Please, Please fire Aaron Heilman...
into space so we never have to see him again.
starts off the 8th, gives up a hit and 2 walks to load the bases. enters with bases empty and no outs, leaves with bases loaded and one out. what is it with Lou sticking with veteran relievers who are just miserable (see the useless Bob Howry)
if my updated season stats for AH are correct: 43 IP, 42 H, 22/21 R/ER, 29 BB, 4.40 ERA

Not that I think Heilman had a good outing
but Guzman, Marmol and Marshall had already been used. Did you want to turn the game over to the Shark? Perhaps Wells should have been left in another inning.
Perhaps BJ Ryan will be able to get us out of bullpen purgatory.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.
How about putting a competent pitcher in his roster spot?
So you could use Guzman, Marmol, and Marshall, and have another reliable guy to turn to.
Am I talking crazy?
by definition
relief pitchers are unreliable. That’s why they’re relief pitchers. Remember, Heilman has sometimes stunk up the place, and sometimes he comes out an dominates. Unfortunately, it’s more the former then the latter, but the latter does happen.
Who would you get instead?
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

We got him.
As far as I know, he’s pitched once since his call-up. I don’t know enough about him to say definitively whether or not he would have been better than Heilman.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

i dont know how good he is either
but its kind of pointless to have him sit in the bullpen unless theres a blowout

every bullpen
has the guy who barely pitches. Stevens threw to the backstop at least twice during his inning.

i know every bullpen has a guy that rides pine
but if you have a guy like heilman who meltsdown every other start heilman shouldnt be brought out in close games

maybe he shouldn't.
but I would rather have Heilman in a close game then Shark right now.

not sure who's out there and available...
I am hoping (and believing) BJ Ryan can come in and have a Jim Edmonds type impact for the ’pen.
but Heilman’s ERA dipped below 4.50 ONCE (4.15) during the month of May. June saw the ERA dip below 4.0 a couple of times but 2 BS and 13 H in 9 games he entered. and so far in July: 8.1 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, and 6 BB
he can (& does) get out of trouble, but it’s almost always the trouble he creates for himself.
problem was
Guzman couldn’t get through the 6th, Marshall can’t finish the 7th, Marmol does his usual high wire act, leaving Heilman for the 8th. If Lou had brought in Shark or Stevens and we lose he gets vilified by all of us

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
Well its on Jimbo again
I guess he didnt hear the collective laughter of millions of Mets fans when that deal went down, not to mention the relief of Mariners fans everywhere
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
Slight improvement
Heilman’s numbers are still slightly better this season than they were last season. That’s not saying much and he’ll probably be among the 2009 Cubs that aren’t members of the 2010 Cubs.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
hey all
he got credit for a Hold tonight.
BwaaaaHaaaHaaaa
his blown saves...
… are getting nervous because the gap has widened to 2
Don't worry about the pen

pitches right handed...
… as he recovers from Tommy Johns Surgery and is lights out! yes, i’m feeling it, yes!
Soriano could not field a ball
Heilman should not have been in that situation. He was lights out yesterday. You could a lot worse.

I'd rather have had Shark or Stevens in that situation.
And I man that.

Sorry Lou doesn't trust them
Stevens will be gone today. Shark will be used by default now that Lou has blown out everyone else. Thanks again for using Gregg on Thursday.

Actually, Jessica...
… rumor has it your boy Sam might be the one gone today. They need the extra bullpen arm, unfortunately.

what's a fan to do
IMO, if Lou continues using the same 5 bullpen guys, by the end of the season they will be worn out and ineffective, assuming they are in a position, to make a run at the playoffs. Lou needs to get Stevens and Shark acclimated into a regular routine so that they are ready to pitch every few days. Sitting around for 10 days is just as corrosive as pitching every day. I didn’t see Stevens and Shark pitch today, but obviously they got the job done.
no way
Shark woulda given up the long ball.

Soriano did not get a ball hit his way the entire time heilman was in there.
So how did Soriano hurt Heilman? Aaron Heilman hur Aaron Heilman by falling behind, nibblig and walking people. Now Milton had an error on a base hit that gave a base runner third base. But I am not even sure that was a big deal cuz Heillman walked the next guy to load the bases.

I've gotten into the habit of walking away when Heilman
comes in.
He drives me nuts. Can’t believe we traded for him on purpose.
Heck
It was for Onedec. Useless for useless.

