top 20 players of all time

I'm bored and have a day off work, and would like to discuss something other than Soriano's swing, and who we might trade for.  So I would like to know who people think the top players are who have ever played.

20.) Alberta Pujols- probably should not be on this list yet, but will clearly be in the top 10 by the time he retires.

19.) Mike Schmidt- The greatest third baseman of all time.  He might be on this list just  because I watched him cream the cubs game after game.

18.) Rogers Hornsby- A .400 hitter out of your second baseman!

17.) Roger Clemons- I hate Clemons, But he was a 350 game winner with a incredibly low era in one of the best hitting eras in baseball.  He edged Maddux in my opinion by a very slim margin.

16.) Joe Morgan- I think he is an idiot too, but he was a stud on the field.

15.) Tom Seaver- If he didn't play his career with the hapless Mets he might have one 400 games.  Argueably the greatest pitcher of all time

14.) Henry Aaron-  One of only 4 players to have 3000 hits and 500 homeruns. Seems underrated in my opinion, and I am probably putting him to low on this list.

13.) Tris Speaker-  The Red Sox traded away Smokey Joe Wood, Ruth, and Speaker in a three year period!

12.) A-rod- 100% bullshit as a person but unbelievable on the field.  I really hate putting him on this list.

11.) Stan Musial- 100% Baseball 0% bullshit.  1,815 hits on the road 1815 hits at home.  Model of consistency?

10.) Walter Johnson-   Faster than Nolan Ryan?

9.) Lefty Grove- Yes I put him ahead of Johnson.  I think Johnson was a product of his time.  He did not throw anything but a fastball in an era of mostly junk ball pitchers.  I believe If Johnson played in any later generation his mystique would not be as magnificent.

8.) Joe Dimaggio- Great definsely, and Offensively.  His stats were destroyed by three years in the war during his prime.

7.) Mickey Mantle- If he was sober and did not have osteomytosis he might have been the greatest hitter of all time.

6.) Ted Williams- The most screwed player in baseball history.  4.5 years in the war, and clearly dicked out of M.V.P

awards.

5.)Ty Cobb- When we think of Cobb we think of his basehits and racism.  He was the best baserunner in his era, a remarkable center fielder, and had almost as many r.b.i. as Ruth.

4.) Honus Wagner- I always wonder what He would look like in a modern day uniform running bull legged around the bases.

3.) Willie Mays- Remember he played through the 60's the hardest era in modern baseball to be a hitter.

2.) Babe Ruth- Nuf Ced

1.) Barry Bonds- It is clear Steroids is not an issue in this post, or bonds would not be number one.  He was a better fielder than Ruth, and a faster player on the basepaths.  Ruth though was much better than people think.  Bonds has more Home runs, walks and runs scored.  He was also clearly on a much worse team

P.S.  Sorry no cubs on this list.  I also want to add that I am aware there is no Negro League players on this list.  The stats are to skewed to give them an honest assesment.  Gibson, Paige, and Charleston would be on this list.

Morgan? A-Rod? Bonds?

What is this, the list of guys I want to fight?

I think I could take Joe. The others, maybe not.

let us start with NO FRIGGIN CHEATERS PERIOD, then

1) Babe Ruth——unquestionably

2) Willie Mays the true 5-tool player

eliminate Clemens, Bonds, Rodriguez, Pujols and discuss other players like Sandburg, Gibson, Maddux, Bench, Banks, Koufax,

Wow BLou...

you just eliminate Pujols without a single shred of evidence.

Ryne Sandberg is not in the top 20 all-time MLB.

Bonds

obviously I don’t think he is the best because of steroids. Prior to his steroid use, he had hall of fame numbers. Who knows how the rest of his career would have played out steroid free.

I think Babe Ruth was the best player to play simply because he could pitch and hit and redefined the game of baseball.

I think Ted Williams was the best overall hitter and best lefty to play the game.

I strongly believe that Pujols will go down as the best righty to play the game of baseball, but I doubt he will be able to keep pace with William’s OBP, SLG and OPS numbers.

I don't actually see why you guys found this post so offensive....

Sometimes this board seems it’s made up with those Philly fans who booed Santa Claus

I’m not sure I’d put Bonds ahead of Ruth. Ruth’s ability to play nearly every position and his relative superiority to everyone he played against count in his favor. That said, it’s hard I think to overstate just how good Barry Bonds was.

I also probably would have put Johnson as the best pitcher; and I don’t know that I’ve have Schmidt on the list, though he was obviously extremely good…

Fun thought game though.

I actually just realized that...

those posts were only from a couple people. So it wasn’t quite the wave of disdain that I thought at first. :)

That said, I still stand by my Philly fan comment for the site generally. :)

I’ll start
Clemons over Gibson, and Koufax.
Grove over Johnson?

by Notsnud on Jul 21, 2009 7:17 PM CDT reply actions

yeah, Koufax would be on any list of best players IMO.

also, I would put Frank Robinson over Tris Speaker.

What about Junior Griffey? His prime years were so dominant.

List full of non-sense. Bonds the #1 seriously? Pujlos “shouldn’t even on the list?” Aaron below A-Rod?

I don't know why I am defending this

But he stated pujols should not be on the list yet, but will probably be in the top ten. At this point in his career arod has better offensive stars than anyone in baseball history except Williams and ruth, and is a better defensive player at a harder position than Musial or Aaron. A recent book by elliot “mr stats” Kalb had Bonds over Ruth and Bill James had him #16 in 1999, so this poster isn’t the only person who has this opinion. I would put Ruth 1.

by Notsnud on Jul 21, 2009 10:18 PM CDT reply actions

I know it's early in his career

but don’t you think Ryan Theriot deserved consideration for one of the bottom spots on the list? Or at least an honorable mention? I mean, if you project his numbers forward for 20 years, he could easily hold records in OBP, multi-hit games, or CS, right?

I might put Frank Robinson on the list instead of Mickey Mantle. Other than that, I don’t have any disagreements.

Roger Clemens? Seriously?

Sorry but the win total is forever tainted by the stench of steroids.

Barry Frickin’ Bonds? Another cheater as #1?

And no Koufax, no Warren Spahn, no Maddux, etc.?

Hank Aaron #14? Mantle #7 based on what he might’ve accomplished if he hadn’t been a drunk?

God, I have a headache now. How about no more lists for like forever?

Ryan

Nolan Ryan, that is. More strikeouts than anyone ever, and seven no-hitters! I am surprised that he was not unanimously elected to the Hall of Fame.
