Gross
I wish teams would boycott Boras altogether.
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

Well then Nats get two first round choices next year as well.

Hmmm... Demand $50 million
Team offering $10.5 million.
This will get settled for $25 million and Boras still gets to have the largest signing bonus ever.
He is smarter than you. Never forget that.

When I imagine Boras...
…coming into a room to negotiate, I picture the scene from the beginning of Return of the Jedi. The one were the Emperor slowly walks down from his shuttle and meets Vader who is waiting for him. I wonder if GMs think that too. Maybe they hear the Empire theme?

would it be a mistake to pass on him
This article suggests that they could just not pick him and not have to deal with Boras but i think this would be a huge mistake. Does anyone agree?

Nats fans would no doubt be pissed...
…that is, if there are any left. Lerner is a billionaire, he got a shiny new ballpark from the taxpayers, he can afford to go big.

The Nats apparently have a good relationship with Boras.
Strasburg will be signed.

That's the problem
after the Crow mess last year where he didn’t sign, the Nationals can’t have a second year in a row without signing. They also can’t afford to not take Strasburg and be viewed as cheap.
Either scenario would help drive a stake through the franchise.

Question?
What if Strasburg gets drafted but doesnt sign where does he go?
by Aramis Ramirez on Jun 8, 2009 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
See Aaron Crow and Tanner Scheppers
from last season’s draft. They didn’t sign and played semi-pro this past year. They will be drafted again today. Crow will likely be a top 5 pick.

Strasberg has limited leverage
Because if he re-enters the draft next year, guess who will have the #1 pick? Yup, the Nationals.

Leverage
I believe that a team has to request permission to draft a player two years in a row. I read that the Nationals did request that of Aaron Crow if he was available with their 10th pick (not likely). If the Nats don’t sign Strasberg and wind up with the top 2 picks next year, Strasberg could simply wait to be the 3rd pick and demand $50M again.
I do think the Nats will sign him, although they will likely shatter the record $10.5M gaurantee given to Prior.

The Nats didn't sign their top pick last year
They have a recent history of this. If they don’t sign him I don’t guarantee they draft him again next year. Boras would signal intent to not sign and Starsburg would slide down. It isn’t inevitable that Stasburg signs with the Nationals.

they are cheap enough
that they probably prefer not having signed their top pick.

Actually, Boras is demanding 50 mil
after inflating Stratsburg ego to the point where he actually thinks he’s worth that much in todays market.
I can’t wait to see how this plays out.

50 million dollars for...
being a great college pitcher. Absolutely f*ing ridiculous.
by kanderber on Jun 8, 2009 3:14 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
as opposed to
60 million for being a great college quarterback?
If Vince Young, Joey Harrington, Alex Smith, David Carr, Jamarcus Russell, and now Matthew Stafford, can all get these kind of dough for doing nothing, then why not an elite pitcher?

They're similar, but . . .
Generally speaking, though, a great quarterback is more critical to the success of their team than an ace pitcher. Look at Cliff Lee, for an example.
For the record, I think its pretty ridiculous for any college athlete to get a contract that large before proving anything in profressional sports. The NBA took a step back from drafting high school players because they felt it was adversely affecting their league. Maybe the NFL and MLB will come up with something to limit how much money (risk) teams can put into a newly drafted player.

Boras has the Nationals over a barrel
Strasburg appears to be amazing enough that he could be an ace caliber major league pitcher by 2010. The Nationals are suffering from a severely bad credibility problem that is getting worse by the week. They HAVE to do something, and Boras of couse knows this. I bet Strasburg gets every penny he is asking for.

You think he'll pitch in Washington next year?

He might be..
pitching in Washington by the end of this year!!
I sit at home after the Cubs lose and wanna pound sand but I know I live in a state without that kinda land. I know in my heart Sori isn't a guess hitting hack and that Dero will never be back. Pitching is King, some do say and hopefully Aaron Miles doesn't play in a Cub uniform another day. By October this I know, to the playoffs we are for sure to go. Go Cubbies!!

Yep
Strasburg is supposedly THAT good. And about as close to being major league ready as a major pitching prospect has been in a long time.

Pitching’s Bright Stars Sometimes Flame Out
There was a good article in the NY Times this past weekend about previous prospects that have gone bust (i.e. Prior, McDonald, Taylor).
Here is the link if you are interested…

Pitches like Mark Prior
The baseball "Guru"s on MLB network compared Strasburg to Mark Prior. I groaned. IF he gets the deal done, Boras will look like a genius. The guy has a funny delivery though. Kind of herky-jerky at the end when he releases the ball. His follow through needs some fine-tuning. The guy just tossed a no-hitter too.
