Baker
Nothing like Freel, different type of players. Freel can play anywhere on the diamond. While Baker plays 1b/2b/3b and will show occasional power and hit 12 home runs two years ago. Freel is the line drive guy who can steal some bases and play very good defense.

Depending how he is defensively...
…he appears to be, at best, an upgrade over Aaron Miles – assuming the Cubs are dumping Miles to begin with, that is. It’s certainly not thrilling that he’s been on the 60-day DL for most of the season.

That's good news.
I’ll confess to not being particularly familiar with him. He’s looking like he could be our infield Reed Johnson, which certainly isn’t a bad thing. I’m just wondering what this will mean for Fox and Blanco. I’d really like to hear that Miles is on his way out the door.

There's a very good chance you nailed it -
that Baker is the infield version of Reed Johnson, including the frustrating yearly DL stints.
There’s a chance, also, that he’s injured enough that we remember him as Ryan Freel II, if we remember him at all.
But there’s one more chance that his career takes off with the Cubs, and we see him playing well against RHP, too.

Baker = Blah
Are we trying to hoard all the injured mediocre infielders around the league? We already have Miles and Freel, Fontenot has been a disappointment no doubt, but why not do something a little more bold. Atlanta has a lefty hitting second baseman also having an off season. Maybe a Fontenot for Kelly Johnson swap would be a good change of scenery trade for both players.

Assets
Has the power to knock the ball out from pole to pole, while maintaining a consistent bat. Can come off the bench and deliver key hits.
Flaws
Injuries hampered him throughout his minor-league career. Could stand to cut down on his strikeouts. Struggles on defense in the infield and outfield.
Career potential

Yes, he seems like a good candidate for RH platoon at 2B
with Fontenot, after Ramirez comes back. Plus, he’s been in the minor leagues on a rehab assignment. He’s apparently ready to play now. And he just turned 28.
I’m assuming the Cubs won’t be giving up much for him. And, if so, he’s a lot better option than Scales, Freel, or Blanco (though I like Andres as the backup SS).
On the other hand, let me just say that I am astounded at how capable Jake Fox has been at third base. I hope he continues to be used there when Ramirez needs a rest.

Baker's UZR's
Baker has played 1B, 2B, 3B, LF, RF. He was surprisingly just below average last year at 2B, similar to where he was at 3B. In the OF, it’s been mixed bag, averaging out at slightly above average. So, defensively, he comes across as very similar to DeRosa’s ability.

If you take a look
at Baker’s splits, both by career years, and by his 2008 season, you can see a guy who had flashes of absolute brilliance, and some months of utter horrible suckitude. So, there’s potential here, especially when given an opportunity on another team. On the Rox, he was blocked by all sorts of players. On the Cubs, he should have a definite role as a guy playing against all LHers and giving rests to players all around the diamond.
This is really put-up-or-shut-up time for the DeRomantics. They kept saying, “It’s not Mark personally, it’s that we need this type of player.” I have been saying, “We can get that type of player for a whole lot less in trade if we don’t trade for the DeRosa name.” Now we have a player who is a good bet to approximate the value we would have gotten from DeRosa (especially if we had kept trying to give playing time to the LHers), a player with upside DeRosa didn’t have. This move should be universally hailed as brilliant by Jim Hendry, given the denouncing and decrying he has received for “failing” to get DeRosa. We’ll see.

You're right... we need this type of player
But a proven commodity like DeRosa versus a guy who has an injury history AND whose meager stats are suspect because of Coors Field is still a question.
There’s also the small question of who we gave up for him.
I hope it works. I hope he makes DeRosa obsolete.
But forgive me if I don’t automatically see this as “brilliant!”
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
by Worf on Jul 2, 2009 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I only say it should be seen as "brilliant"
by the same people who decried the DeRosa non-move as “utter failure” and I haven’t kept tabs to remember whether you were one of them or not.
But DeRosa was going to cost two good pitchers and 3 M, then be gone. Baker started the year with 2.049 service time and is making the league minimum. I expect that since he was eligible to come off the 60-day DL and the initial trade report doesn’t mention what goes back to the Rox, that we haven’t given up much.
Pre-season, Baker was projected to hit .269/.333/.456 by CHONE. The same projection foresaw .275/.358/.432 for DeRosa. Granted, there’s park effects to factor into that, but these are awfully comparable players, when you factor in age and contract.
Randy Wells - You continue to astound me.

