More Out of Control Umpires
I know there was a post/article/fanshot on this a few days ago, but I can't find it. In any case, follow the link for the latest from Mike Winters, the umpire who spurred Bradley's meltdown a couple years ago in San Diego. I guess its not all that shocking an ump would ever use foul language if appropriately provoked. But this seems to be his immediate reaction to Kemp's protest. These guys are out of control, someone on the umpire side needs to get suspended as a message. Winters seems to be an obvious first choice.

Should add if you find foul language offensive, even when in print, you may prefer not to follow the link and just take my word for it…

Like I said before...
… someone has to take charge and get the umpires under control. It’d never have gotten this far if Bud Selig were still alive.

I am wondering if you are trying to be funny by implying that Bud is dead when it comes to decision making...
Or if you are lamenting the untimely death of Giamatti.

I think I just had an epiphany regarding GRod's next career move.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Crikey
You know who consistently complains about umpires, referees, etc.? Losers, that’s who. Suck it up. You don’t see Lou Piniella whining about the umpiring, do you?
You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little messed up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?

Not in public, no
And who in this post is saying the umpires cost the Cubs anything?
I think the argument is valid – umpires are out of control.

out of control?
If the argument is valid there has to be more to the argument than they used an F bomb (like has happened forever) or that they don’t retreat in the face of however you want to describe an amped up Milton Bradley. Oh yeah, and there is the Drew version of reality where the umpire charged poor Carlos who was retreating till he was antagonized.

I've never said that
and you know it. The fact is that the umpire bumped Zambrano. It’s really too bad that a moderator on this site is so unable to set aside his personal team affiliation to be able to see things in an unbiased fashion.
I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

Out of control in the sense that
Far too many of them feel the need to follow players who are walking away.
Too many, when behind the plate, rip their masks off and yell at players who are subtlely expressing their disagreement, rather than showing the umpires up.
Yeah, I think they are out of control. I happen to agree with you that part of their function is to keep order & control, but it isn’t to be the main event, and there are a handful who think that it is.
BTW, serious question — how long should Cameron be suspended for his argument over the weekend?

you know Pete will either play dumb or not reply once you give him any proof. Just like he continues to do with me
and for the record before Ol Pete tries to run circles around it, here is the exact post he stopped replying to, where I point out his rubbish here
you have commented here on two of the three
MB and the Ump
Z and the Ump
Maggs and the Ump
(as of 6/9 you can include Dye now)
You are so full of it, saying
I’m not sure what the 3 situations are you’re referring to.seeing as I start me comment with
Ol Pete Please tell me, do you truly feel that the Ump in this incident (as well as the one with MB and Maggs) that the Umps involved followed the followingOf course there was rules and regulations that were in the thread that the Umps DID NOT follow, and I was asking Ol Pete about them.
yes Pete, calling you out again, wondering when you will actually answer this. You last said
I have no idea what you’re getting at there but your dramatic condemnation of the umpires with posts of long segments of regulations never provided substance to your claim that umpires were supposed to retreat in the face of aggressive players.
when the details I posted did explain that the ump is basically to control, not add to the fire. if you (Pete) can show me where it states that the Ump CAN and SHOULD get in the face of a player and hold a heated exchange, then I will admit you are right. Seeing as I know for a fact you cannot and never will, I am offering a $100 bet with the loser paying to the charity of the winners choice. You can either prove me wrong, or pay up since you are so sure of yourself.

He still owes me an answer as to if the Marlins
should ask MLB to look into Parra throwing one at the head of Hanley Ramirez, then plunking him with the next pitch. He’s yet to answer if he think the Marlins have a serious gripe.

he only answers until
he is called out, and provided with facts. I wish he would stop coming around since he never adds anything decent it seems.

Pete go away please.
you still have yet to answer what i have asked you more than once regarding your stance on the Umps, and you still come back to stir crap (and nothing else) with others.
It is sad too, since I have no hatred for the Brewers over all, but you quickly are becoming a PITA.

seriously
the only times I care about the Brewers is when they’re in the way of the Cubs taking the division. Preferably FROM the Brewers, in Milwaukee.

Lou?
After a call in a game against the Giants, he ranted, he raved, he kicked dirt. Behavior common among unhappy baseball managers. Piniella said then, and he repeated it later to the press, that Darling has a “bias” against his team, that “All year, we haven’t gotten a call from him and I don’t think we’ll get a call from him the rest of the year,” and that “When it comes to the Cincinnati Reds, he doesn’t call a game the way it’s supposed to be called.”

First of all I don’t see a link to anything but, doesn’t really matter.
I also agree that the umpires need to be reeled in. I know things always seem better in years gone by but, I remember watching games when I was a kid when many umpires would listen to agruments for a while then simply turn and walk away….or not listen at all by turning and walking away immediately. How simply would that be…then when a player or manager follows him, continues to agrue how simple would it be for MLB to justify suspensions/fines by pointing out how the the player or manager was the agrressor and needs punishment?
I mostly watch Cub games so my complaints cover umps in Cubs games and I acknowledge that most calls rarely cost teams games but, can think of 2 situations where umpires escalated situations. One being Zambrano’s…the ump instigated the contact. Another was in a game Dempster was pitching. Dempster didn’t get a call on a pitch (and as I remember it was a game he was struggling with his control which is why he probably didn’t get the call) and he obviously said something (since the audio from the field isn’t available on TV, probably a good thing) it would be unknown if his comments were directed towards the umpire, himself (ala Maddux) or just in general….the umpire comes out from behind Soto, rips his mask off and yells out at Dempster. I think it was Brenley who pointed out that while everyone saw Dempster was upset it was the umpire who made sure it was a bigger deal than it needed to be. Last, I do not remember if it was a Cub game or not but it was a game where balls/strikes were a bone of contention (not uncommon with the floating strike zones umpire to umpire) and after the inning the home plate umpire positioned himself in the baseline so that the pitcher would have to walk right by him. If that’s not asking for the situation to get out of control I would like to know what it was. Is it required that umps stand in the baseline between the mound and dugout?
The same rules should apply to umpires as players and managers…..if they instigate contact, prolong and agrument (which they do by standing there and agruing back) and/or if foul language ever comes into play with this incidents then suspensions should apply to them as well as players and managers.
