Should Cubs pursue Lee and Martinez from Cleveland? (Revised Title)

According to Ken Rosenthal, et al at foxsports.com (see here), the Indians want to package Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez. The Cubs could conceivably offer Geo Soto (injured, but not forever), Jake Fox and two top minor league pitchers.

A bona fide top starter and a veteran catcher who can still hit-- this would be a move worth making, especially in light of the Cardinals' recent moves.

It might be safe to say that 2009 is this Cubs roster's last chance to win the WS. Hendry is likely gone next year, and Lilly, Lee, Aram and Dempster will be one year older. So this is the year (again!)

The Cubs aren't a small market team.

This window of opportunity stuff is overrated.

It's been 100+ years

Maybe so, but they are closer now than they have been in decades, so I’d like to see them go for it. The risk is that they have some lousy seasons in a few years because they’ve depleted the farm system. So what?

The Indians aren't going to want Geo.

They have a great C coming up through the minors they snagged from the Dodgers last year. If the Cubs were going to trade Geo for V-Mart, they’d need a third party – say, the Padres, who have a plethora of corner bats, but no C.

I also don’t think Geo+Fox is close to the price of V-Mart and Lee.

+1

This Soto out of shape business has been really overblown. How the hell does anybody know that his performance this year is related to his weight? Maybe he has been hurt. Maybe he has been having problems off the field. Maybe he is suffering from the dreaded sophomore jinx or maybe he just is having a bad year. The Cubs have acknowledged that his participation in the WBC retarded his progress and he never really got going. Either way, I really don’t think anyone on this blog has the expertise to really know why he is has struggled this year and there certainly is no proof that it is related to his weight.

Totally agreed and Rec'd.

I think many fans are leaping on the weight thing to make easy jokes at Soto’s expense. Look, it’s entirely possible he’s somewhat overweight – and it’s pretty clear that he’s struggling a little more to stay in shape – but I’ve been saying all season that he doesn’t look that different.

Here’s the question: Is he getting injured more because he’s heavier and out of shape? Or is he heavier and out of shape because he’s gotten injured more? None of us can say for sure.

Martinez

Don’t discount the fact that Cleveland probably wouldn’t mind getting rid of Martinez. Yes, he can hit. No, he absolutely cannot catch. He’s a DH or a below-average 1B and an even worse C. Cleveland recognizes this and with him due for another large contract they wouldn’t mind getting rid of him.

I’m not sure about VMART as our everyday catcher, wasn’t cleveland trying to move him to 1b earlier this year?

I expect

a Sanchez, Duke, Grabow deal. Think that’s too much? Hendry has a tendency to make deals for beyond this year, Sanchez has an option for next, Duke is under team control for another 2 years and Grabow I ’think" is still arbitration eligible. If not all three at least Duke and Grabow. They would both be inexpensive and allow Marshall to stay in the pen, plus add another lefty to the pen. Marshall is very valuable as a long man and swing starter and with our history of injuries this season, we need pitching. I can deal with the Baker/Fontenot platoon if that is the plan for this year.
