Going to keep it that way?

How bad is it in the other place?

I mean folks can rip on Heilman all they want

But his performance is kind of besides the point and not the problem with this team. EVERY team in this league has an Aaron Heilman in the bullpen. All of them. The reason it is relevant for the Cubs is we have an offense that doesn’t score which means ‘our’ Heilman must consistently pitch in close games; we have starting pitchers that, at best, can go 7 innings (and really only Lilly and Wells have done that consistently), and the rest of them go maybe 6 innings. So this belief that we will magically go on a run when we are requiring our bullpen to go 3-4 innings a game is fantasy. We’ve scored in 5 of the last 34 innings, combined this is why we will be 7 1/2 games out of first when Chicago wakes up Monday morning – STL is in an entirely different class than us.

by BeltwayCubsFan on Jul 10, 2009 4:07 PM CDT reply actions

This is why...

…teams that have solid bullpens have a real good chance to be competitive, especially in today’s game. If you can avoid having that one guy who tends to get lit up, it pays of big time over 162.

heilman had a bad outing, ADMITTED

BUT; he was required to obtain 5 outs that inning between the drooped pop-up & missed tag

No

I understand. In 10 minutes, I’ll care more about Hank Hill on Ch.32.

it's sad that games like this are getting to be expected.

there is really something “Dusty-like” infecting this team and it is hard to watch.

I’ll still watch, it’s just the expectations are dropping fast.

Nope

The closest was the 4th, and that’s when Carpenter got the lead-off walk, followed by three outs.

Did you see how adamant Theriot was at calling off Soriano?

That said a lot about this team to me.

I'm glad that no one posted a jump in the last thread...

I was tiring of explaining the game to idiots who don’t know what they are talking about, and see only what they want to see. I can come over here, and not have to deal with the ignorance.

A Swiss no-one

Contador had a killer stage this morning and looks poised to take the lead. Armstrong dropped one spot and looks to help Contador if he continues to dominate.

Another meaningless hit by Soriano

Enough of this one at bat can change everything. Soriano is a whiny, overpaid bitch. Now go cry again to the media about your manager.

I'll be betting on the Cubs in the NLCS in Vegas in October! Believe!

And Harden and Heilman shat the bed.

I hate this team. I really hate the makeup of this team. No guts and no character whatsoever.

by lexmarklover on Jul 10, 2009 4:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Lee is the only reason

this team isn’t in dead last. all of our recent wins can be traced to him. They just need to blow up the team – dump Harden, he is terrible, and start fresh next year. Let the young guys play so we don’t have to stare at Soriano again in 2010

Lilly is 33. And how about position players?

by Jody Jody Davis on Jul 10, 2009 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions

My mistake

The starting pitching (for the most part) has been really good. The problem (as it has been for the last 20 years) is the lack of position players coming from the farm system, which leads to overpaying for guys like Soriano, Bradley, etc.

by wallrock on Jul 10, 2009 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm to the point where when I see a BB, I want to see the pitcher drop and do 20 push-up's

Throw strikes or go somewhere else. This is not a comment on Stevens, but I just thought of it when he went behind 2-0 on his first batter-I do realize he’s probably quite nervous
