Julio Lugo DFA'D
Anyone think Julio Lugo is worth a shot? He's a natural SS and would allow Theriot to move to 2B. He's hitting .285 with a .350 obp. Like the BJ Ryan deal, I think it's certainly worth a shot. He's got some baggage but IMO he's an upgrade........he effectively would replace Fontenot/Baker in the lineup. I'm still trying to get to seventy five words here. Julio Lugo Julio Lugo......go Cubs Go!

What sort of baggage?
I know Red Sox wanted to get rid of him but other than I guess attitude, what’s the reason?

Lugo > Miles
Upgrade when you can in my opinion
Blanco > Miles
Fontenot > Miles
Baker > Miles
We’ve already done this.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
The real question
Is Lugo > Blanco or Fontenot?
Apparently, the Cubs are interested in finding out – http://news.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view.bg?articleid=1185570

Well ...
we already have a bunch of overpriced veterans locked up for 2010. What’s one more?
In all seriousness, the Cubs SHOULD NOT get Lugo unless the Red Sox take Soriano or Bradley in exchange.
"in all seriousness"???
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.
by drewishdrewid on Jul 17, 2009 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions
The statement in itself is an Oxymoron
You start out by saying “In all seriousness” and then proceed to stat something that was completely not serious “unless the Red Sox take Soriano or Bradley in exchange”.
I was just poking fun at Drew’s grammer policing
The sun will shine in '69
I was not being "completely not serious"
I might have been exaggerating. But why in the hell would we take on Lugo’s contract unless we unload one of OUR bad deals?
Either way, even if Boston pays most of Lugo’s salary, I still don’t see why the Cubs would do this.
what contract?
if he clears waivers, we can sign him for league min?

I wasn't grammar policing
I’m trying to figure out how someone equates Lugo with Soriano or Bradley.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.
by drewishdrewid on Jul 17, 2009 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm equating bad contracts
And making a point that there’s no reason to acquire Lugo and his contract unless the Cubs can also unload a bad contract. Do the Red Sox want Aaron Miles?
Don't you know?.
Soriano and Bradley are “Bad”.. end of debate and story – they’re over the hill, at the end of their usefulness, overpaid, etc, etc ad nasuem. But Lugo… he’s a nice new shiny object..OOOohhh…..
by DisCUBbobulated on Jul 17, 2009 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions
yeah ... that's what I saw saying
Oh, wait — I also said this:
Either way, even if Boston pays most of Lugo’s salary, I still don’t see why the Cubs would do this.
I apologize for the confusion..
I wasn’t actually responding to what you were saying – DD’s comment brought up the whole Soriano/Bradley question and I was responding directly to that. I do see that you are not defending Lugo. Incidently, I think the cubs are very serious about taking a flyer on him.
by DisCUBbobulated on Jul 17, 2009 5:32 PM CDT up reply actions
Oh, and please, please ...
defend Soriano’s contract. This should be hilarious.
Here..
This is his only bad year in the last 7
Carreer OPS of .838 which was more like 900 at the time he signed his contract. That same year, 41 SB’s in 2007 along with 46 HR’s and 96 RBI’s from the leadoff spot. Nothing to indicate he had lost anything – in fact, up to that point he looked like he was peaking, and he’d been kicking ass fairly consistently since 2002.
You want bad contracts?
Soriano is a good baseball player who’s having a bad year so far. Go ahead and guillotine me for this, but I believe he will be a big factor for this team’s ability to win before the year’s out. For the year’s to come, yes I agree it was a risk to pay him big money long-term ($18 million 2010-2014), but I think the verdict’s still out on whether him joining the Cubs was mistake – at least from my perspective.
by DisCUBbobulated on Jul 17, 2009 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't see what's hard to understand about what I said ...
Why should we trade for Lugo (and his contract) unless we unload a bad contract of our own?
sure ...
But DFAing usually indicates that the team wants to trade a player, not put him on waivers.
Did Boston say they would eat his salary? If so, I apologize. But I still don’t think we need him.
If they don't trade him
they are going to waive him. We could probably trade a roster filler prospect for him and have Boston pick up his salary.
Or we could wait for the waiver process, and hope nobody else claims him (which they probably will, since he’s a better option than BJ Ryan, imo)
DEJESUS!!!
More craptastic veteran crap on a roster already over-polluted with such
A BIG no thanks to Julio Lugo.
$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.
The Cubs have already inquired about Lugo
He’s got $13.5m remaining on his deal, so if the BoSox deal him, they’re gonna eat most of that.

.
we're just assuming that Boston will eat most of the deal, right?
I’ve seen a lot of guessing on that point, but nothing stated from a primary source.
They're going to have to in order to strike a deal.
Because in 10 days, teams can choose to not “deal” with them at all, and claim him for league minimum, while they pay out the rest of the contract.
At any rate… we don’t need another underperforming middle infielder. Our roster has been littered with them all year long.

or the Cubs and Red Sox
could exchange bad contracts …
Yeah... but...
Miles is making a fraction of what Lugo is making. And, Lugo, despite a decent batting average, has looked every bit as bad as Miles in the field, according to commentary from BoSox fans.
I hate to utter these curse words, but… Brian Roberts. If you’re gonna deal for a middle infielder, put those talks back on the table.

you're probably right
I hope Hendry stays away from Lugo, frankly.
He'd just be another guy going through the revolving door.
Miles, Freel, Baker… etc. Good job Jim, way to assemble a crap-tastic middle infield.

He's being released
Of course they’re eating his salary.
Not to mention that they’ve said that they’re willing to eat most of his salary to get rid of him.
Not saying he's great
but………..is he an improvement to the revolving door of Fontenots, Freels, Bakers, Blancos, etc., etc
If he’s cheap enough I don’t see how it could hurt
Seriously
There’s reasons people get DFA’d.
Why is there a post and question “should we sign him? yeah buy low” to every DFA?
A team full of DFA’s won’t win you games. Sorry.

The thought of acquiring Lugo
brings back fond memories of other well traveled middle infielders that Jim Hendry is fond of getting. Who can forget Womack, Hairston, Bynum, and my personal favorite Neifi. The flashbacks are moments made in heaven.
Thanks, Jim.
If you like Selig's handling of the steroid issue, you'll love his choice for next Cub owner.
I can't imagine why people are so excited about this guy.
Unlike the Blue Jays, who have in the past released players who are useful, the Red Sox usually know what they’re doing. If they don’t want Lugo, there must be something seriously wrong with him.
Note that he has a .367 slugging percentage. Andres Blanco has a .310 SLG. We have someone almost as good who costs way less and has less baggage.
No thanks.

Julio Lugo
is much closer to Ryan Theriot in capability than Andres Blanco. The Sox are dumping him because they are committed to Lowrie.

Lugo's contract
Is really bad. 4 years $36M. Makes Miles look like a steal.
After 10 days, if released by the Bosox, he can be had for the major league minimum. The question is, is he better or worse than what we have now.
Here’s a thought, what about trading Miles for Lugo, but we keep the terms of their current contracts. i.e. we get Lugo at Miles’ contract rate.
But can you trade someone on the DL?

No, but you can activate someone and trade him.
That’s how the Cubs got Jeff Baker.

Looks like the Mets are getting Lugo, who the next light hitting, slick fielding SS the groups here, me include, say we should get to displace either our current SS or 2B
