Someone please tell Sori to stop
I wish someone would please tell Soriano to quit waiving his hand in front of his face after hitting homeruns. That is John Cena's taunt from professional wrestling. Last night, Soriano looked like a complete idiot running around the bases with his hand in front of his face. This was after he stood, watched the ball leave the field and then turned to point towards the Houston dugout. What a jerk. Soriano disrespects the game with this charade and makes himself look like an ass. Can't he just let his bat do the talking rather than participate in this childish crap? His actions speak volumes about his character, or lack thereof. With this type of behavior MLB will be reduced to the trash-talking crap equivalent of the WWE and the NBA? I hope that he remembers how to hit the deck tonight when the Astros bring a much deserved beanball to the ballpark. He has it coming.
Feel free to disagree with me. Go ahead, let me have it.

He’s forcing his opinions on others because he doesn’t like Soriano’s showboating, therefore Soriano should stop.
When you, him, or anyone else for that matter can hit 400 foot homeruns in a pressure situation to win the game, feel free to react anyway you want.

I wasn’t smart enough to have an opinion on here.
You may be missing my point.
The OP is definitely allowed to have his opinion. No arguments there. But he’s not saying “I don’t like Sori’s show boating.” He’s saying Sori shouldn’t do it anymore.
Sorry but I’m sick of everyone in todays society trying to tell other people what they should and should not do. If the OP wants to put his head and sprint around the bases after an extra innings, grand slam, walk off homerun, then fine. But until he can do that, please don’t tell Soriano how to react.
Make sense?

In the same way...
that the OP never says that anyone should do anything. He says that he found AS’s display embarrassing. It wasn’t necessarily a bad choice of words, just a hypocritical one.
he says
I wish someone would please tell Soriano to quit waiving his hand in front of his face after hitting homeruns.
Maybe I’m just reading into it too much. But I can’t believe people are now finding a NEW way to bitch at Sori.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
Haha. I want you to keep trying though.
Each one gets better than the last.
As far as the OP, thats pretty much the same as saying “I wish Soriano would quit waving his hand…” Either way it in no way, shape, or form forces his opinion on you or anyone else. It’s just a different way of phrasing it.
oh, i thought you were referring to me as the "OP".
nevermind. i agree that the OP’s rhetoric is silly and over-the-top.

point out ‘how much of a badass he is or what a great thing he just did’—in that line. i’m not getting on soriano’s case for pointing at his family, except for the fact that the astros could have read it as disrespectful (i would’ve preferred he just run the bases, then celebrate and go over to his family, why make a show of it? but i’m not concerned with that). however, the can’t see me thing all the way around third base was a bit much.

i don't mind any handy to complain about.
i don’t mind a simple fist pump, just like i don’t mind a batter admiring his shot a little or getting excited.

You can't see him...
Or the ball after it was crushed. How can you find a place to complain about a walkoff slam in the 13th that gives this Cubs team some great momentum for the next 2 days?
i don't like showboating period
but at least ryan braun is a top hitter in the game who can back up his antics with production (though he’s slumped of late, his stats on the year are still far far far better than soriano’s)
well
go buy a Braun jersey or even better a Remetee and cheer for the Brewers

While you are at it, why don't you run those kids off your lawn? Face it, players today behave different than
the did 20 years ago. You have to remember that all of the players are coming from a younger age and what was considered taboo a few years ago is becoming common practice. The older players might not like it, but those guys are slowly leaving the game and the attitudes are leaving too. Don’t like the showboating? Don’t watch. No one is forcing you to. Personally, if a guy can hit a grand slam to win a game in the 13th inning, he can run around the bases with his pants around his head. If the opposing team doesn’t like it, the are free to get him out. They do have that option you know.

Showboating
Baseball is a team game. It is not all about Soriano, or anyone else who showboats around the bases. Yes, times are changing, but not all changes are for the better. Let’s not have baseball turn into football, where every minimal achievement is celebrated with over exuberance. What I’d say to Soriano, or anyone else who pulls that crap, is to show some respect for your opponent, for your teammates, and honestly, for yourself. It isn’t all about you.
I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"
What game have you been watching? Have you seen some of the celebrating on walk-offs
around the league? You call it showboating, others call it celebrating.

