Cubs Sign BJ Ryan!!!!
The Cubs have signed lefty reliever BJ Ryan according to Espn Chicago. Here's the link!!!
I'm all for the move. Hopefully he can correct whatever it was that was making pitch horribly. He would be a great addition to our pen if he found a way to get back to his old self. Here is a link to his career stats. No word on when he will suit up but I'm sure it will probably Friday night in Washington. The deal is for 1yr.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I'm starting to get real sick of you man!
You don’t run anything on this site. If you don’t like that start your own site! When I started it there wasn’t anything on it yet!

Who cares if there was?
This should be a FanPost anyway. Carry on, dude.

No,
It really shouldn’t be.
Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.
Why is this such a big deal for you?
So this is a duplicate thread? If you find it so offensive or annoying, you could’ve done the intelligent thing, ignore it, but no you had to pop off.

I get it, boys. You are making fun of my tendency to non-sequitir as a statement against posts. Fair enough.
But there is a difference between MOCKING a post on its merits and instantly screaming “THERE’S A FANSHOT! THERE’S A FANSHOT! WAHHHHHHHH! YOU’VE RUINED THE BOARD!”
It’s pathetic. It really is.

That's a pretty iffy distinction
This was a post without merit, just like many, many, many of the posts are without merit.
It’s hilarious that this crosses some sort of line for you. Brazenly mocking bad posts? Acceptable. Personal attacks on players? Encouraged. Pointing out that there’s already a post on this subject? Sir, you have gone too far.
Yes...
when all you have to say is, “FAN SHOT! FAN SHOT!” then it’s time to re-evaluate your life and really, your value as a human being.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
Because, much like you, there's no compelling reason for this post to exist
You can delete your fanposts after you post them. If there’s already a fanpost on the subject, why not just delete the diary?
I actually have more sympathy for the fanposts with awful ideas in them than I do for fanposts like this that should just have been deleted after the poster realized there was another post on the subject. At least those serve a purpose.
This post CLEARLY served a purpose
It gave you the opportunity to feel superior by pointing out there was already a FanShot.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
You're projecting.
I don’t need opportunities to feel superior, life gives me enough of those already.
Guy!
Relax….I cannot believe how much time some spend here arguing about whetehre a fanpost is appropriate. Who cares? If you don’t make this your life mission, someone else around here obviously will. Take a break from your duties protecting this world from people who are sensitive to re-posts.
I am sure you have a job or something you need to accomplish before you save everyone from the persecution and wrong doing here at BCB.

If nothing else
avoiding the inevitable row is a good reason not to have a fanshot and a fanpost.
It also seems like a good idea to me that whenever it’s breaking news and you want to be the first to get something out and so don’t plan to write much, making it a fanshot makes more sense. This seems especially true when we know that Al is likely to post something on the main page about new player acquisitions.
Alright, truth be told, I don’t care that much; I’ve just been reading too much British lit and wanted an excuse to use the word “row” in a sentence.

They say “as well” a lot as well
They also have different words for certain foods and they insert an “r” in between a word that ends in a vowel followed by a word that starts with a vowel, e.g., “Madonna ate shrimp” would come as “Madonner ate prawns”.

FWIW, I agree with ballhawk and Wreckard.
If one posts a Fanpost or Fanshot on a topic – especially a news item – that has already been covered, the repetitive Fanpost/Fanshot should be deleted by its creator. Doing so helps the site run more efficiently and, well, it’s just good etiquette. Is it a life or death? Are buildings going to collapse and rivers overflow if there are repetitive Fanposts/Fanshots present? Absolutely not. But, in the words of that great American sage Wilford Brimley, “It’s the right thing to do.” And, yeah, I have done it myself.

baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
Well, if they're posted "within minutes" of each other...
….one should still come up as earlier than the other. (Every Fanpost/Fanshot/comment has a time stamp.) If they’re both posted at the exact same time then, well, it would be nice if one of the two posters would acquiesce and take his or hers down. Any links provided therein could then simply be moved to the other post.

