What are the cubs needs at the deadline?
The cubs starting pitching when healthy is enough to get us to the world series when healthy. People say a team needs four quality starting pitchers in the playoffs. The cubs have Dempster, Zambrano, Lilly, and Harden.
The cubs relief pitching has been very strong recently with gregg, marmol, marshall, and guzman. BJ Ryan is also about to come give us help in the bullpen as well.
As far as position players go our outfield is pretty good especially when they are hitting. Hopefully Bradley can start to hit more home runs as the season goes on. Our lineup should get even better once Soto come back. I still think the cubs need a 2nd basemen that can steal bases and get on base. Fontentot seems more like a backup to me and has been really struggling at the plate. That should be the priority for the cubs right now and another reliever would be nice.
The Cubs seem like they are coming along and so I ask who do you think the cubs should try to get at the deadline?

I like the idea
Of going after freddy sanchez to hit in the 2 spot and play 2b making fonty a platoon type player if necessary and a bat off the bench like he probably should be

its a good idea
but im sick of all these platoon guys at 2nd base, why cant the cubs get a starter that is reliable everyday and a guy that can be a true leadoff hitter, is it that hard to find?

Yeah, it is hard to find
Otherwise they’d have it.
And that’s why they tried to get Roberts.

if a guy is a bona fide veteran starter
he’ll make 6 mil a year. if the cubs want to e able to sign a big cahuna free agent, maybe around the time DLee’s contract expires, they have to get cheaper at other posiions. rogers hornsby retired long ago. sandberg too, thoughless so.
so to answer the qustion, “Patience and wisdom.”
agreed
I agree .. Need a 300 average hitter for number 2 spot in batting order .. that plays everyday 2nd base with a good glove and range .. Sanchez would fit good .. Or another 2nd baseman to leadoff .. I think he is on the Orioles …
We have a .300 hitter in the #2 spot already...
his name is Ryan Theriot. I don’t think we need to replace him in the #2 spot.
We’re getting a .700+ OPS from 2B since the Cubs began the platoon of Baker/Fontenot. Depending on the cost it would take to get Sanchez, I’m not sure that acquiring Sanchez would be enough of an upgrade to offset the cost. In fact, if Fontenot gets hot as a platoon player (like he did last year) then it might not be an upgrade at all.

Sanchez is not a priority
The platoon of Baker and Fontenot is fine. No need to give up the few prospects the Cubs have for Sanchez. If they are going to raid the future for the now, trade for pitching help, a LH reliever and possibly a starter (a lot depends on how Dempster does today).

Agreed
The more I see Baker play the more I like the kid. He seems really comfortable at 2nd and looks good turning a double play. Even as a reserve, Fontenot needs to stay. You can’t break up the Cajun connection. If the Cubs make any move at all, it needs to be for a LH reliever.

Agreed.
I can see this Sanchez thing is not going to die easy.

Oh sweetie
I love that you’re trying. I really do.
I don’t think the Cubs will make a trade, although Bruce Miles was talking about Biehmel or Sherrill possibly happening which makes sense.
LOL
I can’t help it . . . I’m sorry all, but I’m about to be inappropriate.

A few days ago, didn’t you have Reed Johnson playing all three outfield positions because you traded Sori and Bradley?

by ambrosiadreams on Jul 28, 2009 12:08 AM CDT reply actions
I actually said we would trade sori and fukudome for halliday. Our outfield would have been bradley, Reed Johnson, and someone like hoffpaur.
At the time I thought it was a good trade now I dont think so. My thinking was that defense wins championships and if we have good pitching then our hitting wouldn’t need to be as good.
But an outfield of soriano, milton, and fukudome is above par in my opinion as much as people dislike these players.

well that’s why i’m not jim hendry. It was a really hypothetical trade and I wish I didn’t post that trade because the blue jays would never want to take on all those contracts. They are looking for younger players.

I take it you're gunna be a sophomore next year?
That’s pretty darn awesome. We’re probably the youngest BCB bloggers. :D
In my opinion, while a staff ace would be nice, I don’t think one would be necessary.
Second base has been a void for quite some time already, which would explain why we wanted He Who Shall Not Be Named coughbrianroberts*cough*]
I also think we need a backup catcher. BTW, has anyone heard any new trade rumors regarding a backup catcher?
I think we’re set at the corner infield spots, as well as the outfield [well, defensively.]
Looking at this, we’re not too shabby. :D
Let’s get the division!!

Also
I forgot to mention a need to get a good bullpen arm.
But I think the relievers we got are mostly doing their job – still wouldn’t hurt to get a few relievers.