"much deserved" plunking?
Not many people deserve to be plunked, even if they over-celebrated. Soriano may have been over the top, but I don’t think it was disrespectful. I think people often confuse enthusiasm with arrogance.
I think plunking is more immature thank what Soriano did. If Oswalt tries it, will I see you castigating him? Is that what baseball is now? A bunch of crybabies wanting vengence on each other? It’s only negative if it happens at your team’s expense. If Carlos Lee celebrated after a walk-off, I’m sure the Astros wouldn’t care.
enthusiasm can become disrespectful at a certain point.
the dogpile at homeplate is certainly not disrespectful, but i think soriano’s jog around the bases was.

Well, you should take that up with about 100 other players in the league, because I
have seen the same type of behavior from them on walk-off homeruns. So it’s not OK to jog around the bases and point to your family, but it’s OK to toss your helmut 20 feet in the air down the third-base line? Do you have a book that lists the proper behavior for celebrating a walk-off homerun?

I seriously don't understand
why people are bothered so much by this. Yeah you can be a little disappointed with Soriano if you disagree with his antics. But people are talking about what a horrible person he is and that he should get plunked. It’s ridiculous. This is a game. It’s not the military.
i'm not saying anything about his character, just his on the field personality.
i’m also not that bothered by it; i understand that this is now part of the game. i just think it is a lame part of the game and seems in line with t-shirt guns and the rest of that show. and as far as the plunking goes, that is also part of the game, and i have no problem with the astros if they decide to hit soriano on his backside.

do you just expect soriano to run the bases then the whole team just meets in the clubhouse without smiling, talking , cheering or any other kind of enthusiasm?
nope. i expect the scene to play out as it did.
and i found it a little embarrassing. it wasn’t at all sportsmanlike and it pissed off the other team. it was lacking in class. i’m not up in arms or anything, i simply think we could do better.

In the old days...
… an act like Soriano’s would find him catching a baseball in the back, or if the pitcher is really good, just flipping him with a couple of high-and-tights. And if the Astros choose to do that, I’d have no problem with it.
I’m glad the Cubs won. I’m glad he hit the home run, even when a single would do it. But it was one game in July, not the World Series. If you are a professional, you need to act like you have been there before. Put your head down, trot around the bases, celebrate with your teammates, but don’t pull that showboating crap.

Well we have been winning.....
Someone has to find something to complain about. :-P
2009 Cubs Record: 10-3 (9-3 home, 1-0 road)
The only reason I dont like it
is because of the possible repercussions. I remember back in 07 when Soriano had watched a home run of his from David Wells go out and the next day the Padres came out throwing at the Cubs. The end result was Derrek Lee taking a ball in his arm and getting in a fight with Chris Young and being suspended. Obviously, alot of things fell into place for that to happen, but there is no need to put your teamates in that sort of situation. I realize that this homerun was far more dramatic than the one against the Padres in 07 and it is cause for celebration, but there is no need to walk halfway to first.

I think he was just happy
to finally do something positive after going 0 for 5 and looking bad doing it, emotions came out, which really isn’t horrible to see from a guy who knows he should be doing alot better.
I think we saw something more subtle but similar to Lee early in the season, a little extra celebration when we would get a key hit.
When you are playing well you can ‘keep your cool’ a little easier, when you are struggling the emotions come out a little easier.
Hmmm let's see
Soriano is a huge WWE fan. He shows up for their shows, gives them free publicity and for that WWE gave him two opportunities to meet Cena in the last 4 months.
In return, Soriano does the “You can’t see me” as a mutual respect issue to him.
Cubs also had one of their most eventful wins all season…worthy of celebration.
Soriano also had his family there to watch him.
Only here will we see people actually complaining about a big victory.
Don’t you have work to do in the office?
There's an old phrase.............
………..that sums this up best, in my opinion.
“Act like you’ve been there”
Unfortunately these shameful patterns have developed throughout all sports, as players seemingly can’t just trot the bases, drop the football in the end zone, skate to the bench and knock gloves after a goal, turn to play defense after a dunk, etc., etc., etc.
Too many players feel compelled to feature these disgusting displays of showmanship, and it has nothing to do with the TEAM on which such individuals play.
Soriano’s antics last night were over the top. The posing at the plate, flipping of the bat, and on and on and on. Just drop the bat, run around the bases, then get your “ass hammered” (thanks Matt Stairs) at home plate by your teammates.

