness but either way, I have been attacked here for saying both…I said he is bad and he appears to be lazy lately. “Limited defensively” would actually be in agreement with my original statement that Drew so vehemently defended his honor on…based on his numbers.

I think it's lack of confidene defensively, not laziness...

I really believe that what you’re perceiving as laziness/indifference is actually tentativeness and lack of confidence, due to a lack of comfort/ability.

The guy is a pretty prideful guy. I really don’t think he’s lazy. It’s just that tentativeness can often look like laziness to a third-party.

I could be wrong, but that’s how I see it.

by SouthernCub on Jun 8, 2009 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

all I know is

that if he keeps on playing the way he is, he will play in more games, get more hits, drive in more runs, get more HRs, get more walks. I don’t see how you can point to that and say that it’s worse.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. by drewishdrewid on Jun 8, 2009 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can do that because you're comparing apples to oranges...

You’re comparing what would be a full season’s worth of performance to 2/3 of a season’s worth of performance and saying he’s playing better. That’s not a logically valid argument. Honestly, this shouldn’t be that difficult to understand.

Last season, he had an OPS+ of 121. This season, he has an OPS+ of 100. Last season, he had a higher hit rate than he does this season. Last season, he had a (slightly) higher HR rate than he does this season. Last season, he had a higher walk rate than he does this season. Last season, he had a lower strikeout rate than he does this season. All of those things point to Soriano playing better last year than this year.

The ONLY reason that he is on pace to do better in HR, BB, and H (not to mention having almost twice as many Ks – I’m still not sure where you came up with the idea that he’d have about the same amount of Ks as last year) is because he’s on pace to play in about 40 more games.

He could have an OPS+ of around 85 and still be on pace to put up more HR, H, and BB than last year. I wouldn’t call that improvement, would you? Last year, when healthy, he was a top-notch offensive player. This year, he’s been exactly league average.
