My Thoughts on the First Half

Hello,

How about that first half? I guess that’s why they call it Chicago! (hahaha)

Star-divide

You guys may not know this, but I consider myself…a bit of a loaner. I tend to think of myself as a one man "Wolf Pack."  But when my favorite team brought Milton home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack, it grew by one. So we were two…there was two of us in the pack. I…I was alone first in the pack, and then Milton joined in later.

And 6 months ago, when Milton introduced me to you guys. I thought…wait a second, could it be. And now I know for sure, I just added 2 more guys to my wolf pack. 4 of us wolves running around in Wrigley together, in Chicago looking for singles and RBI's with runners in scoring position. So tonight, we make a toast!

Here's to the second half, Cubs fans... let's make this a season to remember!  They can take our RISP... but they can never take... Judd Sirott's BOREDOM!

----------------

Ok, so... on a serious note... that was a pretty crazy first half... I've been participating on BCB for... almost 3 years now... and never before have I actually purposely avoid game threads.  That doesn't mean I wasn't thinking about the site... every up an down my first through was "Wow, SWL must be posting some hilarious pictures now."  Or "Wow, Blous must be bithcing up a storm!"  But through all of it, our Cubs stayed close, and kept a race... Now, with Aramis back, and our pitchers continuing to give us great starts, we're positioned to have a great second half.  Our guys will be rested, the schedule is in out favor... now is the time to strike.  I have a feeling this is going to be a summer/fall to remember... and it's going to be a great ride.  The next few days will be a great rest, and a great chance to gather out thoughts, hit Photoshop for some hilarious new game thread images, and in general recharge our batteries for what is sure to be one hell of a ride in the second half.  Go Cubs, and hopefully we'll be playing late into the fall this year!

Oh, and I almost forgot...

i THINK THE CUBS NEED TO LOOK INTO A TRADE WITH THE BLUE JAYS FOR ADAM LIND.  HE IS A GREAT HITTER HE CAN PLAY THE OUTFIELD AND TAKE MILTONS SPOT?  WOULD BE A GREAT TRADE.  LIND IS TYPICALLY USED AS A DH IN TORONTO BUT HE COULD BE A BACKUP FOR D LEE AND HE IS A LEFT HANDED BAT THAT DONT STRIKE OUT VERY OFTEN.  WOULD MAKE A GREAT 2 HITTER.  MAYBE TRADE FUKUDOME AND START HOFFPUIR EVERYDAY?  TOO GOOD LEFT HANDED BATS AND ONE IDIOT IN BRADLEY GONE.  ALSO A LOT CHEAPER IN THE LONG RUN

Forget it

The Cubs will not, and cannot, trade either the Dome or Gameboard. Neither will they let all that money ride the bench. Like it not, those two and Soriano are our regular outfielders and will remain so. From my perspective, I really think Bradley is going to come back strong in the second half, assuming he can stay healthy. I’m not as sure about Soriano. I think he’ll have some hot stretches, but they’ll be fewer and shorter than we’ve seen in the past. That being said, as long as we keep him out of the leadoff position, we can win with him hitting .225, as long as our other studs hit like they can.

I don’t see us making a huge trade. First, we don’t have the prospects to sell. Second, the ownership is still unsettled and impacts how much money we can spend. Third, who are we going to trade for? Our pitching is strong, the bullpen, while not great, is better than average, our infield and catching are passable and, as I stated above, our outfield is what it is. The only positions I can possibly see are a second baseman, or a shortstop and move The Riot to second. I don’t see very many middle infielders out there that are significantly better than what we have and that will be available. I also don’t believe Hendry will sacrifice any of our limited young talent unless he feels the player we get will not only get us into the post season, but also into the World Series. I just don’t see that happening.

All that being said, I still believe we’ll win the division. The Cardinals are loaded with rookies, some of whom will likely hit the wall in the second half. I think the Brewers are playing over their heads and they’l be under .500 the second half. Fearless forecast: The Cubs will go 45-31 for the rest of the season and finish 3 games ahead of the Cards and 5 games ahead of the Brew Crew.

The Eric Hanna reference

That made this post a winner. Rec’d.

My thoughts

Of course we gotta start hitting and get healthy. A few other things I wanna see are: Lou pick a damn lineup and stay with it. This flip flopping every day is plain stupid. Like last year our baserunning blunders are still too common. My gosh guys it’s little league 101. Isn’t Alan Trammell responsible for baserunning? Who ever it is should be fired! Al mentioned in the recap that we may have some bullpen help on the way. If that’s the case hopefully we identify all of their roles rather quickly and have a good pen.

TWSS

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
