ROY HALLIDAY

HOW ABOUT THIS DEAL?

Cubs should trade fonzi soriano and kosuke for halliday. The cubsa should just give up on the outfield for this season and rely on the likes of reed johnson milton bradley and hoffpaur and possibly trade minor leaguers for another outfielder. Defense wins championships and the sorianos defense is suspect. The cubs would have zambrano lilly halliday and dempster. No one can compete with our pitching. Our infielders our good enough offensivly to get the job done. If we dont do this trade the phillies or cards are gonna trade for halliday. This is a once in a life time oppurtunity ot get a cy young candidate. PLEASE DO THIS CUBBIES!!!!

bradley scales hoffpaur and maybe we could trade some minor leaguers for another outifielder. We would just need good defensive players because we would have such a good pitching staff. our infielers would score runs and sotos pretty good

Holy Cow!

This is a brilliant idea!!!

No seriously guys, listen!

With Reed playing the corner outfields, that’ll leave Mike Fontenot playing center and hitting 30 homers over the final 62 games! Seriously, I kid you not, this guy may have something there.

Now if we could only do something about second base.

Or the fact that we have no one to back up any of our position players.

Because that’s all that standing between us and a championship!

by Josh77 on Jul 24, 2009 9:23 PM CDT reply actions

Weird? I don't know if you are serious or not, but you start

off by stating you want to trade two players with NTCs in their contracts to a team that is clearly heading into a rebuilding mode. Do you think they would want two players on the down side of 30 who haven’t exactly been tearing it up? I’m going out on a limb here, but I’m thinking they probably want some top prospects for Halladay, not a couple of high priced underachievers. Fantasy trades make for good laughs, but you have to admit this one is WAY out there. I’d love to get the best pitcher in baseball and unload our crap, but come on, at least make it reasonable.

It's not hard to understand how trades work. Teams trade based on need. Toronto

needs young prospects, not expensive established veterans. They can’t afford contracts like Soriano and Fukudome. They realize they can’t win in their division with the team as it is currently constructed. It’s really not that complicated.

no

you’re not getting dissed for recommending we try to get Halladay.

What you’re getting dissed for is the very unrealistic fantasy-baseball package you’re suggesting we use to get Halladay.

Why would Soriano waive his NTC when he was specific about wanting to stay with a team for a long time? Why would we trade Dome, who is starting to really produce for us? And for ghod’s sake, why would we want two outfield positions covered by Fox and Bradley?

Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

They are asking the Phillies for Happ plus three other top prospects

The Cubs version of this request would be something like Soto, J. Fox, Vitters, Cashman, and Starlin Castro. And Halliday would probably expect three years tacked onto his current contract to stretch it out to 2013.

This isn’t 1984 where “all” the Indians wanted for half a season of what had been a so-so Sutcliffe was Joe Carter and Mel Hall. For comparison, when Randy Johnson got traded to the Astros in his prime as a pure rental, the haul included Freddy Garcia, Carlos Guillen, and John Halama (who wasn’t bad before he got hurt). With a season left for Halliday’s current contract, it’s not worth it.

It became a bigger need when Lilly went down

Maybe Dempster’s return fills that void, maybe it doesn’t. Maybe Hart can continue as the 5th starter, maybe he doesn’t. Maybe Harden is able to make the rest of his starts, maybe he doesn’t. Yes, starting pitching has been the strength of the team so far, but recent developments make it look less certain. Another starter may not be a bigger need than LH bullpen help, but it is more necessary than Freddy Sanchez.

As a completely new poster, what constitutes a recommended post as opposed to the generic post? As a refugee from the idiocy of AOL message boards, I was subjected to inane posts such as this daily, usually by children. Does the original poster recommend himself? I couldn’t decipher what makes this recommended.

mostly rec’d to show off the … entertainment… regulars got from a post.

in general, they’re usually things we like and would want someone else to read. you can rec comments and posts by clicking the “actions” link and then ticking the “rec” link.

A comment that recieves several ’rec’s turns green. A post that gets several recs gets moved to the top so other people see it.

maybe hanley ramieriz. The marlins are always looking to give away good players cause they dont want to pay them. We can move to theriot to 2nd and Ramieriz to ss. We could two minor leaguers and maybe fox who is good young hitter.

Hanley Ramirez signed a 6 year 70 million dollar deal last year they need him to fill their new stadium they are not giving him up.

For teams to trade good proven players (Halladay, Ramirez, etc.) usually takes prospects which unfortunately we don’t have alot of.

Since you seem to want some tips on being an amateur GM:

1) It’s not always about making a big trade, like getting Halladay or Hanley Ramirez. It is about getting what you need. Look at the Cubs’ roster, it is pretty much set with veterans, or long-term contracts, at every position. This is why the Cubs are looking to get some bullpen help or a backup starter. The players we have need to perform at the level they were signed to perform at. For more help on contracts, see Cot’s Contracts.
2) Teams do not typically “give away good players,” especially the Marlins, the Marlins have this continued stream of good players because they scout players from other teams very well when making trades. This is why the Marlins seem to compete every year, despite having a $36 million payroll, compared to the Cubs’ $135 million. The Blue Jays, for example, want top pitching prospects, plus some other quality prospects, not 30+ year old outfielders with contracts bigger than what Halladay is receiving. Teams are not always trading veterans because they cannot afford them, sometimes it’s just to get younger. Trades, in theory, should make both teams better, why would the Blue Jays or the Marlins hand us their best players, for a “couple minor leaguers?”
3) Understand the no-trade clause and the 5-10 rule. A no-trade clause, that many of the Cubs’ players have in their long-term contracts specifies, that the player may reject any trade. The 5-10 rule, means if a player has been in the major leagues for 10 years and the last 5 with the same team, the player may reject any trade or minor league assignment. For even more help on this along with how options, DFA, and the DL see the ESPN Transaction Primer. So unless the Cubs are in last place, do not think that guys like Soriano, Fukudome, Zambrano, Lee, or anyone else would even think about approving a trade.
4) Further more on trades making you better. Giving up your one of your best power hitters to get another starting pitcher does not make much sense, does it? Especially when you do not really need another starting pitcher, recent injuries aside. Reed Johnson, unfortuantely cannot fill Soriano’s shoes at the plate, this is why he is not starting everyday.
5) Everyone else, please feel free to add a few more tips for our budding Jim Hendry.

Rec'd

This comment is both honest and concilliatory. You’ll get a lot more information back, as well as far fewer sarcastic replies, by asking questions and admitting, up front, that you don’t understand the machinations involved.

If you really do want to work in a team’s front office, my first piece of advice would be to start paying more attention in English class. You could have all the savvy of Branch Rickey but if your cover letter contains comical grammatical mistakes, they won’t even look at the CV beneath it. We all make silly mistakes with the language but both your original fanpost and your comments lead me to believe that a) you’re very young or b) neither English nor Spanish (it’s spelled “Ramirez”, just like the surname of the Cubs’ 3rd baseman) is your first language.

The Cubs have ZERO AAA prospects of note. Well, maybe 1/2 of one if you count Jake Fox, and the Marlins don’t need him. Any trade for Ramirez, Halliday, etc. would require something like Marshall, Vitters, Cashner, and Castro. As in ALL FOUR OF THEM.
