More great news on Harden
Not the best newsline to read on the commercial break from today's game...
According to Mr. Sullivan of the Tribune, "Rich Harden was scratched from his rehab start at Triple-A Iowa for undisclosed reasons.
Harden, who was scheduled to pitch on Sunday, was supposed to pitch on Friday against Minnesota at Wrigley Field, but that start will be pushed back. "
While I think the rotation has done a very solid job lately, does anyone else fear that Harden won't be back until ASB? Whatya think?

rumor has it
that they pushed him back because it’s wet there today, and they don’t want to risk another injury.
I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. He’s a hack. Harden was scratched today due to a non-injury illness and should be starting tomorrow.

Why I like Twitter:
cst_cubsHarden has stomach bug. Rehab start moved to Monday, return to rotation now expected to come Saturday.
cst_cubs = Gordon Wittenmyer
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Since when is it a good idea
to defend whitless hacks like Sullivan. The same Paul Sullivan that Vilifies everything Milton Bradley does while saying nothing about equivalent action by other players. Paul Sullivan who constantly trashes Big Z.
He doesn’t deserve my respect and I will attack him as I see fit.

I am basically president of the Bruce Miles fan club. It’s my other hobby besides being President of the Soriano should stay leadoff club.
I will defend to the death a good writer or reporter in this city. Okay to the death is an exaggeration but I will defend a writer.
If Bruce Miles had printed this it would have been different. It would have been a one time thing.
I’m sure in fact Bruce got this same info at the same time but he made calls and got the whole story.

We need to be able to rely on the media to give us accurate information about our favorite baseball team.
They are how we get information. So often we only get half truths at best.
We should not be able to tell who a reporter does and doesn’t like. They can dislike all they want. I don’t care if they have voodoo dolls of the guys they don’t like and stick pins in them.
But when it affects the way they report it’s another. Especially beat writers.

Al, I understand you not wanting posters to attack each other
but media members aren’t fair game? I know you work in the media, but so do I. I think reporters have a thick-enough professional skin to take it.

OK... the "no attacks" is a little too broad.
Media criticism is welcome here. I’d appreciate it if people who did it had some basis for it, would back up their criticism with facts, and not resort to namecalling.

Too bad Sullivan himself has admitted he's not an unbiased journalist.
Sullivan was live with Len and Bob during spring training and said the following about covering Milton Bradley:
“That’s the whole thing of our jobs. We’re human and people that treat us nicer probably get better coverage. The people, you know, that are rude to us… I don’t want to say Milton was rude but he certainly wasn’t very nice to me. You know they’re not always going to get the best coverage. So… You try and be an objective person but uh, you know, we are human, ..so.”
So, Paul Sullivan has admitted he can’t give unbiased coverage of players he doesn’t like. It’s understandable why people would call him an idiot when he admits he isn’t capable of doing his job right.

Al, there is no defense....
Resources are what is supposed to make news outlets different than self-publishers like you and I. If neither Sullivan or the desk editor chose to have a checker make a quick phone call to either the Cubs or the Iowa office to verify the details, then yeah man, they deserve to be ridiculed.

This is typical of Sullivan that’s my point.
Bruce Miles is a great writer. If he did something like this it would be a rarity. But this is just like Sullivan.
A simple call to Iowa “What’s going on?” a simple answer.
But it’s sensationalism to make it appear he’s hurt.
What’s sad about Sullivan is he used to be great. But unfortunately he has become more Mariotti like and he’s a beat writer.
A lot of our writers here have been around a long time. That’s what makes me so angry at them. They used to be so much better but now are terrible. I think it’s the “get it first not get it right” mentality.