Let me be clear.
I don’t think this trade is “brilliant” any more than I thought the DeRosa non-move was an “abject failure.” But there were people who thought not getting DeRosa was a miserable mistake, without considering the cost.
I will wait to make a full analysis of the trade until we know more about both the cost and Baker’s readiness to play.

And death is not an option.

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand
by N Oakley on Jul 2, 2009 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
If I understand what you're asking -
the question is, let’s say we’re trading Sean Marshall and Jose Ascanio either way, would I prefer to receive Mark DeRosa or Jeff Baker? Well, I’d rather receive Mark DeRosa, especially because a trade like that means I’m selling future strength for this year. Mark DeRosa is a safer bet for production this year.
But I don’t think that question gets at the real comparison here. The Rox don’t want to take playing time away from Ian Stewart and Clint Barmes and Garret Atkins, so they really have no role for Baker right now. So, we’re probably getting him on the cheap. In fact, it’s out now. We traded Alberto Alburquerque.
In this case, I’d rather have the future years of Baker, keeping Marshall and Ascanio.
Randy Wells - You continue to astound me.

2009: 1-2 record, 32.1 IP, 4.18 ERA, 1.423 WHIP, 38 H, 8 BB, 21 K
If he wants to go to Iowa with no promise of the promotion in 2009, then I’d sign him. He has loads to prove again and does not deserve a major league contract before he shows that he can get the WHIP down and proves that he wants to focus on the here and now. Still, that would not be a move that solves any of the immediate Cub issues.

The article on mlb.com
says he’s flying to Chicago:
“I haven’t talked with [Cubs manager] Lou Piniella, but I did talk with Jim Hendry last night,” said Baker as he headed to a flight Thursday morning so he could join the Cubs for their game against the Brewers at Wrigley Field on Thursday night. “I’m excited for the opportunity. I don’t know what their plans are for me yet, so I’m looking forward to getting there.”

My mistake.
I could have sworn he was out.

Agreed on the platoon, and it provides the depth at third lacking on this roster.
Fox is okay and has the bat, but makes me nervous as the best alternative.
if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

Kind of wierd
to get your 3rd base depth after Aramis is due to come back next week after a month or two off, and after Fox has stepped in as a capable (if unspectacular) alternative.
Kind of like when we traded for that crappy has-been 1st baseman (can’t remember the name) to fill in for Lee after we were already out of the race.

Well, in this case,
Baker wasn’t going to be ready to play until now. So maybe Hendry has been watching him for a while and he’s taken too long. Baker can also help the team in the OF corners while RJ is out.

good point
they really need someone that can spell Fukudome against lefties. And Bradley. If he has really great range, can we bat him twice and have him play center-right?

Rox fan here.
Can any of you give us a heads up on information about Albuerquerque? There’s not a lot of info on the guy’s skillset, short of his career stats in your system.
What time of pitcher is he? What sort of injury did he have that led to him missing last year?
by WolfMarauder on Jul 2, 2009 11:48 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
If you search BCB
you don’t find much on A.A. It was an arm injury in ‘08 and he’s said to have a “live arm.” Wish we knew more, but the not knowing, in a system that isn’t known for it’s depth to begin with, should tell you something. Sorry.

