2009 Trade Deadline Discussion
With the deadline fast approaching I wanted to start a thread for all rumors, trades, opinions etc. I still think we need a couple bullpen arms and maybe a bench player.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette we are in regular contact with the Bucs. I think we all have thrown around names on here such as Zach Duke, John Grabow, Matt Capps, Tom Gorzelanny, Ian Snell, Jack Wilson, and Freddy Sanchez. I think some of those names could be really useful here.
Here's a link to SB Nation's mlbdailydish who seem to be doing a good job at everything trade rumors.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

There are a lot of interesting storylines this time of year
I don’t see the Cubs doing anything major, though. SP should be solid if everyone gets and stays healthy (fingers crossed). Bullpen has been surprisingly good the last few weeks, but could use a LOOGY (minor move).
A backup catcher is needed, but apparently not as much as a 12th pitcher that never pitches . . . .
If the Cubs were to make a splash, I’d like for it to be trading Bradley to Detroit getting a solid MI, but I don’t know who’s dealing there.

My wants for the most part are:
Beimel and Grabow for the pen. Then move Marshall back to the Rotation. Try to find a solid bat off the bench that can play 2-3 positions.

Moving Marshall to the rotation is a better solution than going out and trading for a rent a starter

This is great!
I love this time and the Winter Meetings.
As we have known for a while, due to the “Zell Factor”, we will not be counting on taking on much $$.
And, at least we have been getting some nice production from the majority of our rookies, which is a pleasant surprise after Pie and K-Pat.
I really thought that the Cubs would consider taking a shot at Julio Lugo considering Fontenot is struggling mightily and Blanco (although he is a plus defender) cannot hit.
BUT – he goes to the @#*&ing Cardinals!
More concerned about Holliday, anyway, than Lugo. They still have Wellemeyer, lol!

I looked at the stats
of some of the Bruce Levine names. Sherril is the best of the lot, imo. But its McFail there. Que problemo? Jack Wilson is not an upgrade over Theriot is he? and Zach Duke would be a nice addition – young guy, also. But at what cost?
PLUS – do we trust Hendry?

At this time of the year for the most part. He seems to do his best work. It’s the offseason he seems to have trouble, but that’s a convo for a different day.

Jack Wilson IS an upgrade over Theriot
However he is not a significant upgrade over Blanco, which is why I think they won’t go after him. Wilson’s defense isn’t good enough to validate a trade. Theriot isn’t HORRIFIC in the field, so we’ll keep putting him out there. He’s hitting about .300 so we have to be happy there

I don't think Teahen is a realistic 2B
which leaves the 4 corners for him, and I don’t think he’s likely to out-hit our guys on the corners if they’re healthy. I do think he would be a MASSIVE improvement on swingnmissMicah as a bench player, but you don’t give up much for a bench player, unless you’re worried your 4 corners guys aren’t healthy.
So, long-story-short – I don’t think he’s worth enough to us to give enough to convince the Royals to trade him.

Bullpen arms, 2nd base
We need a LOOGY and another solid arm in the pen.
The, the only position we can upgrade is 2nd base, and if somehow we get a stud it could change the complexion of the lineup and improve the bottom of the order black hole:
Fukudome
Sanchez/2B Stud
Lee
Ramirez
Bradley
Soriano
Theriot
Soto/C
Pitcher

I tihnk
putting Theriot in the 7 hole is just asking for him to start pulling everything out of the park. He seems to be more effective when his is doing more situaitonal hitting and going to RF.

good point
so flip theriot and geo? I just like the idea of theriot getting on base and having a chance to drive him in though they’d probably pitch around geo more.
So bat Theriot 8th, have the pitcher bunt him over, and take our chances with Fukudome and the new 2B :)

Let’s look at this suckage:
Last 14: .233 .258 .500
Last 7: .071 .133 .286
Plus the whiff last night.
Oh – how about this season?
.231 .302 .374

I think
another starter would really help our chances this year.
There are more questions in the rotation than you might think. Zambrano has been great lately, but hasn’t been as dominant all year as normal. Lily has a shoulder and a knee injury, and we don’t know how effective he’ll be once he comes back. Dempster has been up and down all year. Wells has been great, but doesn’t have a track record to make you think it will last all year. Hart walks WAY too many to think he’ll sustain his ERA.