I agree completely with everything you said. Paul Sullivan’s job is to present an unbiased point of view on the team, do his research, give fans access to the team that they otherwise would not have, and ask the team well thought-out questions. I love Bruce Miles’ work exactly for those reasons. He does his homework and he’s not afraid to call out Piniella, Hendry, and the team for any legitimate problems they have.
On the other hand, with Sullivan, I simply have not seen him do all of those things over these past years. With the Harden situation, the fact that the freaking Des Moines Register printed a more accurate, better researched, and decidedly less sensationalist blurb about Harden than Sullivan did is just a shame. All he needed to do was make a few phone calls. Instead, he simply goes with something like this, citing “undisclosed reasons” for why an oft-injured pitcher wasn’t going tonight and not mentioning when Harden would make his next start. It could be sloppiness. It could be an attempt to rile up Cubs fans. It could be both.
However, it shouldn’t be any of those things. I expect better out of a beat writer whose employer still owns the team. This is just one more example in the litany of reasons for why I have a very, very negative opinion of Paul Sullivan.
by Outshined_One on Jun 8, 2009 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not sure how "undisclosed reasons" strikes you as "sensationalist".
It was a blog post. Maybe he didn’t know at the time, didn’t have time to find out, and wanted to post information.
Sloppy? Maybe. But to ascribe other motives to such a post is an accusation that you simply don’t have the information yourself to make.

If “undisclosed reasons” for Harden missing a start immediately makes you think, “GAH! Harden’s hurt again!” then that’s more a Harden problem than a Sullivan problem.

This fails to take into account
that the phrase “undisclosed reasons” sounds almost purposely vague, as if to suggest conspiracy to cover up something. Words mean things. Sullivan should, and likely does, know this.

I think the general consensus among the media in Chicago is that the
Cubs organization is not always forthcoming in regards to player injuries. The dramatic situations of Kerry Wood and Mark Prior have made most of the media skeptical of the Cubs information released on player injuries. It seems that when these types of situations arise, the reporters roll their eyes and look as if they are receiving a press release from the Chinese government. I think the nature of the injuries and the need to see players return to the lineup as soon as possible has cause the Cubs to give optimistic reports to the media. Consequently, reporting on player injuries is usually accompanied by some editorial comment about past information releases and how the Cubs do a poor job in releasing this type of information.

Good point on the difference between a blog and a screaming headline.
Maybe he didn’t do it to create controversey. He just was sloppy.
My whole point is this is an example of the get it first not get it right mentality.
The other thing is I wonder if the Cubs released “Harden to be held back a day due to illness” and he only reported he is going to be held back. Not even I would think he would stoop that low.

It's because of the weather
Nevertheless, Harden has not been ok since going to the disabled list late last year. At that time Hendry wanted people to think that it was some sort of scheduled rest and it was Piniella who revealed that he was hurt (he said something along the lines of “if he was healthy he would be in there”). Harden has an injury which they decided not to have surgery for and he has not be dominant this year. All in all, he seems to be a ticking timebomb.
I don’t blame Hendry on this one. We got him for the playoffs and a team that was having a very special season. He was insanely dominant (although even then he couldn’t go deep into games) in the regular season and had an OK (not good) start in the playoffs while being hurt. It’s clear, however, that you can’t sign this guy after this season.
by Luis on Jun 7, 2009 3:13 PM CDT reply actions 1 recs
Despite the fact that it was bc of the weather
Can we please make this the last season of Rich Harden on the Cubs. He served his purpose last season, and his option was an easy pick up this year, but lets leave the long-term contract to another team.
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

I think that's going to be a given...
With Marshall and Wells (at least so far) looking like viable starters and Samardzija waiting in the wings (though he’s struggled so far) and Dempster, Zambrano, and Lilly under contract, it’s hard to see the team paying for more of the injury problems associated with Harden.

Harden tonight
the weather is ver cool in Des Moines today (upper 60’s) but after early morning rain it looks dry the rest of today. Wind will be blowing in tonight.
If you read the Des Moines Register link above from Outshined, there is an interesting note on how the I-Cubs do not promote MLB talent coming through Des Moines as things change like yesterday. There were over 9,000 in attendance to see Harden yesterday, that’s probably a little above usual on a not so nice weather day here. I bet there will be a pretty good crowd tonight to see Harden finally pitch.
This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

A little more where I'm coming from
I happen to help with a website that covers television.
I got some very reliable info that the lead actress was expecting on the show I cover.
I could have run with the story but I double checked before I posted.
I found out my info wasn’t exactly wrong. She had been but lost the baby.
If I had run with the story and it had gotten out it would have caused her a lot of pain. Because her pregnancy was kept out of the papers they don’t have to deal with losing the baby publicly.