I was pretty excited about this move
until I saw his home/away OPS splits.
Career:
Home .898
Away .601
2008:
Home .901
Away .647
by paulucla on Jul 2, 2009 12:02 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Just for comparison
Aaron Miles career OPS is .683 and last year was .753.
by paulucla on Jul 2, 2009 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
OTOH, he does
have a career .902 OPS against LHP, the problem being of course I don’t know how that breaks down home/away. I would like to see his career OPS against LHP away from Coors Field.
At any rate, it looks like a marginally okay move if they are finding a way to dump Miles and are going to platoon Baker with Fontenot and get Fontenot’s career OPS of .589 against lefties out of the lineup.
by paulucla on Jul 2, 2009 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn't take the home/away splits too far.
Yes, Coors is a better place to hit than many parks, but it isn’t as extreme as it once was and a lot of hitters do better at home v. away, regardless of park effects.

a .250 difference in OPS?
that’s a bit more than just beign homesick. I know you are a fan of the move, but that’s a pretty striking stat.

Reed Johnson had similar big gaps
in his home/away numbers in Toronto in 2006. But not so much in other years and he’s been fine as a Cub. A .250 difference is so large, it becomes meaningless to me, especially with a player like Baker whose career has been fits and starts in Colorado.

A couple more comments
First, the Cubs apparently DFA’d Ryan Freel to make room for Baker. Fine with me.
Second, I haven’t weighed in on all the DeRosa chatter all year long, but I want to mention one thing. He missed some time last year with migraines, which had been a problem for him his whole career. Some of the episodes were scary, with the Cubs unsure whether Mark would miss a day or a week. I wouldn’t be surprised if one small part of Hendry’s decision to deal him was that Jim wasn’t absolutely sure DeRosa would be able to play another whole year. However, the trade made possible the acquisition of Bradley, who was nearly guaranteed to miss more time. And now, the eventual replacement is Baker, who has been plagued by as many injuries in his career as DeRosa had in his early years. If I’ve learned one thing from playing fantasy baseball (and that’s dubious), it’s that injuries play a MUCH bigger role in roster construction and team success than I ever knew. My main hope for Baker is that he stay HEALTHY, and then good things will happen.

That's a good point about DeRo.
Remember when he suffered “temporary blindness”? And of course there was the heart thing, though I believe that was taken care of. He certainly had his fair share of injury concerns.

Didn't DeRosa have heart surgery last year?

overall, it's a fine gamble
I’m not huge on Baker, but I like him enough. He’s been blocked a bit in Colorado. The DeRosa comparisons are fair, but Baker has more ability, if he puts it together. At worst, he gives Lou some flexibility with his lineup, as he could probably stick Baker into RF if need be, while working him at 2nd in a platoon and as the backup 3rd and first baseman.
At the end of the day, all we gave up was the smallish Alberto Alburquerque. I don’t want to diminish Alburquerque’s talent. In response to the Rockies fan above, Alburquerque is a smallish righty with good life on his fastball (clocked in the low-mid 90’s), with a solid slider (I think), and a decent change. It’s a decent talent to get in return for Baker, particularly if there is a roster jam and the Rockies wanted to clear Baker. Al has also sharpened things up this year, showing better command and improved stuff. I’d like to see him tried as a starter.
That said, Alburquerque wasn’t high in our system, IMO. Should he have gotten more consideration? Perhaps, but it’s not a huge loss. To give up a guy like that for Baker is fine by me.

Baker
has more ability than DeRosa. Whoa. I’m going to sit down for a minute while I contemplate this Baker fellow. Is he 8 feet tall?
DEJESUS!!!
by tomas21 on Jul 2, 2009 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yes
8 feet tall and weighs 300 pounds. giant of a man.
That said, I was being serious when I said that. Physically, I think Baker is more talented than DeRosa, but he hasn’t put it together, and maybe he won’t. This isn’t a knock on DeRosa, as it was awesome to have him here.

when i heard baker traded to cubs i thought uh oh. its not dusty.whewwwwww. this is not much better though. these are the kind of players you get when you dont have an owner. jim is signing and releasing players like crazy this year. any one know how many players we have on the books that are not with the team anymore?

Gaudin and Vizcainio are the only ones, I think. Gathright was traded, and Baltimore is paying for Freel.
