Hurts the team in two ways

Will be interesting to see how the teams ERA goes up/down without Soto.

Well on the bright side, give Fox a chance to catch. Maybe this is how we get him in the lineup everyday.

Internal Options

Chris Robinson (Iowa): Batting .315 in 200 ABs, but it is very empty (.321 OBP, .430 SLG, 1 HR). I have no clue about his defensive abilities.

Steve Clevinger (Iowa/Tennessee): Nice numbers split between two levels (.318/.373/.424 in 198 ABs), though his numbers at Iowa so far are a bit flat as well (.289/.326/.355). Might be a bit too early to bring him up.

Welington Castillo (Tennessee): Having a dreadful season (.177/.227/.296) and is not an option.

I can’t imagine the Cubs giving Fox more than a few innings a month at C (much too important of a position, can’t get by with someone doing it poorly). If a trade can’t be done, I expect to see Robinson up by Saturday.

Chris Robinson

We saw him play a lot for the Illini (he was the highest position player ever drafted out of the Univ. of Illinois)…I actually hadn’t much figured he would make it past AA, however, he was always a super-hard worker and a more than just “scrappy” backstop, to be certain. For sentimental reasons I would love to see him have a cup of coffee in the bigs, for sure…I suspect he would be at least as serviceable as, say, Jason Kendall.

No matter what happens this year with the team

I think we can call this a lost year for Soto.

Maybe next year, he’ll get in shape.

would be nice

baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out

by Cubbie-Tim on Jul 10, 2009 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Regardless of what happens the rest of the year with him

He BETTER come into camp in better shape.

(and this is coming from someone who is a big fan of his)

by Madison Cub Fan on Jul 10, 2009 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe this is the so-called "come to Jesus" experience for him

And he’ll take conditioning seriously for the rest of his career. Otherwise, the rest of his career might not be that long.

Hey, I’m shocked that no one’s posted a “This wouldn’t have happened if we’d kept Blanco” fanshot or fanpost.

Interesting decision to wait until tomorrow for Soto's replacement

Whoever comes in to catch will need to be added to the 40 man roster. Robinson seems to make the most sense. I think this is his 5th year in the minors, so he may need to be added to the 40 man anyway to protect him from the Rule 5 draft after the season.

Maybe Soto’s injury is more serious than is being reported. Oblique strains can take a while to heal.

What do you think the Cubs should do if Soto’s injury will keep him out for more than a month?

Ryan Doumat is ready to come of the DL. So is are old buddy Michael Barrett. The Pirates and Blue Jays are both in dealing mode. Hmm…

I'd rather have tom veryzer catching than Michael Barrett

And I don’ t mean the former Cub MI. I mean you.

Get Kelly Shoppach

The Indians have a stud catching prospect who will be ready next year. Shoppach can hit lefties just fine. Ask for Kelly and Rafael Betancourt, send them Aaron Miles to even out the money, then give them two prospects they want. I’d suggest guys along the lines of Cris Carpenter and Darwin Barney. Or, if they want major-league ready players, Ascanio and Atkins.

I'd love to have Shoppach.

But I can’t see the Indians trading him unless you give them better prospects than that. I doubt they’d be interested in Atkins.

Screw it

Pick up some veteran stiff on the waiver wire and be done with it. This is a lost season. Last thing to do is go out and trade away more young talent for another catcher.

Lost season for Soto. He’s seriously got to get his act together between now and next February. As in drop 30 pounds and commit himself to his paid profession.

$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.

I am pretty sure the Cubs could get Blanco

for a prospect . He is actually having a bad year at the plate at least and I am sure Padres would trade him but no idea how good a prospect it would take.

I'd prefer not

soto

great another injury for a lost season. hill cannot hit so now we have 2 automatic outs at the bottom.

by NOMAR on Jul 11, 2009 6:50 AM CDT reply actions

Well not when Harden and Z bat

Actually Hill is not a terrible hitting catcher but obviously a huge downgrade from a healthy Soto.
