No story, just the box score. Only the 16th perfect game in modern baseball history. I know he is a member of the dreaded White Sox, but congratulations to him and his achievement. It was great to see it for the last inning on ESPN.

Beat me by 10 seconds. Oh well.

Congrats to Buehrle. Awesome to see it happen on TV…. never thought I’d see one.

Congrats to #56

he has always been a good pitcher, and never has done anything to really get under my skin.

Buehrle better take Wise out to the nicest restaurant in Tampa.

A good foot over the wall

crashes back into the wall, falling to the ground, the ball pops out of the glove and into his left hand as he’s falling….obviously held on.

Maybe some authority figure can delete my duplicate post…..

The catch by Wise was superb – up and over the wall, and then on the way down the ball popped out of his mitt and he barehanded it.

Also, the best part:

This week I am in a head-to-head matchup against another Cubs fan in a large fantasy league. This Cubs fan happens to own Mark Buehrle.

He left him on the bench today.

I am never letting him live it down.

Buerhle

Guys as you know I am involved with a lot of charity stuff in the area. Mark is a really good guy and it couldn’t happen to a nicer White Sox player. I unabashedly admit I root for him (unless he is pitching against him).

I also met his family at a Sox game. I was with some people who knew them and they stopped by our tailgate. Had a nice conversation with his mother and either sister or sister in law.

He also was put through a personal ringer a few years ago. But it has a happy ending as he is happily married and a dad now.

I had to delete my twitter account. But you can still find me at fanfiction.net under puckish prosecutor.

I’m not trying to start anything, but third grade-level insults don’t exactly contribute much to the conversation.

By the same token, I know to stop talking to someone about baseball as soon as they call the Cubs the Flubs, Scrubs, or any other rhyming dictionary feat of wit.

What I cannot applaud is Hawk Harrelson's lame call of the final out....

…you have to be ready…you have to be thinking about you are going to say in the event of a history-making event…

But, no — all this guy can say the moment the final out is recorded is " YES! YES! YES! YES!" It takes him more precious seconds to actually explain what just happened.

Obviously, TV can tell the story in pitctures, but a good pbp guy just has to do better than that. Ed Farmer’s radio call was adequate, but “they’re going crazy at US Cellular Field" was, well…..obvious. He gets a B- for that call, but at least you knew what was happening.

I know Ronnie can fall into the same trap, but he is not the pbp guy. But for that bad call to end a historic event Hawk should…..take some bench…

(Nice to see over 25K can show up at the park for a day game when the team is battling for first.)

Harrelson

Until today, I hadn’t heard Harrelson since the mid- ’80s in Boston. He was actually a pretty good color person then – he would tell stories and be a little offbeat and add a nice note to a conservative broadcast. Reading the comments here I had always sort of wondered what all the fuss was about.

Until today. Now I understand. The guy has gone way, way too far – he was detracting from the moment with his ranting. It was like viewing the action through a windshield coated with squashed bugs.

You would think that a baseball play by play man

would think all the time about how they would handle certain historical events if they occurred during a game they were broadcasting, not least because as oft-played historical highlights they could seal their own legacies as announcers. It’s clear that in the decades Harrelson has worked as a play by play guy, he never once stopped to reflect on this. With absolutely no prepration and no skill at improvising or contemporizing, all he could do was babble like an idiot all over Buerhle’s great achievement.

Was on the road driving back to Chicago.

Heard the last three innings on the radio. Very exciting.

Especially heartwarming was the fact that the Rays players stood and applauded Buehrle and he tipped his cap to them. That’s as it should be — professionals acknowledging that something very special had happened. And it’s why even if the Cubs do get no-hit someday, I will applaud — not because they lost, but as a tip o’the cap to the opposing pitcher, whoever it is.

Congrats to Buehrle, a class act.

Rare air...

… at work today, as we followed the game, a coworker who is not much of a baseball fan was astounded that this was only the 18th perfect game in the history of baseball. She was sure that with all the games, all the teams and thru all the years there would have to have been more.

This was a perfect game but it was without a doubt also accomplished in part because of his team. Wish I was there to have seen it in person.

Both teams are poised to finish in first. I hope that’s how things work out.

Attendance, meh

The Sox attendance is around the same as the Twins & Tigers.

Why are attendance and popularity contests so popular to so many Cubbie fans? Who cares, unless you’re a share holder. Al, throughout the 50’s and up until the late 60’s the Sox routinely outdrew the Cubs, did that concern you then?

It's often said ...

