My father doesn't understand text messaging
he once brought his phone over because it kept beeping and he didn’t know why. It was a text from my sister, which she accidentally sent him instead of me. Apparently his phone had been beeping at him for a day or two.
Nice catch, Dome!

Nothwithstanding this wind-blown Wrigley HR
Pujols hits the ball farther and harder than anyone. He has to be among the strongest hitters in the game. Ahem.
by ElHijoDelRonSanto on Jul 10, 2009 3:22 PM CDT reply actions
Ridiculous
You have to pitch to Pujols when he comes up first in the inning. Ludwick hits home runs, too.

Who’da thunk it?

you don't have to pitch to pujols.
ludwick is a good hitter, but he is not pujols. you make him prove that he can beat you.

agreed. if ludwick hurts you a couple times. then let pujols hit.

i understand. i'd rather face a hot ludwick than any pujols.

He’s kinda the exception to the rule, especially with the way he’s hitting this year.

Off topic but Bob Watson is an arse
Baltimore manager Dave Trembley has been suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount following his ejection in the first inning of the Orioles’ game against the Seattle Mariners earlier this week.
Bob Watson, Major League Baseball’s vice president in charge of discipline, said Friday that Trembley violated a rule that states an ejected manager must take no further part in a game.
Trembley was tossed Tuesday night for arguing a baserunning call. He told reporters after the game that when Luke Scott(notes) came into the clubhouse, Trembley told him to "get me a couple" runs.
by WanderingWanderer on Jul 10, 2009 3:29 PM CDT reply actions
Then Scott said, "wow, great idea skip! I wasn't going to do that, but now I will make it happen for sure!"
"I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I recognize Missourah." - Abe Simpson
Doesn't make sense to me.
“Get me a couple” is managing from the clubhouse? Then I’m managing from my computer right now.
He's watching the game, and says "get me a couple" runs?
Doesn’t make sense at all.

And kept trying to make his way back to the dugout with disguises. I could swear there was someone who put their cap down real low and zipped their jacket up to the neck, like no one would notice him if he was dressed like that.

I think that I do this, but to type endlessly that Soriano needs to understand the strike zone...
Seems a bit repetive. Say it once, then after that, comments on the current at bat seem appropriate. For Sorryano it is not a case to be debated. He doesn’t understand what a strike looks like, the whole league knows it, he flails at pitches that are unhittable, and he hurts the team with his lack or inability to play fundamental baseball (taking good routes to fly balls, staying focussed throughout the play, communicating to other fielders, moving the runner, etc….). What kind of analysis do you want?

I watched them at Wrigley come back against the Indians from being 7 down
I watched them at Wrigley last September when they came back to beat the Brewers. I watched them on TV overcome a double digit deficit, and the season before that I watched them go from last to first. You’re a fool to believe this team, or any team for that matter, can’t come back. No one is unhittable, not Carpenter, not Lincecum, etc. It’s like talking about guys that won’t get knocked out. Everyone can be KO’d, whether if it’s Pac, Fedor, Lyoto, etc.

Ok, we star this again. Listen up...
Even Al concurs on this, so listen up. This board serves many purposes, chief among them is communicating with people who are passionate about the cubs. For whatever reason, we don’t have a living room full of people to converse with about the game. I don’t live near my cub fan family, and I don’t have any cub fan close friends (I live in St. Louis). Venting is cathartic. Venting with people who share your likes, dislikes, feelings, etc….can be extremely cathartic. When your team is letting you down…and doing it so spectacularly, and you spend money and time on them, it is FRUSTRATING. PERIOD. This is not just a board for those people like Sue, NBF, and Drew, and Joe, etc… but it is also a place where people like Kanderber and myself and others can vent a little (especially when done properly). Please, stop engaging in this discourse of “just go away”. It is insulting, and you have no right to it. Thank you for your support. Realize, we have been dealing with a tremendously underacheiving team, filled with negative personalities (not all, I know), and today we have witnessed TERRIBLE baseball. A six inning implosion of pitching, fielding, and poor fundamentals. Followed by a response by the batters of having the side struck out, followed by a leadoff walk, and that crappy defense on a ball where the cardinals are trying to give us outs. GET REAL PEOPLE!!

Any major league left-fielder should have caught a ball that just bounced out of his glove.
"I'm not much of a chemistry guy, you know. Chemistry to me is a pinch-hit double with the bases loaded"--Jim Frey, Chicago Tribune, 1985.
I didn't say it was his fault, but that ball was an OFs ball, not a SSs ball.
Fonzie was trying to avoid a collision, then realized that he would have to make a play on that ball.

Theriot should go after that ball until someone behind him calls it off...
Theriot eventually ducked out of the way, likely when he heard Sori call him off.
To blame anyone but Soriano there is just patently absurd.
What is absurd is Theriot calling off OFs, when it clearly is not his play.
I'm a truth teller, I'm a risk taker, I'm like Johnny Cash - I walk the line...
by Jimmyeatworld on Jul 10, 2009 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions
HE DIDN'T CALL THEM OFF.
Are you watching the game?! Theriot was on the freaking ground when that ball bounced off of Soriano’s glove. Christ.
I can't help it that you didn't see Theriot wave his arm before he went to the ground.
I'm a truth teller, I'm a risk taker, I'm like Johnny Cash - I walk the line...
by Jimmyeatworld on Jul 10, 2009 4:13 PM CDT up reply actions
It was a combination of both their faults
Theriots hands were up…but I don’t think he was waving them. that could have made the outfielders think that he lost the ball or that he was calling it. Soriano and RJ as the outfielders should have taken charge of that fly ball. Soriano was closer and I think he took control of that at the end when he saw Theriot give up on the ball. Soriano should have made that play.
by aznsensation on Jul 10, 2009 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions
Bottom line: If Theriot makes that catch, (as he clearly was calling off the OFs to do), then Pujols tags and scores, if an OF, (either Fonzie or RJ ) make the catch coming in, Pujols doesn't tag.
In order to avoid a clusterfuck collision of THREE players, (caused by Theriot- why else would he wave his arms?), Fonzie was distracted and dropped the ball. Please people try to understand the game.