3) 2B bat (Uggla/Teahan/Orlando Cabrera)

If need be....
…yes, depending on the return.
You take advantage of your window when it’s open. I would venture to say most fans would be content with a 2009 World Series Championship and a depleted farm system. I know I would.
There is a world market out there to draft from – and about 100 rounds each year of draft picks. If any one or two trades is all it takes to deplete the Farm System in its entirety and “Mortgage the Future,” the the farm system was never all that reliable to begin with.
The goal is to avoid going 103, 104, 110 years without a Championship. Cries for patience after 101 years, and several years under the current GM, are unreasonable at this point. I think 101 years is adequate time enough to demand a team adopt a “win now” approach for a couple of years…..
Again, it depends also on the return. Young LH SP with good stuff? Yes.
.300 hitter who drives in runs? Yes.
37-Year old player with a big contract, who is on the decline? No.

by The Jade Scorpion on Jul 27, 2009 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Jade, I'm looking at it another way
Championships come from hard work and good decisionmaking. Our farm system is getting better. We had a good draft class in 2008, and the top icks are up and going in 2009. I don’t think one trade would ‘deplete the farm’ like the Cardinals have done recently. But making one good trade won’t guarantee anything. Philly and the Dodgers look very good, and picking up Sanchez (or anyone else) won’t guarantee us anything. We’ve had slumps at horrible times the last 2 Octobers.
Sanchez and Duke are both good players. I’m not convinced either are significant upgrades, especially when finances are considered. If the Cubs play well from here, they have a legitimate shot at the playoffs. But to overspend (cash or prospects) isn’t a wise thing to do. There will always be opportunities to add quality talent. But developing a winning organization isn’t about being impulsive.

Personal Opinion on the Trade Deadline
Move it back a week to 10 days. With the Wild Card and Three Divisions per league, teams are still in the hunt and moves sometimes are made after the deadline wiht some twists being needed to make it happen.

Interesting thought
An August 10th or 15th Deadline may make a bit more sense for the reasons you noted. Wonder what the reasons against that may be…

One issue I can think of...
Player’s values would end up going down if they were being acquired August 10th or 15th. Let’s say a team has 65 games left to play and they’re looking to acquire some big name player but they’re not sure if they’re buyers or sellers. 15 days go by and then on August 15th they’re leading their division by 2.5 games. Now they want to acquire that same player, but I’m sure they’re not gonna want to give up nearly as much in terms of prospects if they’re only going to have the new player for 50 games (as opposed to 65).
I could see why it would be an interesting option, but I could also see it making trades much more difficult and thus less likely to happen.

Yea true...
But those trade are a little more complicated I believe because the players involved would have to go through waivers first (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong).
My whole argument was that if the non-waiver deadline were extended until August 15th, teams wouldn’t want to give up as much in terms of players and prospects for a player they’re only going to have for 50 games instead of 65.

I agree
The Cubs do need another 300 hitter . A couple of minor leaguers will do it . Sorry Fontenot is not doing it at 225 – 230 batting average .. The Cubs would have 8 solid hitters in their lineup .. Then if the teams hits an all cylinders watch out .. lets get Sanchez

Oh, he will.
As soon as it’s the fifth inning and he needs to leave for his bathroom break.

I've heard of guys being regular, but the 5th inning of every game regardless of start time and time zone?
That’s scary.
if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

even the seagulls
don’t have that kind of consistency.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

I guess if you've been doing that for 10-15 years (or however long its been)
you can condition the body to, ahem, respond around the 5th inning.
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg

It's amazing what you can condition it to do
For example, on the rare occassion when I’ve travelled in rural China, I could go for a day without, ahem . . .

an involuntary biological reaction, and I cleaned it up, thank you very much.

Me thinks the Freddy Sanchez
thing ain’t gonna happen. About $8MM in salary to take on.
Again, its the “Zell Effect”.

Or, you could call it the
Gee-he’s-clearly-not-worth-8M-effect.

Can we start
The Brian Roberts rumors again .. ??

I know they have been inconsistant all year but...
As a team everyone is having better at bats now that Rameriez is back. When he went down most everyone on the team started pressing to make something happen. I think that is Bradleys biggest problem. He had no pressure on him last lear in Texas and was great, but now he has the biggest contract he has ever had and he is on a team that should win.
Maybe they have finally turned that corner this year. Even last year in the playoffs the problem wasn’t the lack of a left handed bat. They looked nervous. If they can relax this team has enough talent to compete with any team in baseball as is

Sounds like Freddy Sanchez may be headed to San Francisco and Jarrod Washburn to the Yankees
Cubs will win 79 to 83 games. Season has been over for weeks. St. Louis will eventually run away with this division. And you can print it. BLou (7/21/09)

I should preface and say latest "strong" rumor
Sanchez to the Giants makes a lot of sense. Washburn to the Yankees does too.

Seems like hendry is going for Grabow as the lefty reliever
According to piratesreport.com
Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs have stepped up their pursuit of left-handed reliever John Grabow. However, the Cubs have one of the game’s weakest farm systems and it is believed they have few minor-leaguers who interest the Pirates

…
He can throw a fastball at 87MPH and make you look like a fool. He can spray lines drives to right field. He can put up with crappy offense and take the loss. He is Randy Wells. He is the most interesting pitcher in the world. Stay healthy, my friends.