It would have been better had it been an accident? :)
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
i thought it was for
detroit hall of famer harry heilmann?
We all have a few "whoops" on our resume
I could forgive that…
Well, maybe not. But persuiing him even after the Mets (who were desperate for pen help) cast him off…
I'd rather have Howry
And I said that when we were rumored to trade for Heilman when he was on the Mets.
Another example of why
well-thought out fanposts get bumped off the page too early. Yes, we saw the game. Thank you for enlighting us with statistics from Saturday’s game, even though you don’t really identify them. You just assume we know what you are talking about. Try going to this post a month from now and see if you can identify the game.
Yes, we remember Bob Howry. He wasn’t very good.
Thanks for placing everything in context. Yes, you don’t like Aaron Heilman. Neither do I.

Howry has found benefits in the change of scenery
His ERA is down almost two full runs, his WHIP is down and his ERA plus is up. I honestly think Howry had a bad year last year and going to San Francisco was just what the doctor ordered. I’d rather have Howry over Heilman, but it was clear that Howry was going to get run out of Chicago after the season he had. I was actually supportive of the move, but I was far from supportive of getting Aaron Heilman in the trade with Seattle. I was even less supportive of getting Kevin Gregg, but Gregg has turned out to be a reliable closer.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
Calling Jim Hendry................................
As I posted before……………….PLEASE GO GET ANOTHER BULLPEN ARM!! It is our most glaring need. Preferably it would be someone with an awareness that throwing strikes is a GOOD thing!
do you know of any teams?
fixing to let go of a pen arm that will
a. not cost much in prospects
b. be financially inexpensive
and c. have an ERA of under four from now until October.
if so, then i’m with ya’.
There has to be someone at Iowa who's better.
Hey, when Dempster comes back, keep Hart as a reliever.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Ascanio?
He did pretty well while he was up here earlier in the year. But Lou seems to love Heilman, so he would never do that.

Hart is no cupcake either when it comes to Walks.
But it looks that in terms of pure stuff Hart has better stuff than heilman. I remember how good Hart looked when he came up two years ago. I really liked his arm. But his last two years he has taken steps backward. Not challenging hitters enough and too many walks. Lets hope that is not the case today.
by MandMexpress12 on Jul 19, 2009 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions
Anyone else notice that our bullpen has done a great job the past two months?
We currently have the 6th best* bullpen in the NL, better than we finished last year* . . . so I would say the need isn’t so glaring like it was earlier. A tweak (like BJ Ryan) and Lou using his relievers more intelligently may be all we really need to be one of the best.
ERA is misleading
The bullpen has been lucky for the last 2 months…not all good.
We’ve walked a lot, gotten hits but gotten out of the innings from defense or just bad hitting.
Prime example, look at last night.
you make
your own luck.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

All in favor say I..."I"
I said that when they picked him up, but he was still and upgrade compared to Bob Howry. And like others said we really didn’t have another choice to put in during the 8th.
Heilman an upgrade over Howry?
Howry only gave up three more (you can count them) home runs than Heilman in 2008. Heilman’s WHIP was higher than Howry’s despite the slight edge Heilman had in ERA. Heilman’s WHIP has actually increased this season, which is no surprise given what we’ve seen. You know what the ER difference between Howry and Heilman was in 2008? Heilman had two more earned runs than Howry in 2008. Saying Heilman was an upgrade over Howry is simply false and only flies because we had to deal with Howry and not Heilman last season. They both had bad 2008 seasons and I’d say they were pretty comparable. That doesn’t make Heilman an upgrade.
And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.
brian custer, we await your retort.

without getting totally sabre about it
or letting my personal bias towards the guy get in the way’ i’ll just say aaron is walking too many batters, he seems to have solved the gopher ball problem he has\d w/the mets and exchanged it for timidity for the strike zone.
when aaron pounds the zone low & hard, he can be near untouchable. he gets timid & nibbles he pays the price.
someone in cubs’ mgt ought to remind aaron of this. he seemed to response well after an early season lambasting by lou…
by brian custer on Jul 20, 2009 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions
Fair enough.
The base on balls has definitely been his undoing. The only bright side I can see for Heilman is that, if Aaron really is the Bob Howry of ’09, Lou will give him plenty of chances to pitch out of it.
