The Return of Juan Pierre?

Would you like to see Juan Pierre return to the Cubs?

With Manny coming back, it’s obvious that Juan Pierre will be returning to the bench. What’s sad is that he is having a career year. I wonder if part of the reason he has been busting rear is because he wants to play FT. With Manny coming back, do you think the Dodgers might shop him around as trade bait? If so, should the Cubs look into re-acquiring him? Or is there better options out there of Hendry to look at? Could he be the Kenny Lofton of '09?

Al had a post that Juan wants to be traded...

…its 3 months old… Don’t mean to make anybody mad.

I think

revisiting a topic three months down the road, especially after Juan’s resurgence in LA, is probably ok. :D

I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. When they play over their heads, and when they play under the gutter. Juan Pierre is having a big year...

Look at his stats. I have no idea if his contract expires soon though. He may not be a good piece of the puzzle, but to think that his stats wouldn’t look good on this Cubs team…well, you must not want the Cubs to win.

Like I said, he may not be the best piece of the puzzle, but his stats would look good. Who knows if he could keep it up though. He may be having his career season, like Dempster and MB did last year. Still, if he had it with us… would be nice.

In my opinion.

I have no idea what the Dodgers want/need...

…. I just wondered if the Dodgers might seriously want to get rid of him now with Manny returning, and if this would be something Hendry should look into. I was wondering what you all think on BCB.

by TheHawkRules on Jul 1, 2009 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK, well, I say absolutely not.

Pierre’s stats this year are mostly based on an absurdly high BABIP earlier in the season. Not sure where he’s at now. He is a pretty decent defensive centerfielder in terms of range – IIRC, his UZR numbers are pretty decent – but his arm is bad. Mythically bad. And, as others have noted, the Cubs have plenty o’ outfielders. The team needs a bat and – his remarkable ’09 aside – Juan Pierre is not a bat.

But all this is academic, because Jim Hendry would never even consider trading for Juan Pierre again after getting burned so bad the first time.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Well then

First of all, Juan PIerre isn’t the answer to a lot of questions but if the question is whether he’s better than the Cubs current leadoff hitter, the answer is yes. Soriano’s baseball card may look better on the back than Pierre’s but Pierre has been much more produtive than Soriano over the past two months. Will that continue? Who knows but if he’s cheap he’d be a fine alternative to the fly-swatter they currently have in LF.

So you’d substitute a guy that can still run, will get on base at a decent but not spectacular rate that can actually catch a fly ball and play a competent LF while having to kick it in from the OF for a guy that has been absolutely lost at the plate for nearly 8 weeks, loafs in the OF, refuses to hustle, can no longer run but can throw with the best of them.

I’m not sure how you want to value the two but I’d say the answer is far less definitive as you’d believe it is.

Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

by krummy12 on Jul 1, 2009 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, it's definitive...

because the Cubs aren’t going to pay another OF $10 million per year for the next 2.5 years.

Fine. Drop Soriano from the leadoff spot...

…and Juan Pierre still sucks.

our OF is crowded enough already

with Fox, Houff, Fuku, Bradley, Sori, Johnson, etc. … where the hell is Pierre going to play and when?

Evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.

by junkhorse on Jul 1, 2009 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's if none of them would be in the trade...

… or would be in another. Obviously if Hendry did trade for him, there would be a place for him to play.

by TheHawkRules on Jul 1, 2009 12:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Unless I'm missing something...

…it seems unlikely the Dodgers would want any of the Cubs current crop of outfielders and quasi-outfielders (Fox, Hoffpauir).

You are prolly right...

… I dunno…

Maybe Pierre isn’t a good fit… that’s why I brought it up. I dunno… For whatever reason, I just don’t have much faith in Hendry right now. I used to, but this season has been bad. I dunno…

by TheHawkRules on Jul 1, 2009 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Pierre isn't the answer.

And, like I said, Hendry is not going to risk further damage to his tattered reputation by re-trading for a player he got burned on the first time.

by dat cubfan daver on Jul 1, 2009 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Makes sense

…. yeah, with the facts brought forth, especially the $ involved… it probably wouldn’t be a good deal.

