Roster move with Dempster coming back?
With Dempster due to start tonite's game, someone obviously nees to be sent down. A pitcher makes sense right now. My guess is that Justin Berg is probably the odd man out. Samardzija may've been walking a thin line, but he looked ok last night and is probably safe. Jeff Stevens probably solidified his spot for now after last nite's outing. I like his arm. Any other thoughts on who is likely to get demoted?

it could be a position player as Lou may want to keep extra arms given 13 innings yesterday.
and Dempster is likely to only go 5 today. I would like to see LBR sent down to work on his hitting skills, including bunting…but it ain’t gonna happen.

Guzman and Gregg
didn’t even pitch yesterday, so it’s likely a pitcher to be sent down.

...and Marshall only pitched 1/3 of an inning, I'm sure he's available.

good point, i even forgot about that!
it’s definitely a pitcher that’s going to be sent down, just a matter of which one

I guess you guys are all confident:
a) Dempster goes 5 innings at a minimum and
b) we do not have a game that goes more than 10 innings tonight
Given how many arms are spent from yesterday, I don’t know why you don’t carry 13 at least for today. You can always switch things around after Dempster finishes up, but you are getting a guy back who hasn’t thrown in 3+ wks.
But I do agree that the bullpen sets up just fine if we only go 9-10 innings and Dempster goes 5. Let’s just hope for the best, I guess… (and we get no pitchers up in key hitting situations late in the game)

Then, who goes down when Patton has to come back?
And, I also expect to see BJ Ryan at some point (he would occupy roster spot #39 out of 40).
A deal is gonna have to be made that involves someone from the 40 man. And, for the love of god, figure out how to get Chad Fox off the 40-man roster please.

patton
can stay on rehab until mid august- then you hide him again for 2 weeks., the rosters expand and he is ours to keep.

Patton doesn't have to come back that early, does he?
He’s on the 15-day DL. There’s no time limit on that, is there?

i think
there is in the case of rule 5 guys. Its mean to keep a team from being able to just DL a guy for an entire season. I could be wrong but I think the Cubs have a 30 day period on which Patton can be on the farm on his rehab assignment.
by CalCalender on Jul 28, 2009 11:17 AM CDT up reply actions
I know there's a limit to rehab assignment time...
… 20 days, I believe. But they don’t have any rule as to how long he can be on the DL before that starts, do they?
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
not sure
I think the rule is meant for situations like Patton- its not a serious injury so the Cubs just cant hide him there. But what if the guy broke his leg?
I’m not exactly sure on this one.
by CalCalender on Jul 28, 2009 11:20 AM CDT up reply actions
doesn't he have to be on the active roster for a minimum number of games, also?
or it rolls over to the next year, in the case of a serious injury like you mentioned. I could be wrong, but that’s my interpretation of the rule. I’m trying to look it up now..

He's met the minimum number of days on active roster...
And even if he hadn’t, he could get an additional 30 days in September when the rosters expand. The team could have continued to hide him.
Of course, it’s currently moot as he apparently began his rehab assignment yesterday.

Thanks.
I was pretty sure there was a minimum, but didn’t know exactly what it was or that he had met it. That’s good news!

Haven't found the info yet on my search...
But, I did find this gem of a nugget
The Rule 5 draft has opened opportunities for teams to take other team’s top prospects who may not be ready for the major leagues. A prominent recent example is Johan Santana, who was chosen in the 1999 Rule 5 draft by the Florida Marlins when the Houston Astros declined to put him on their 40-man roster. After the Marlins traded Santana to the Minnesota Twins for minor leaguer Jared Camp, the Twins kept him on their roster for the 2000 season, despite the pitcher’s subpar performance that season (6.49 earned run average) which was unsurprising given his youth and inexperience.

Hmmm...
2007 – Randy Wells (of course we knew that)
2006 – Josh Hamilton (of course we knew that too)
2005 – Dan Uggla (starting in All-Star game the same year
2004 – Shane Victorino
2003 – Willy Tavaras
2002 – Shane Victorino (the first time)
1999 – Johan Santana
1999 – Derrick Turnbow
1997 – Scott Podsednik

Roberto Clemente. He turned out okay.
It's 30 days for pitchers...
but Patton has already started his rehab assignment as of last night
by SouthernCub on Jul 28, 2009 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions
I don't know what the specifics are for Rule 5 guys
But, I’m also not totally familiar with the DL rules.
Patton made a rehab start last night for Tennessee. How many rehab days does he get?

He has 29 more days barring another injury...
now, whether or not they use all 30 days is another story. And they can always have a “setback” during the rehab and DL him again.
Patton has already met the requirements for MLB active roster service time for a Rule 5 player. Since he played yesterday, it’s now just a matter of the standard MLB rehab assignment rules, which say 20 days for a position player and 30 days for a pitcher.
So if they give Patton 30 days, he’d come back in late August. I think it would have made more sense to wait until Aug 1 to start his rehab, unless they intend to bring him back.
by SouthernCub on Jul 28, 2009 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions
Well, at least that gives us pretty much the entire month of August to keep hin in AA
Thanks for the 411

No problem... and yeah, there's should be plenty of time...
Of course, the “should be” is the operative word. That assumes the organization is thinking along the same lines with regard to when to bring Patton back.

That's what they did with Angel Guzman last year.
They kept him in extended ST until early Aug, and then sent him on rehab for 30 days. They activated him when rosters expanded in September.
(Guzman was recovering from TJ surgery.)
Hey, it's a new century!

The only difference is that Patton has already started rehab...
which means that, unless he has a setback, he’ll have to come up before Sept 1.
yes and no?
from the tremendous BizofBaseball website, the ninety day rules seems to apply. If he is a/ on the roster for 90 days (he’s at 88 or 89 at least) and doesn’t get optioned to the minors, he’s ours come September. So, if my reading is correct, after he comes back from ‘rehab’ after 30 days, he has to report to Chicago. But if he gets a ‘strained calf muscle’ or ‘turf toe’ the next day, he can return to the DL. Kinda weak, but it appears ‘legit’.
Yup...
he’s met the 90 day requirement (I think he’s at 91 or 92 days). And even if he hadn’t, he’d easily surpass it in September.
I’m not sure why the Cubs didn’t just wait until early-August to start his rehab, because then they could just call him up on September 1. And they could use his DL spot as roster flexibility if they happen to make the postseason.
Now, he’ll either have to come up in late-August or experience a rehab setback. But starting Patton’s rehab assignment yesterday has me wondering if the team is planning on calling him up sooner than Sept 1 anyway.

I agree... Stevens has looked useful...
I’m still not sure why the Cubs started Patton’s rehab assignment yesterday rather than waiting until Sunday. Had they waited, they could have simply kept him on assignment until rosters expand on Sept 1. Now, they either have to create another injury for him or he’ll have to be called up in late-August.

berg or shark
Shark might have saved himself a little last night with the DP ball, if he takes the loss its probably him.
I think Shark will be sent down to start.
With the injuries to the starting rotation recently, he may be needed to start and sending him to the minors to be stretched out might be the best thing to do right now.
Hey, it's a new century!
Hm, that's actually a pretty good idea...
…which makes it highly doubtful to actually occur.

Ideally Dempster avoids one of his deep count games and get at least 5 or even into the 6th. Lou has shown the willingness to use Gregg for more than an inning lately so that could ease some concerns.
Problem with sending down a position player is that the player can’t be recalled for 10 days, barring another injury. I HOPE they don’t have to worry about another DL worthy injury for a while. So, I think I pitcher is most likely to be sent down.
