Pathetic

I can’t believe I once liked that guy.

+1

I can’t believe he once dated my mom….

Maybe he wasn’t a tool in the mid 70’s.

You know, because of crap like this

I’m beginning to sympathize with Milton Bradley where the media are concerned.

Stone is a true professional at describing a baseball-game-in-progress,

and little else.

I’m glad that the rumor isn’t true. Who knows how MB’s Cubs career will end, but I’m glad we didn’t sign him to 1/2 year, $5 mil, and get what we’ve gotten. I’m interested to hear Sarah Spain’s take on his personality… I’ve gotten a very positive impression of him when he’s in street clothes. Let’s hope that the temporary benching and today’s homerun response is a sign of good things to come.

From that article, I liked the big-boned comment about Geo.

Also, I’m watching the replay from the game today, and Heilman needs to go now. He needs to go far, far away— much farther away than the homerun balls he gives up

GOTTA AGREE ON THE

Heilman issue and wonder what Lou’s master plan is . Other than the score of the games in Detroit did you have a good time ?? Just a little warm wasn"t it ??

by cubs north on Jul 25, 2009 11:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Hey CN!

I always have a great time in Detroit and this time was no exception!

I missed Belle Isle b/c fireworks, but weren’t those neat to see from the stadium?
I got to see a Daimler-sponsored project of putting in at least $10K worth of gardens in front of the old train station, and I still can’t figure out why.
I got to see the last moments of Tiger Stadium (again).
And I found out that the relics for sale from Tiger Stadium at the historical society included used pop cups, seat backs, and (weird) generic cleats.

Did you get to enjoy some old haunts on your visit?

The Bradley-Detroit thing didn’t make sense from the get-go b/c of their back loaded contracts (see: Sheffield, Bonderman, WIllis), and it was said a month ago that their attendance was down almost 10,000 / game over last year. They’re kindof in the same boat we are- by sending down Anderson last week, they’re saying they don’t have much depth in major-league ready corner outfielders.

ALL IN ALL...

We had a good time in the motor city ….Yes the fireworks were great . The heat was the worst part of the Thursday game . Wish we could have put our W flaf out at least once . Might make it to Wrigley in September . Yes we checked out a few old haunts …..Go Cubs

Hendry needs glasses me thinks

A quote from that article.

Does Soto need to get in better condition to avoid injuries like his oblique strain?

“No, he’s naturally a big-boned guy,” Hendry said. "I don’t think his weight is any different than last year when he won [N.L.] Rookie of the Year.

It's not his bones that

are big, it’s his ass and gut. I hate it when people use the big bones excuse. There is no abdomen bone that makes your gut spill over your pants.

God, I had the same reaction to that quote...

Soto FOR SURE came into the year noticeably larger than last year, and last year he was overweight as well. He must lose at least 15-20 lbs…

I’m one of them guys that are multi-talented, can do a lot of things.

Yeah, he’s multi-talented all right. He can strike out, hit into double plays and forget how many outs there are.

Not neccesarily debunked

Stone said the Tigers were interested. He didn’t say they talked to the Cubs about it, or that the Cubs were interested in dealing him.

Perhaps Stone has some contacts with the Tigers, and they told him they’d had internal discussions about whether to inquire to the Cubs about Bradley.

I really doubt he just made the whole thing up.

DEJESUS!!!

One beat reporter

does not completely debunk a rumor. Stone reported it, Kaplan said he also heard it from another source iirc.

I am not saying the rumor is true. I am saying it hasn’t been debunked.

DEJESUS!!!

You decide whether you think I'm credible or not.

However, I heard AGAIN today that there WAS an inquiry by the Tigers… however, it went no further.

by Al Yellon on Jul 26, 2009 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions

That's an interesting wrinkle to the story.

It appears to me that someone within the Tigers organization was saying something regarding Bradley. But, in any case, my problem with Steve Stone isn’t so much the fact that he floated this rumor – it’s his constant snarky attitude toward the Cubs (Bradley in particular) and his defensive, unprofessional response to skepticism about the rumor.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

by daver on Jul 27, 2009 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Stone made himself look like a real idiot in this situation. Calling out Bruce Miles was completely uncalled for and unprofessional.

I agree Tomas21

Just because I have interest in Car X doesn’t mean I stopped by the dealership to buy one. Stoney would have no reason to make up a story like this. The WS are in Detroit and Stone was talking with some of his contacts.

No reason to make up a story?

People make up stories all the time for attention. People make up stories to sew dissension among people they dislike. I don’t know Steve Stone, and am not willing to judge his motivations in this. But you can tell by the ferocity with which the Cubs answered this story that it hurt them. They don’t want MB to think they’re talking about moving him.

Again

Stone said the Tigers were talking about Bradley. The Cubs did not necessarily have to know about it.

DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on Jul 26, 2009 8:01 PM CDT up reply actions

were the Tigers

talking to a wall?

Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

by drewishdrewid on Jul 26, 2009 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Analogy

Hendry: What do you think of player X? Could he help us?
Asst GM Bush: Maybe, let’s wait and see if he starts hitting first?
Hendry: Sounds good, we have some scouts watch him, and if they like what they see we’ll give them a call.

Note that nowhere in there was player X’s team notified the Cubs were interested or discussing him.

DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on Jul 27, 2009 12:33 PM CDT up reply actions

if that's the case

why on earth would anyone on the Tigers staff tell the press about it? They’d HAVE to know it would be repeated, ESPECIALLY if they told Stone.

Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

by drewishdrewid on Jul 27, 2009 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Why does

anyone ever talk to the press? Ego maybe? It happens all the time. And Stone was in Detroit when he reported it, so he certainly had opportunity.

Stone, Kaplan and Al all heard from different sources that this occurred. The only people I’ve heard refute it are beat writers, who are more in the loop than me or you, but they’re don’t know everything discussed in the front office. I choose to believe there is something to it, because there is more believable evidence to me there is something there.

I think people are irrationally not believing this because Stone was one of the people who said it. I don’t agree with how he’s acting, but that doesn’t mean what he said is fabricated.

DEJESUS!!!

by tomas21 on Jul 27, 2009 7:42 PM CDT up reply actions

And the Tigers may have talked about Bradley.

I don’t pretend to be able to judge what is true and false in this. I’m just telling you that liars can have motivation for lying.

Randy Wells - You continue to astound me.

Steve Stone

does not need a reason to make up divisive stories about the Cubs.

Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

by drewishdrewid on Jul 26, 2009 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Bingo

This time of year lots of teams are talking about lots of things. I highly doubt Stone just came up with this out of nowhere and decided to spread it around. Could have been a low level discussion that went nowhere. But, it has some legitimate legs.

by Nibbles on Jul 26, 2009 10:45 AM CDT reply actions

Well...

…we have no way of knowing whether it has “legitimate legs” at all.