I haven’t followed other teams as closely this year as I have in other years, so I can’t really speak to the Phils’ need for SP. I do know the Cubs need to shore up the bullpen, and ages suggest that Ryan might have more left in the tank than Pedro.

Just the fact that they would sign Pedro tells you what state their pitching is in. It's
pretty bad. He’s really got no velocity left on his fastball. In the WBC, he was throwing nothing but junk. His fastball was topping out in the low to-mid 80’s so he had to throw changeups in the 70’s. He still knows how to pitch and get the average hitter out, but I have no idea how long he can go. His shoulder is held together with spit and bailing wire. I really don’t think he will give them much, but maybe they figured that a 1mil, it wasn’t a big deal.

And just curious BLou, have you ever stepped on a baseball diamond? What have you done in your “baseball career” to boast around here like some kind of know it all stud? If you have accomplished anything significant, maybe people around here might start respecting anything you might have to stay, although i doubt it..

What he did
or did not do in his baseball career has nothing to do with how much I respect him on this board. If Ernie Banks came on BCB was a complete jerk to people the way BLou is, I wouldn’t have any respect for him either.

BLou will surely tell you all about about his career at NIU.
But I concur with tomas21 below. Even if you do know a lot about baseball, if you’re a jerk people won’t respect you.
And not only that, playing collegiate baseball (or not) doesn’t make someone more knowledgeable. For example, Ronny Cedeno is a heck of a lot better at baseball than any of us ever will be. But I get the impression that he’s not exactly the greatest baseball mind in the world.

Very low risk move.....
tonight they said Ryan is going to AZ to work with minor league pitching instructor, then to AAA Iowa. Really gave no indication when, or if for that matter, when Ryan might be seen in Cubbie pinstripes.
I assume they will be paying Ryan a pro-rated major league minimum salary so there is very little risk in finding out if he can get a LH batter or two out in the 6th, 7th innings. Worse case scenario would be the Cubs giving Ryan his walking papers in a month or so if he shows he has nothing left.
Agreed
There is no serious downside to the move and a lot of potential upside

Worst case scenario, BJ Ryan continues to suck in Iowa and never steps foot onto Wrigley Field. Clearly a no risk move.
Best case scenario: BJ Ryan gets rejuvenated by stepping foot onto Wrigley Field and returns to his former self, dominating basically everyone.
He’ll almost surely wind up somewhere in the middle of those two. This is undoubtedly a low risk high reward type of signing. Hopefully it works just as well as 2008 Edmonds/Johnson in CF!
I’m going on record on day one of BJ Ryan’s Cubs career and saying that he will be lights out for us this year, and will play a significant role in the 2009 Cubs march towards the WS!

Speaking of pie...
Guy goes into a restaurant and orders himself up a nice pepperoni pizza pie. When it comes out, the server says “Sir, would you like me to cut this into eight slices or six?”
Guy says “Better make it six. I don’t think I could eat eight.”

decent move
decent move, but nothing to get REAL Excited about. He has been bad for a while, otherwise the Jays wouldn’t have eaten the last $15million of his contract. I will be a great payoff if he can ACTUALLY contribute come late august if we’re still in this thing.

I rec'd the original post
As a protest against Wreckard, Ballhawk, and everyone else who cluttered this thread with repeated comments about how there was already a fanshot on this topic. Seriously — we get it. Its a lot simpler and easier to follow when only one thread — fanpost or fanshot — exists on a particular issue. I would venture that most of us agree with you on that, and would support one or two comments re-directing people back to where that original discussion is occurring.
But, you didn’t leave it there. Instead, you got into a running fight on the issue, and the result is that for nearly 100 comments its very hard to see the few that are about the merits of the actual issue, rather than about where that debate should be occurring. Just settle down, please. Even if your point is valid, you undermine it with this many comments, as they are every bit as disruptive to a reasoned discussion as was the duplicative thread. And given the original poster’s perfectly reasonable explanation for why his post came 13 minutes after a fanshot, there was every reason to say your peace once and let it lie.
/climbs down from high horse. As for BJ Ryan, great if he can still pitch, not going to worry about it if he can’t since I assume he’ll just hang out in the minors until then.
