Tempchad....

I’m ignoring the back and forth that going on above, mostly bc I don’t care. But I was actually curious on your logic about not bunting earlier in the game, but bunting later.

I agree with you that sacrifice bunting there was stupid and did cost us a run. But that’s because I think that statisticas illustrate that sacrifice bunting always reduces your percentage chance of scoring.

I’m curious why you think that bunting later in the game is ok, but bunting early is not? Seems like statistically, it doesnt make a difference what point of the game it is…??

Anyway, just curious what your thought process on that was.

and that's where

generalizations fail to apply to specific situations.

1) Two runs in an inning IS a big inning for us
2) We just failed to score a runner on third. How big is that bunt now? Huge.
3) There was NO WAY to know that Lee was going to HR. You cannot depend on the HR. You play small ball and manufacture runs.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. Given the Cubs efforts to date this season

how likely are they to get a big inning any time in the game?

At what point does a trend become a big enough sample size that you would be willing to change your thinking and play for one run early in the game?

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."

by ballhawk on Jul 1, 2009 7:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is what I was asking about.

to my mind, you play for a maximum numbers of runs in all innings.

You may not need more than one run late in a game. But you still play for them to maximize your % chance of scoring.

Anyway, it doesn’t much matter. I was just wondering if you had a basis for thinking that.

Thanks.

by CubsWin!Oregon on Jul 1, 2009 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

ah, but if you had bunted the runner over and scored in the first,

then you wouldn’t be down 1 in the 9th. You’d be tied.

Any one care to guess where’d you be if you bunted the runner over and scored in the second?

I guess I was talking about...

% chance of scoring. Statistically, you are better served by not sacrificing an out in order to score a run. That isn’t impacted by the score of the game or the inning, as far as I know.

That’s why I’m against sacrifice bunts, whether in the 1st or in the 9th.

(I mentioned it below, but see here for an example: http://www.tangotiger.net/RE9902.html)

by tempchad on Jul 1, 2009 6:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's true.

But to me, we’re just lowering our odds of scoring even more by bunting.

But obviously I get that sacrifice bunting is an institution in modern baseball, so it’s not going to stop happening.

(That’s why I’m not trying to really argue the point, other than explaining my viewpoint. I know most people aren’t gonna see it my way.)

:)

by CubsWin!Oregon on Jul 1, 2009 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

no one says you can't express your opinion.

but you also cannot expect to be asked to defend it, especially when it’s as… mud-stirring as that one.

Here’s a hint — there is no “universally recognized” rule that you don’t bunt in the first inning. In fact, many people have complained that Lou isn’t doing enough to create runs. Bunting Fuld, a speedy guy, over to third makes getting that run in much more likely. There’s no way to predict Lee’s HR. But even a long grounder to short would score Fuld from third.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

by drewishdrewid on Jul 1, 2009 6:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Technically...

sacrificing that out to get a guy over to 3rd actually lowers your % chance of getting that run in….

See here, for example. http://www.tangotiger.net/RE9902.html

by tempchad on Jul 1, 2009 6:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

except

that if Lou expects the Cubs hitters to choke, having Fuld at third with one out is better than having him at second with one out. We’ve had our share of infield outs.

This is where the numbers don’t always match up with reality.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. by drewishdrewid on Jul 1, 2009 6:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think those numbers...

Take into account the entire universe of hitters (including those that suck ala the Cubs).

It simply means that in the grand scheme of things, regardless of who is batting, statistically you’re more likely to score by not sacrificing an out.

Clearly those odds change depending on who’s batting. But all in all, that’s what the numbers suggest as a whole. (And since most hitters fail most of the time, you figure that’s weighted in as well)

It would actually be kind of interesting to learn where/when the sacrifice bunt came into fashion, and what the thinking was on it. It’s taken as a given nowadays (to the point that you get an exemption for your Batting Average when sacrificing). But it’s kind of stupid according to the numbers I’ve seen.

Though if someone smarter comes along and can explain to me that I’m wrong, I’d be all ears.

Greetings

Cubs fans. I see we have captured an elusive creature… the Lead…

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

by Ryanocm1 on Jul 1, 2009 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

not so fast

remember – he put in a lot of time with Tram ever since he was called up. Lou’s position always was that Fox wasn’t going to play at 3rd until Trammel said he was ready. So maybe Fox wasn’t that good at Iowa with the glove, came up to the big leagues, and took a crash course with Tram.

You know, it’s like blowing off the whole semester and then pulling all-nighters and cramming before finals. Remember? ;-)

Blanco

bounces out. Three outs.

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. When they win the division, and then get swept in the division series. When they get no-hitters and when they blow no-hitters. And some day, when they go all the way and get those rings. This is the kind of fan I am.

and we didn't even bunt.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Jul 1, 2009 6:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that's the worse part.

We have the lowest batting average with RISP among all MLB teams, and yet we don’t try to bunt and manufacture a run. Makes no sense to me, either.

Favorite player of all time: Ryne Sandberg.

pissed if Bradley had not tried to score there.

Ted Lilly would of taken a more aggressive approach

but since Milt’s made of porcelain, I guess he’ll slide in

I agree

but was it close?

Blanco

to the plate with 2 outs does not generate a ton of confidence in me. Its truly sad that our reigning ROY cannot hit a fly ball in that situation. 3-1 count you should hit the ball better than that.

No

I was serious. I’m listening, not watching. Was he close to scoring?

let's not confuse a 2 run HR with executing situational hitting

Its great the Cubs put up a 2 spot but they are not showing any improvement in situational hitting or smart baseball. 5 runs so far in the 3 games against joke Pirate pitchers. I kind of take issue with Brenly ripping on Dome. He doesn’t know where the 3B is going with the ball, if he keeps running there and for some reason 3B bobbles it he’s running directly into an out

by BeltwayCubsFan on Jul 1, 2009 7:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

what?!

Fuld was in scoring position. I’ll grant you that Lee’s hit is only ONE hit bu it was with RISP. That’s situational hitting.
