Goldstein on Cubs farm system the past few years
He rips on them for both their drafting and developing. Criticizes the org for not emphasizing plate discipline and for giving over-slot bonuses to guys who didn't deserve it. Did say that Harvey and Pawelek were not over-drafts, but Colvin certainly was and we shouldn't have given Shark anything close to $10 mil. Says there is a light at the end of the tunnel with Vitters and some of the pacific rim prospects.

i think the last two
drafts have been reasonably good. for too long we were drafting pitching top-heavy, which leads to flop-heavy, to make up for a lack of arms in the system. we look solid up the middle in the low minors. and (for now) we’re plus-3 on PTBNL on the way.
we also may have closer to 40 legit candidates for the 40 man roster.
i’ve been critical of drafting before, but it’s getting better. not drinking blue kool-aid, but if new management commits to drafting/developing over paying large contracts to aging vets, we might be okay.

Agreed on 07 and 08
Though I didn’t like Cashner, they made some excellent mid round picks with Carpenter and Jackson. And Cashner is pitching really well too. This could turn out to be an excellent draft.
07 looks to be alright, I just wish we still had Josh Donaldson. I really liked his bat. Vitters should be a stud.
I feel they took a big step back with this years draft. Jackson was a fairly logical choice given what was left, but LaMaheiu was an awful pick and there was nothing in the mid rounds that looks impressive. Time will tell.

That's Goldstein's way of saying that Jeff Samardizija is nothing to write home about
We basically have huge signing bonus to a Jon Leicester or Kevin Hart type in Spellcheck.
$136 million payroll for a .500 style ballclub. Good work Jim.

I guess we can hope that his celebrity status
causes more t-shirts and jerseys to be sold to make up some of that money.

It's the Notre Dame thing.
I’m certain that if AJ Pollock were around, we would have thrown cash at him this year.
That also explains the dogged multi-year pursuit of Aaron Heilman. And drafting Grant Johnson.
Has Hendry continued to go after Maineri guys now that he’s at LSU?