Koyie Hill is our good luck charm!!!
Randy Wells. A product of the Roy Halladay School of Pitching, located in Toronto, Canada. Possible relocation.
I'm all for staying pat.
We have the talent, we have the players we need. Maybe a minor deal for a reliever or a second baseman. I thought Zach Duke or a second-tier starter looked appealing when Lilly hit the DL, but now Dempster is back and Harden is pitching much better, so I don’t see as much of a need there. Fact is anything but a truly elite guy isn’t a big enough upgrade to really make a difference and we don’t have enough depth in our system to warrant trading for an elite guy… I mean, Vitters + Castro + Jackson + Cashner ought to be enough to get a real top player if we really wanted to, but then whatever organizational depth we had is completely gone.
As much as I'd love a 2B
We really don’t need one if the team continues to play better.
Last years team was unique in the fact that everyone 1-8 could hit. Once Soto comes back, our #8 hitter would come from 2B hopefully and the team can deal with a guy who might only get one once a game.
If we're going to go after another MI, Marco Scutaro makes a lot of sense.
He has a cheap contract and wouldn’t cost as much prospect wise and his contract is up at the end of the year so it’s not a long term commitment for the new owner. He can play 2B, 3B, and SS. That would be my pick for a position player trade. As far as the bullpen goes, Biemel would be a lot cheaper than Sherrill and would be just as good. Plus they could re-sign him next year for cheap again if they want.
Here's a good poll question -
By the end of the season, who will right-handed pitchers fear to face more – Ryan Theriot or Mike Fontenot? Who do you think?
Randy Wells - You continue to astound me.
BLou says
we’ll be at least 5 games out, so nobody will fear any of us at all.
What would I like?
Same thing I’ve wanted for a while now – a viable SS alternative. I’d love to see the Cubs shoe-horn their way into Anaheim’s trade negotiations for a top starter, making it a three-way trade so we can snag one of Wood, Izturis, Aybar.
Randy Wells - You continue to astound me.
Yep - a real SS would be my first pick
But Hendry and Piniella think that they already have one.

It's no secret that the Cubs's want a lefty reliever
Lets say BJ Ryan gets things back together and pitches well with the Cubs, after the Cubs make a tade for another lefty. What do the Cubs do then? Will BJ Ryan be part of a trade to prevent this? Or wiil there just be two lefy relievers? And what happens to Marshall? So many questions that need to be answered. The Cubs need to think things through before they make a trade.
Marshall could go into the rotation temporarily replacing Lilly.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
And when Lilly comes back
The Cubs will send Stevens or Samardzija back. Hmmmmm… If the Cubs do make a trade, I wounder who will go, minor leaguers or some major leaguers (Miles please).
Dempster replaces Lilly for now
Leave Marshall in the pen where he has been pretty effective. No reason to jerk him around between the rotation and the pen.

Nothing wrong with having two options as lefty relievers...
it’s almost always better to have more options than less. As for Marshall, he’d go to the rotation for a bit (replacing Hart). By the time Lilly is back, the 40-man rosters would be ready to expand anyway.

Sherril
If the cubs go after Sherrill, is he still an arbitration player or will he be a free agent? Wonder what it will take to get him?
Hey, Hey! Hey, Hey! Hey, Hey!
I REALLY THINK
THAT JOE MAUER WOULD BE A GREAT ACQUISITION FOR THIS TEAM. HE IS GOOD. THE TWINS CAN TAKE GEO AND LUIS RIVAS BECAUSE THEIR SECOND BASE POSITION IS BAD. GEO WILL REPLACE MAUER.

Sanchez?
Any number of past years I would have said Sanchez would be a nice player to plug into the Cubs line up. Then there was the shoulder problem and now the knees. He has missed several games recently with his knee(s). Can’t see adding a gimpy player at this point.
A LH relief pitcher might be nice. Haven’t heard how Ryan is doing since his pick up. If he is doing OK and can get a couple of outs in the 6th or 7th innings then not even a LH pitcher would be needed. As long as he can give the Cubs 4-6 weeks of decent pitching he will be useful. It should be easier to find a LH relief pitcher via free agency or winter trade than a trading deadline deal if one is still needed.
Mostly I don’t see the Cubs making a big move. It would be nice and I’d love to be wrong but, not at the cost of giving up too much. But the Cards got Lugo for nothing much (Duncan) and the Giants got Garko for a single A pitcher (with huge upside from what I have read but, still just a single A player) so maybe there’s another deal out there where the Cubs can get some help without giving up much.