Ugh.
Are you new to baseball? The SS should go after that ball hard until he is called off by the outfielder. That’s what he did. Soriano (finally) got in position, called him off, Theriot went to the ground, and then Sori had the ball bounce off his mitt.
Theriot didn’t affect Soriano in the slightest way. Blaming Theriot for Soriano failing to make the catch is just flat out stupid.
Jesus Christ, how am I having an argument with someone over this? Ball bounces off of player A’s glove and you’re blaming another player. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
The depth that Theriot had to go into the OF clearly made it an OFs ball...
Simple. I’m done with this. You see what you want, I don’t give a shit anymore.

No shit it was an OF's ball!
But Theriot surely knows that Soriano sucks at basebal, and most relevantly there, sucks at defense. So of course he went after the ball! What should he have done… just stood there?
I’m glad you’re done with this. It’s a terrible argument.

It’s that simple. Why do you think Theriot peeled off at the last second ? I just watched the replay again, and Theriot handled that play by the book. He took the play until Soriano called him off. And Soriano DID call him off.

by WanderingWanderer on Jul 10, 2009 4:12 PM CDT up reply actions

by drewishdrewid on Jul 10, 2009 4:13 PM CDT up reply actions
NO ONE IS QUESTIONING YOU ABOUT BEING A FAN
At some point one of you is going to answer this question: If there is something that makes you SO upset, so upset that it ruins your summer, or makes you come on here and make others miserable, why do you still do that thing, in this case, watching a losing game? All we’re asking if to end the non-stop diarrhea of complaining that some of you exibit. None of you actually posit anything, you just complain. So fine, you’re a fan, great. No one is telling you that you aren’t, but why do you, or anyone else for that matter, continue to do something that makes you this upset? It’s amusing, it really is, and even funnier is that none of you realize how annoying you are to have around when you behave in that manner. So, I mean, go ahead and do whatever you want, no one is stopping you, but I would just like an answer as to why you continue to watch when they make you so mad. At some point, whether if you have a helmet on or not, you have to stop and think, “Hey, continuously bashing my head against the wall is not condusive to having a good day.”

Uncle.
Back under .500, losing to the first place team in SPECTACULAR fashion, one extra base hit, terrible at bats, untimely walks issued to the opposition. Bah.
Go get them tomorrow! Remind us why we root for you!!!!! Turn it around, or blow this team up. Show us a well played game tomorrow Cubbies!!!! We demand it from you!!!!!
Go Cubs!!!

No, I'm pretty sure I read it correct
Go get em tomorrow…Ok, cool. Turn it around…alright…or blow the team up? I just think it’s funny how he in all the positivity he sneaks in an “or else” statement.

I'm fairly certain he doesn't mean they should all be incinerated in a blast of C4
I think he means start rebuilding, get rid of the dead weight, you know, trade or release certain players, not execute them
Fairly certain you know what he meant too…………………..

I'm now fairly certain you don't understand what facetious means...

The thing that really hurts is that this team is not even being competitive....
Someone on this team needs to light a spark in some of these players. Whether that be a big trade or Lou throwing a tantrum…something needs to happen to wake our players up.
I think what hurts worse is that the guys who are supposed to be hitting
are not hitting. I think they’re competitive enough, but whether if it’s something mental or physical, they have to get it figured out.

only place where Lou throwing a tantrum would help
is if it was right after he handed in his resignation

Yep, it all falls on the coach when the team isn't competitive.

Will the Cubs use the AS break to get their heads straight? is that too late?
They did not perform like a major League Team today

Trade Harden!
He’s probably hurt, but doesn’t quite know it yet.

don’t interpret me calling you on your negativity and speculating that you may actually be a cards, brewers, or sux fan as me saying anything about your right to vent or otherwise post, such that you need to invoke Al in defense of your right to vent. i dont care what people use their posting privilges for – say fuck, sell offensive t-shirts, make fun of people, whatever for all i care – that is up to Al.
but you should expect some blowback when you post as follows:
Poor fundamentals, manager that seems uninterested most of the time, sori, bradley, dome, weed smokin’, umpire baiting, perpetual whining, etc….ANNOYING
Again, the way this team is assembled…they are just tough to root for.
I respond because i just dont understand why you are watching when it is so painful, not to say that you have no right to be as negative as you are.
in looking through your posts, i did see this one that i miseed -
I just am a little more doom and gloom knowing that I have to deal with shitheads the next day at work.
i went to Mizzou, so i can understand your pain, and that explains a lot.
I’ll put it very politely…you can trust me that I’ve played at levels much higher than you might otherwise believe. You may not like my criticism but you cannot question my resume. I suggest you leave it at that.
