Contract Info for all Cubs players..
Just a handy little guide to the conditions/amount/length of each player's contract. Considering the amount of trade suggestions lately, thought this might help.
Things I didn't know:
1. Riot's only making a half million this year?
2. Ted Lilly got a 75k bonus for making the AS team
3. Kosuke gets 8 free round trip tickets a year for his family

Love that site.
That’s the best contract reference site online, IMO.
It lists Zambrano, Soriano and Ramirez as having full no trade clauses, and Lee with a no trade clause (the word full isn’t there). I always thought Lee had a full NTC… anyone know for certain?
Also, I’d be curious to know if there’s a team in baseball that has more players with NTC’s. I doubt it.
Many of those NTCs are irrelevant...
Soriano’s contract made him untradeable until toward the end of his contract. By then, he’d have 10-and-5 rights anyway. The same is true of Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster. Ramirez already has 10 and 5 rights.
The only NTC that are debatable are the ones for Derrek Lee, Lilly and Fukudome. And when the contract was signed, Lee was coming off a monster season and it didn’t seem like they’d want to trade him. And I’d suspect that the NTC was a key part of landing Fukudome, because being in a Japanese-friendly media location means a lot for a “star” coming over.
But for the most part, the NTCs are non-issues, because those players would have 10-and-5 no-trade rights by the time they’d be tradable anyway.
That's correct...
Really, the only questionable NTC is Lilly. All of the other players except Lilly and Fukudome are/were going to become 10 and 5 guys by the time they’d realistically be tradable anyway. And Fukudome had leverage to get the NTC as a high-profile player coming over from Japan.
So really, Lilly is the only guy with a NTC that is of any real consequence.
Interesting.
Never thought of it that way.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
Yes, but he could EVENTUALLY be tradable...
In year 3 or 4 of the deal, he would be movable. But with the NTC he can’t be without his consent. However, it’s a moot point, because he probably wasn’t signing with any MLB team without a NTC.
Marmol's a deal!
$575,000 – geez!

$100 k per walk?
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
that'd mean only 5.75 walks...
that’d be terrific
Theriot and Marmol's salaries are a function of the MLB salary structure...
Players who aren’t yet arbitration eligible are generally signed to renewable one-year contracts at a set salary based on service time. They don’t start making “real” money until they become arbitration eligible. And even then, it escalates progressively. It’s not until year 5 or 6 that players hit the big paydays.
There are exceptions like Crawford, Baldelli, and Pedroia, in which the team “buys out” the arbitration years and signs a younger player to a long-term deal. But those are still fairly infrequent.
Nice link! Thanks!
I’m guessing Ramirez will opt out after 2010, so it looks like we could be looking for a 1B and 3B after next season.
Well, I'd have said he'd certainly opt out, but the injury makes it debatable...
Hopefully, he returns to form and is good enough to opt out. It’ll make us a better team until then.
Why do you think he would opt out?
I’m curious what your reasoning is, not being critical at all. If I remember correctly, I think he filed/became a free agent, but we ended up signing him the last time his contract ended (I do not recall if he opted out then, or not).
He opted out last time...
If he has a good year next year, he’ll likely opt out again. It pays to play the free agent game. He’d very possibly be in line to make a lot more money signing as a 32-year old free agent than he would as a 34-year old free agent.
The question will be where the state of baseball is financially next offseason, and how healthy and productive he is next year. But if the money is there and he has a good year, it makes perfect sense for him to opt out.
That doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t remain a Cub. He could very easily opt out and then re-sign with the Cubs for more money.
Okay.
I kind of assumed that is what you were thinking, but I did not know if I missed something that would make him no longer want to play for the Cubs after next year (he does not like playing for Lou, etc.).
I agree with what you are saying, and that is a good point about the financial position of baseball.
Why would he opt out?
He chose to stay in Chicago for a discount. He’d be the Angels 3B otherwise.
He chose to stay only after he opted out...
Opting out doesn’t necessarily mean leaving. It just means getting a better deal.
Cot's is an outstanding reference tool.
I use it all the time.

Cubs are saddled with a crapload of immovable players
Soriano, Fukudome, Bradley, Miles, Dempster. You couldn’t move those contracts if you tried.
$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.
I suspect that if Fukudome doesn't have a good 2nd half...
… they may work out some sort of buyout and he’ll go back to Japan.

Hope springs eternal.....
Didn’t you have the same suspicions after his collapse last year? :)
That being said, it could eventually happen. You never know.

But....
with this much info, we’re gonna miss the Eric Hannas and BBrowns of the world and their outstanding posts….
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.
With the recent flurry of trade proposals
that didn’t consider the salary impacts, it was good to repost but to let everyone know, Al has this posted in the General Baseball Links section on the left hand side of the main page.
Didn't know that....
Good to know.

Unreal
$115.825 for 10 players, including the entire outfield.
Yup, that's the danger of the long-term contracts...
and it’s why it’s increasingly important that guys like Theriot and other cheap players (and pitchers) pan out. Unless you are the Yankees, you can’t keep upping the payroll to fill voids. And of course, it’s important that those big money guys start producing again.
The biggest problem this year is that with the exception of Lilly, Lee, and Zambrano, none of our big-money guys are performing. Soriano, Bradley, Dempster (to a degree), Fukudome (since June), and Harden are really underproducing, and Ramirez has been too injured to produce.
They'd be fine if they were getting elite value for their elite salaries.
The Soriano-Fukudome-Bradley OF is just killing this team’s payroll.

I love this tidbit under Aaron Miles:
award bonuses: $0.1M for MVP ($50,000 for 2nd in voting, $25,000 for 3rd), $50,000 each for LDS, LCS, WS MVP, Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, All Star ($25,000 for selection)
Really? Is his agent serious?? haha

silver slugger?
what for using a ‘wiffle bat’?
I bet those
are standard in almost any contract. He DID hit over .300 last year.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

I kept misreading the title of this Fanshot as...
…“CONTACT info for all Cubs players.” And I’m a little disappointed to learn Jessica won’t be getting Sam Fuld’s cell phone number.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
I'm sure he's already on speed dial.

Talking about Riot...
Will he be a free agent after this year? What kind of money do you guys think he will ask for? What do the Cubs think he is worth?
It takes 6 years to become a free agent.
Riot will get raises through salary arbitration – or, more likely, in lieu of salary arbitration.
The Cubs are fortunate that Riot was such a late developer, as his prime years will have been salary controlled.
Then, when he hits free agency at 33 or whatever, the future version of Jim Hendry will give him 4 years and $10M.

Hey, could happen if he makes a ton of OF assists in the second half.
Remember, gold gloves have little to nothing to do with actual defense.