Now, with how the year has gone thus far, watch Hendry make a trade and get him! lol That would be messed up.

by TheHawkRules on Jul 1, 2009 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Come on

Please look through the numbers to see how Hendry got “burned” in the Pierre deal. A season of good starts from Nolasco, a strikeout and walk based LH reliever and a guy out of baseball. Hardly the huge package people believe was dealt for Pierre.

Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

by krummy12 on Jul 1, 2009 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was referring to Nolasco alone, of course.

Starting pitching is valuable. More valuable than a season of 200 inconsequential slap singles from Juan “Uber-Leadoff Man” Pierre. And I know Nolasco has struggled this year – but don’t count him out just yet. He had a pretty good June and is sporting some pretty sick K numbers. His FIP is under four, too.

That was my question

What would you do with Pierre and please don’t say trade Fukudome for him. That isn’t happening. The Cubs owe $8 mil more in 10/11 than the Dodgers do Pierre. i don’t see the Cubs sending $8 mil to the Dodgers.

by rlpete on Jul 1, 2009 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

play him...

What do you think I would do with him? I don’t know if the Dodgers would want Fukudome, but, he needs to sit on the bench because he isn’t cutting it…especially against lefties.

by dat cubfan daver on Jul 1, 2009 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pierre isn't that good, and his contract is very big, and so are the contracts in our OF...

Pierre is making $10 million this year, $10 million in 2010, and $8.5 million in 2011. That’s too much money for a guy who has a career 85 OPS+. Yes, he had a fabulous May when Ramirez first went out. But he’s gone .264/.319/.309 in June. It appears that he’s returning to his typical mediocre OBP and no power form (i.e., below average offensive player).

But just as importantly, we have a full OF picture through the length of his contract. We have close to $50 million invested in our starting OF. The reason he wants out of Dodgertown is because they have too many OF. He’d be moving into the same situation here.

We aren’t going to get Juan Pierre.

by SouthernCub on Jul 1, 2009 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yuck

Yeah, i didnt know his contract status. I don’t like it and it, as it is, wouldn’t work for this team.

Stats

Pierre is hitting… .324. Has 21 steals. His OBP is .385. By the way… he has more RBI’s than Milton. Maybe there could be some sort of trade there…

Bradley for Pierre? Haha… what do you all think of that?

by TheHawkRules on Jul 1, 2009 12:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Aaaaaaand his OPS is still under .800, though just barely.

Look at his numbers in June – he’s come back down to earth. He’s put up a paltry .628 OPS in 122 PAs.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

by dat cubfan daver on Jul 1, 2009 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Those numbers are buoyed by an unbelievable May...

check out what he’s done in June. And then check out what he’s done the past four years. He’s not as good as his numbers suggest.

Bradley, on the other hand, despite having a terrible start, is only 60 points behind Pierre in OPS. So while Pierre is likely to decline back to his norms, Bradley is likely to improve. And Bradley’s norm is much better than Pierre’s norm.

You’re basically suggesting that we buy high and sell low. That’s not a good move.

by SouthernCub on Jul 1, 2009 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

MB for Pierre...

… may not be a good deal, but, the Dodgers would likely get more for Pierre than we would for Bradley. That’s my opinion…

Under what circumstances would you be interested in trading for Juan Pierre:
1) I still wouldn’t want Juan Pierre if the Dodgers were willing to trade him for Aaron Miles.
2) I still wouldn’t want Juan Pierre if the Dodgers paid his entire contract and Lou promised not to start him.
3) I still wouldn’t want Juan Pierre if the Dodgers threw in our pick of three pitching prospects as restitution for the original Juan Pierre trade.
4) I still wouldn’t want Juan Pierre if he could play top-tier SS defense.

No point on acquiring Pierre

He’ll be insignificant for the Cubs because once Reed Johnson returns, Pierre will not get any starting time in CF/RF. I also don’t think MB will not be benched by Lou since they already invested a good amount of $$$ on him.

I really want this team to shore up on the pen during midseason because without a above average-decent bullpen this team will not make the playoffs.

Does Soriano's defense at 2B really cost more runs than in LF? He makes a lot fewer errors in LF since misplays and mental mistakes aren't figured into the stats, but I have to imagine that his mistakes are more physical at 2B. Any thoughts? Is there a statistic on this?
