Possible Trades according to Bruce Levine
With starter Ted Lilly on the shelf for approximately three weeks, ESPN Chicago's Bruce Levine says Cubs GM Jim Hendry may have been pushed in the direction of adding a starter before Friday's trade deadline. The team could opt to move Sean Marshall back into the rotation, but that would leave manager Lou Piniella without a reliable lefthanded option in the pen.
The Cubbies have spoken to the Pirates about reliever John Grabow, but Levine says a move for Zach Duke or Tom Gorzelanny "may be the right avenue to follow with the loss of Lilly." He lists Carl Pavano, Jon Garland and Doug Davis as other starters available right now.

Hey!
So we could get Garland back and that would put to rest the argument made by the remaining fans who think we never should have let him go
I'm a lefty, maybe Lou should give me a shot for a position in the bullpen!!

Grabow
I think Grabow seems like a pretty likely move. An extra arm and cheap to boot. They shouldn’t have to give up much at all for him.
Doug Davis is probably not as good a pitcher if his stats aren’t padding by facing the Cubs twice a year lol
Really Hart is actually pitching better than most teams 5th starter right now? Will he eventually implode? Maybe but I wouldn’t be too sad to at least try him out. Dempster should be back soon and Lilly’s injury doesn’t seem season threatening.
What we DO need is a catcher and sooner than later. I guess Koyie Hill is a strange good luck charm and they seem to win more often than not with him in the lineup, but he can’t hit and I don’t think its good for a guy to have to catch every day for a month.

agreed about koyie hill
if soto is not coming back anytime soon then we need a catcher that can produce or at least a backup. I would love adding Zach Duke but if comes then who goes if we ever have everyone healthy.

is he really THAT valuable
I’d give them Chris Carpenter or Jay Jackson and call it even. Maybe Kevin Hart if they asked nicely.
by jeff_pico on Jul 25, 2009 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Carpenter or Hart, sure
Jackson? No way. Duke is a pretty good pitcher, but Jackson is a stud in the minors, and has only been a full-time pitcher for a couple of years (and is only going to get better, IMO).
The Cubs have a number of pretty good bullpen arms that might interest Duke. Maybe we could package Hart and Ascanio or Hart, Maestri, and another lesser prospect for Duke and Grabow. That would be fair, IMO.
Or maybe Hendry has compromising pics of Neal Huntington and can make them take Heilman in the process…

Doesn't matter if it will be fair.
What matters is what the Pirates want for him.

I don't give a division opponent either one.
Maybe Kevin Hart – his value should be up, given three relatively successful starts.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

I'm not sure any of the strarters
except maybe Duke, would be any better then what we already have on the roster.

As far as Lilly is concerned...
… why not just slot Marshall into his spot and then see what B.J. Ryan has left? Although I wouldn’t be against getting Duke,

This is a scenario that very well could happen when Ryan is ready.
Ryan is to report to Iowa tomorrow (Monday) and then maybe a week later, back to the major leagues.

Lilly will be gone for 3 weeks
If offense is clicking, we won’t be missing him too much. Now if Soto is gone longer, get us a catcher!

We're going to need one anyway
Soto, even when he comes back, has shown this is a lost year for him. And God only knows how much he will weigh when he gets back.

He was showing that
But he was playing better…not great. He just had a really horrible April. I can settle if he’s going to hit .260 with some patience at the plate.
Plus, hitting or not, he’s much better behind the plate than our other options and I think starting pitching ERA will go down a little.

To date
I would agree Soto’s year has been lost. But if you can have him mid August on, he has a chance to turn it around.

Well who doesn't love Italian Beef
In all seriousness, at this point in the year, there are a few guys who’s season is not going to be a good one. Keeping that in mind, we can only for what they do today and tomorrow and the rest of the season. I for one thought Soriano was going to slump all year. Yes he’s had a good July and might not hit in August and September, but I didn’t think he was even going to hit this month!

I am very curious...
…as to how Soto will respond when he comes back, and I hope it is positive.
I got a kick out of Jim Hendry the other day, he said Soto weighs about the same as he did his rookie year. Well Jim, I think you may be about 25-30 pounds off on that one.

at a minumum
could be longer, and that is the eventuality they should prepare for. They need to get another arm.

No on Jackson
He might be major league ready soon. With his athleticism, and move to full time pitcher recently I am not interested in giving him up for a journeyman reliever type, or a two month rental. For a guy like Grabow you give up someone most of us have never heard of from Daytona or below. I am not sure we panic and go for a starter. We wait on that to see what Dempster does. If he is effective for five innings on his first game back I concentrate on a back-up catcher, and a lefty. I don’t think Ryan does anything for us. The Jays ate a ton of money. They did that for a reason. Ryan is probably someone they got on the cheap with the hope they can fix him for next year. If he was of any value to anyone this year I can’t see how the Jays just dropped him.

for Duke

I Would Say...
…go for a starter. Duke sounds like a great acquisition. has there been any confirmed rumblings about Haren?
This could be a good way to shore up the ’pen. Get another starter and slide Hart into the ’pen and send Berg down. When Lilly is back, slide Wells into the ’pen, sending Stevens down. Or, send Wells or Hart down for pitching depth until Sept call-ups.
Simultaneously, trade/DFA Heilman. And, finish the Beimel deal.
Perhaps the chatter of a trade and the lefty homerun can light Bradley? That will be welcomed, as I don’t see a Bradley to Tigers/Rangers deal netting Dunn happening. .

You're seriously contemplating pulling Randy Wells from the rotation and sending him down?
And how the hell would we get Haren?

Aaron Miles and Andres Blanco for Haren. yeah, that should do it…. :)

Beimel
The Nationals need such a volume of players, and Beimel is one of their two nominal closers. I have no idea if they’d take a package of Ascaino, a quad-A guy like Jason Dubois, and Aaron Miles (with the Cubs eating some of the salary) for Beimel, but I’d sure be asking. All three of those guys would be immediate upgrades to the Nationals 25-man roster, even Miles – the Nationals “top” pinch hitters are Jim Bowden’s boy Austin Kearns and a 300 year old Ronnie Belliard, neither of whom is hitting .200.
Ascaino would immediately become their 8th inning guy, DuBois would become their power bat off of the bench, and Miles could stand at 2B occasionally just as well as Belliard as well as backing up Zimmerman at 3B once a month.

Beimel appears to have the makings of a decent LOOGY.
His overall numbers the last few years don’t impress me, but it looks like he could get the job done vs. LHH. If the Nats would give him up for Ascanio (whom I actually like but is kind of a question mark), Dubois and Miles – I’d do it. Hell, I’d do it just to get rid of Miles.
