Julio Lugo was DFA'd today by Boston and presumably will have a few suitors, so will Hendry be in the mood for more dumpster diving?

I think that it could help solve the 2B

Once again maybe just maybe we can move one of the two SS to 2B and get some production

as a freebie

I’d see what he wanted to come in and maybe ponder it. I was against dealing anything for him, because you’d be basically getting another Theriot offensively. But as a freebie? Definitely open to it, although I’d guess that we won’t go looking.

Given the choice

would you rather give the playing time to Lugo or Baker?

PT or keeping on the roster?

Playing time, I’d probably give to Lugo over Baker, provided Lugo showed he could adjust to 2nd rapidly. Keeping on the roster? Probably Baker, who’s versatility could be useful, provided he can hit some. That said, Lugo could probably push Andres Blanco’s spot instead, so there might be a way for both, but I’m really not expecting it.

playing time -

and I think I’d rather see Baker given the chance to see if he’ll be a useful role player over the next couple years.

I like the line about "sunk cost"

I hope the Cubs organization is taking notes (cough Miles cough)

I've suggested this before

If someone isn’t worth warm spit to the team, and we have to eat the salary anyways, why not just DFA them, wish them luck, and send them packing.

miles has a cough?

that could limit his effectiveness in his rehab. :)

Why

Lugo is a bad defensive shortstop at this point and is reported to have been a real pain in the ass for Francona to deal with. We don’t need any more distractions, or craptastic infielders.

$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.

by BLou on Jul 17, 2009 12:37 PM CDT reply actions

REALLY???

Why is it EVERYTIME someone is dfa’d, released, one of us Cubs Fans thinks he is the answer to our needs. Don’t we have enough LIGHT hitting infielders? This guy can’t play defense…I would rather have Blanco as the utility 2b/ss or call up Darwin Barney. I get so tired of signing these aging players when their is potentially someone in the minors that could fit the same mold. ex…Signing Milton Bradley when we have a GLUT of RF such as Fox and Hoffpauir. Wouldn’t you have rather seen that platoon situation that what we’ve seen out of Bradley?

Hey, Hey! Hey, Hey! Hey, Hey!

Where did I say he was the answer to our needs?

Furthermore how does a need have an answer? He’s been a guy of note around here for a while, he use to play for Lou, so I thought it was somewhat pertinent.

You shouldn’t have to defend this fanshot. I am thinking of re-posting it, though, as a fanpost.

Well we'd been linked to him for years

And it wouldnt shock me at all if we wake up next week and he’s on the team

Fox & Hoff as RF?

Yes they can play RF but they aren’t the impact fielder the Cubs were hoping Bradely to be. Turns out Bradely did have an impact, maybe not the one the Cubs had hoped for.

The Cubs do not need Lugo

The Cubs don’t need more infield help. I wouldn’t even take Lugo to rid us of Aaron Miles.

I'd re-think that position

We’re talking about Miles here. The Nefi Perez of 2009.

Nefi Perez

isn’t the Nefi Perez of 2009?

You do know that

Nefi monitors this website, looking for his next fight! Better be careful and don’t tick off Nefi or he will hit a slow roller straight at you!

What's the sudden fascination with reclamation projects?

I understand BJ Ryan, he serves and immediate need if it works out, and if it doesn’t, we still have a lefty… but Lugo… seriously? I don’t think we’re going to be catching lightning in a bottle with him… DeRosa, Edmunds, maybe BJ Ryan… but Lugo is a serious stretch.

As far as a defensive replacement at SS/2B… we already have that in Blanco, so why add another liability?

by lswaidz on Jul 17, 2009 1:25 PM CDT reply actions

a few reasons

1) We were without meaningful baseball for a few days
2) There’s no money for a big acquisition
3) Cubs fans like to micro-analyze EVERYTHING.

Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

by drewishdrewid on Jul 17, 2009 1:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't use Lugo as a defensive replacement

I think people are looking more at his offensive output/potential versus the poo-poo platter that the Cubs have trotted out at 2B this year.

If a Lugo/Fontenot platoon could work, would it be better than Baker/Fontenot? And then Blanco could still be used defensively.

some players

don’t do well in Boston or New York, Theriot should be at second base …this is worth a shot…..we are not getting anything out of 2nd anyhow…..I believe Soriano should go back there and get the bat of Hoffpauir or Fox in left

by zeus 73 on Jul 17, 2009 2:54 PM CDT reply actions

So, Theriot and Soriano should both play second base, then?

Riot can make the plays

and gently toss them to Soriano, who will RIFLE them to Lee at first.

Theriot at second

when you mention it also?