I certainly appreciate your insightful thoughts on the subject. Like you I look forward though to returning to the glory days where Soriano would have been greeted at home play by an orderly assembly of players in top hats and monocles, giving a quite and dignified golf clap to him as he calmly trotted into home. Much like life, joy and celebration have no place in baseball.

I never challenged your background and stated explicitly that I couldn't care less about what you've done.
I stated that you shouldn’t judge someone and tell them to act like they’ve been there when you haven’t been there yourself. I went out on a limb and assumed you’ve never hit a game ending grand slam in a major league baseball game. I am sure if you had you wouldn’t be talking all this nonsense about how others ought to act because you would have enough sense not to care. I’m curious if you enjoyed Soriano’s 3 run bomb in the first today or if it was just too over-the-top for your delicate sensibilities.

You did assume..........
…………that I had never hit a game ending MLB GS, and to that end, you are correct.
I baited the discussion further by saying you don’t know my background, and therefore should not make such assumptions. You did pass judgment without sound foundation.
But my point was never as finite as a single GS in a single game. No, my perspective of this goes far beyond such a limited sample size.
Allow me to reiterate my initial comment:
“Act like you’ve been there.”
It’s a very straightforward remark, and whether you’ve played sports at a serious level or not, it’s something anyone can understand. In fact, it’s not just applicable to the sports world, but to all facets of life.
This is the point that you, and many others in this post, have missed. You can accept this as valid or not, but I’d say Barry Sanders laying a ball down in the end zone after a TD spoke volumes beyond the current “flavors du jour” with their hidden cell phones, absurd dances and other ridiculous, disgraceful behavior.
It really boils down to this: When you’re not that good, you’ve gotta find ways to attract attention. But when you are amongst the elite, you don’t have to blow your own horn.
If all of this makes ME seem self-obsessed or smug, well, I can live with that, because I’m not blowing my horn, but rather the brass of those professionals who know what it’s like to be at the top.

Celebrating an infield single and celebrating a game-winning walk-off grand slam are entirely different. It’s not like he turned into Leslie Nielsen calling a simple strike.
ESPN.........
………could be blamed for the antics of today’s players, highlighting the most outrageous behavior, leaving the next athlete to believe he has to one-up the last disrespectful dork.
And I don’t buy the walk off “differential”, at least not in this case. The Cubs needed one run to win, and the Soriano hit, whether it left the yard or not, accomplished the task. If they were down by three and the GS won the game, it’s a more emotional scenario. In neither case should Sori be given a hall pass for his asinine behavior.

And he should do that at the plate BEFORE he goes into his home run trot.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

The Giants' Pablo Sandoval...
…has this intricate pre-batting routine that’s not too far off from that dance.

What a jerk indeed!
How dare he? The guy “selfishly” hits a walk-off Grand Slam, he puts his family next to the Astro’s dugout so he can point at them, he jumps into his teammates at homeplate when they were obviously there to shake his hands in an orderly fashion, he assaults a woman in the front row with children, and to top it all off, he ruins somebody’s shaving cream by sticking his face in it.
What a jerk indeed!
After giving this topic some thought...I've decided I still don't give a fuck.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Soriano's antics are a complete disgrace to the game...
…and the Cubs and the league should put an end to it right now.
Sincerely,

ok
I disagree with you. The man hit a game-winning Grand slam home run, pointed to his wife and child, and likes to wave his hand in front of his face. As long as it doesn’t make him trip over a base, you have no real reason to get him to stop.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.