… by Cubbie fans that Sox fans care more about the Cubbies losing than the Sox winning. I’ve never heard a Sox fan say anything remotely close to that. That’s just Cubbie fans putting down Sox fans. My twist on that is that IF that’s true then Cubbie fans care more about beating the Sox in attendance/popularity than winning the World Series, since attendance/popularity are so frequently mentioned by Cubbie fans.

One of my favorites that I heard very often from Cubbie fans following the Sox 2005 World Championship was the TV ratings. ROFLMAO!

It’s amazing how Cubbie fans feel validated by attendance/popularity. I frankly wouldn’t care if favorite team finished last in attendance if they won the World Series.

… that I have gone many times to the Cell for games NOT involving the Cubs, NOT wearing any Cubs gear and STILL hearing Sox fans there yelling “CUBS SUCK!”

by Al on Jul 28, 2009 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Personal experience...

… I’ve had the same experience at Wrigley. Witnessed it myself several times and read about it in (in the Sun-Times) 2003 when the Cubbies clinched that there was a chant of “Sox suck.”

The only times I’ve EVER heard chants of “CUBS SUCK” at the Cell is when there have been Cubbie fans prancing around in their Cubbie gear and taunting Sox fans. Even at that, I’ve only heard that once or twice and that was years ago.

But how does your personal experience prove that oft repeated urban myth that “Sox fans care more about the Cubs losing…”

The Sun-Times documented Cubbie fans chanting anti-Sox crap after the clinched.

The only times I’ve EVER heard anyone chanting anti-Cubbie crap was when Cubbie fans were working at irritating and igniting the situation.

  • Cubbie fans in Cubbie garb at The Cell
    vs.
  • Sox fans in Sox garb at Wrigley

The oft repeated myth is that it’s worse at The Cell in this situation, but I’ll tell you that’s exactly the opposite. Cubbie fans go out of their freaking minds if you wear, even the smallest, Sox stuff at Wrigley.

"People shouldn’t bust your chops just because you’re a Sox fan on a Cub board — but I know it happens. FWIW, I think sites like this are more interesting when fans of other teams join in the conversation." by Shanghai Badger on Mar 13, 2009

The same reason people sell racist t-shirts outside Wrigley

But, why acknowledge there are idiots in both fan bases, much more fun to wildly demean each other!

The Chicago Bulls.....the more profitable Los Angeles Clippers.

See what I mean, everyone?

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

No

I really don’t. What seems to be the issue here?

Outstanding

Count me as huge fan of Buerhle. The guy is a left-handed Greg Maddux. A World Series ring, 130 wins, 2 no-hitters and his entire career with the Sox. You have to root for stories like that.

Cubs will win 79 to 83 games. Season has been over for weeks. St. Louis will eventually run away with this division. And you can print it. BLou (7/21/09)

Heard Buerhle on the radio

For his first no-hitter in 2007 he bought all his teammates a fancy watch. This time he is buying something even better. Plans on spending a LOT of money.

Again, you got to like guys like Buerhle.

Dewayne Wise should get a house

a car, a watch, another car, and a condo.

Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

Hats off to a great pitcher who's finally getting his due

Congrats to him and all Sox fans from this Cubs’ diehard.

Kudos to #56

Gotta love seeing a class act like Buehrle pitch a perfect game, second no-no of his career. He really is in the upper etchelon of Major League pitchers and a game like today’s couldn’t have happened to a better guy.

I loved watching this game. Good for him. I’m no Sox fan but it was still a hell of a thing to see. Congrats, Mark!

Buerhle

Buerhle once said the only thing he doesn’t like about being in the AL is he’d love to hit. And he hit a homerun this year in an interleague game (or it might have been last year(.

This guy is a complete class act. When I ran a charity event he was a part of a few years ago he teased me about being a Cubs fan but it was good natured, I said I rooted for him except when he pitched against us. Frankly I root for the Sox or don’t care either way unless they play us.

Even when he pitches against us I want him to not win and not get the loss and for us to beat the pen.

I had to delete my twitter account. But you can still find me at fanfiction.net under puckish prosecutor.

Not everyone in Chicago was rooting for Buerhle

the cubbie blue nation turned green with envy to aee a Sox player do this. they know they will never see a cubbie pitcher throw a perfect game. i am proud of Buerhle threw that game and stuck it to all the cub fans at bars across city rooting for a hit

take it easy
why care about a bloggers grammar

Yeah, I'm sure that's just what Mark was thinking

in the ninth after Wise made that circus catch.

“Sweet, only two outs to go and I can really stick it to those damn Cubs fans!”

What a special boy...

"Every player should be accorded the privilege of at least one season with the Chicago Cubs. That's baseball as it should be played - in God's own sunshine. And that's really living." ~Alvin Dark
