I did NOT want this

but I don’t see how you do not call up Fuld now.

I posted this in the game thread...

tough break (no pun intended) but not sure how you don’t bring Fuld back up. Bad thing is, they don’t have that Right hander to spell Kosuke vs. Lefties.

Not sure Lou would do that...

True.

Fortunately, the Cubs won’t face any lefties during the Marlins series, nor in Cincinnati, so they don’t need the platoon starter.

Well at least this is a case

where is THEORY you have a replacement who pretty closely resembles the injured player except of course he is a lefty.

But in that case...

Why platoon Dome with another lefty? You might as well just let him play everyday, and use Fuld for spot starts when any one of the outfield spots needs a day.

Someday we'll go all the way...

So.. DL/injury stints this year now include

Carlos Zambrano, Aramis Ramirez, Ted Lilly, Ryan Dempster, Rich Harden, Angel Guzman, and Reed Johnson with Soto, Soriano, Bradley. and Gregg all missing games or slowed by injury time. Consider this..of the current guys who actually play regularly, only Lee, Theriot, Fontenot, Dome, Hill, Wells, Marmol, Fox, Hoffpauir, Blanco, and Heilman have been 100% all year. The fact that this team has held it together says a lot about both our farm system and their determination. Props to our guys!

Lee hasn't been 100%

He’s missed time as well with his neck and back.

We lost Marmol for about a week too.

Very early in the year he had a knee problem and couldn’t pitch the series in St.Louis.

Yes.. good point on those..actually then you can include Fox who also did not start with the team..

So, now it’s down to Riot, Font, Dome, Heilman, Hoffpauir, and Hill from the opening day 25 man roster who haven’t gotten dinged this year.

Fuld = Johnson

Before anyone argues, let’s look at the facts:

Johnson has not been hitting lately.
Johnson and Fuld might be an equivalent on defense.
Fuld was hot at the plate before and solid leadoff.
Fuld has a little more speed on basepath.

This DL stint is probably the least of all their DL’s for the year (except for Aaron Miles).

However, I will miss him solely that I’m a big fan of Reed’s.

by ak123 on Jul 29, 2009 5:58 PM CDT reply actions

um I think

Fuld is tad better defensively. Catching is equal but Fuld’s arm is better. Also I think the speed differential is also more than a little
That said I love RJ. Fuld did not do well coming off the bench to pinch hit. RJ had struggled as well but was probably better than Fuld
there.

You're absolutely right

The fact is, I have to be careful I word things on here from a little or a lot. I try to avoid people giving nasty responses.

When it comes to coming off the bench the only pinch hit I can remember lately that RJ hit was last nights. My mind has been so blurry lately I can’t remember Fuld’s pinch hits very well. Actually, I remember a couple outs he made but he had really good at-bats and those outs might have been due to good defense.

by ak123 on Jul 29, 2009 6:16 PM CDT up reply actions

You're partially right, I think.

It’s just that Reed hits LHP really well and I doubt Fuld will be able to do that since he’s LH himself. But as complete players, I’d say you’re on track.

Randy Wells - You continue to astound me.

by DGU on Jul 29, 2009 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Reed is a very likable player, but...

Aside from a great month of May, he has been absolutely awful this year. You never want to see a guy get hurt, especially one of your own, but this really isn’t going to be detrimental to the Cubs at all.

I think Jay Payton or Cody Ross would be a good pickup.

Hendry should be in the market for a spare outfielder

Dump Micah Hoffpauir and bring up Sam Fuld. But go out and acquire a spare outfielder too. There are definitely rent-a-player types to be had in the market right now.

Cubs will win 79 to 83 games. Season has been over for weeks. St. Louis will eventually run away with this division. And you can print it. BLou (7/21/09)

by BLou on Jul 29, 2009 7:38 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed

Hoffpauir has really lost a lot of his value ot the team. He hasn’t been hitting well, we have a surplus of lefties in the outfield, and he’s a poor defender.

Even when healthy Reed wasn’t hitting.

Fuld is a nice player for a team with a bunch of right handed outfielders.

Fox is a great hitter, is adequate in left, can’t play center, and would be stretched in right (plus Lou won’t play him when he’s the only backup catcher).

We’ve talked about Teahen in the past, he could be a nice option now, and perhaps Jake Fox would interest them (plus more). Josh Willingham might be an option too, and IIRC he used to catch, so that’d be a plus. Willingham might be too good (and expensive to acquire) to relegate to 4th OF.

So Teahen is my vote.

his career splits v LH pitchers arent good

but they arent dreadful

.259/.316/.401

although this year they are .303/.348/.432

He can throw a fastball at 87MPH and make you look like a fool. He can spray lines drives to right field. He can put up with crappy offense and take the loss. He is Randy Wells. He is the most interesting pitcher in the world. Stay healthy, my friends.

I agree, I've grown tired of seeing playoff contenders in the NL make trade after trade

And nothing to help our problems. I’m sure that we have trouble getting takers from the prospects that the Cubs are willing to part with…but there sure have been some valuable players getting traded that would be worth a look for sure. Still are in my mind…loosen those purse strings Hendry, and let’s hope that the ownership is willing to let the trades be made.

by Sandberg's evil twin on Jul 29, 2009 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe it will be So

Taguchi, I’d much rather see Fuld, but Hendry may think Taguchi fits the niche better.

by BatCubFan on Jul 29, 2009 8:13 PM CDT reply actions

Ugh I hope that isn't true.

Much as So has been valuable in the past, he’s really getting up there in age and I’d like to see Fuld not being able to cut it before you dredge Taguchi out of the cobwebs. A ton more upside to Fuld in my opinion.

Granted it was four prospects, but Cedeno and Miles are a wash to me…both stink, can run and can’t hit.

so they may not need a platoon partner for Dome for a while.

Interesting point...

After seeing Fuld and Fox perform for the Cubs I almost forgot about Scales. While I don’t think he would work out long term, I doubt you can count on a rookie like Fuld to do that either and anyone called will be platooned or PH. It’s frustrating when these rookies just don’t play many positions well.

by Sandberg's evil twin on Jul 29, 2009 10:10 PM CDT up reply actions

only problem is he's a lefty

so that doesn’t really do anything for us. Fuld and Fukudome can fill that role..

How about Fuld, and Victor Martinez?

Fill in w/Fuld in the OF. And, since the Indians have given up, the are also rumored to be wanting to get rid of Martinez. Oh, wait, $$$.

by Nibbles on Jul 29, 2009 10:10 PM CDT reply actions

Fuld didn't play last night for Iowa. I'm guessing he'll be the call up.

He makes the most sense. He can play center and Dome can shift to RF for Bradley against righties.

by thehat34 on Jul 30, 2009 6:16 AM CDT reply actions

The Sun Times

is reporting the Cubs are looking at Teahen and Hermida as a left-handed complement to Bradley.

I like the idea. First, it makes us better. Second, it takes the pressure off Bradley to produce from the left side. But they are both on one year deals, so their cost should’t be tremendous, and hopefully Bradley will start hitting again by next season and we’re not committed to a platoon for 3 years.

by SonnyJ9 on Jul 30, 2009 10:30 AM CDT reply actions

Teahen isn't the best option starting at a corner...

…which is why so many were against acquiring him this off-season.

As a lefty bat off the bench that can play 5 positions (the four corners and 2B), he’s useful although the Cubs already have a right-handed but otherwise similar version of that player in Jeff Baker. The problem is that, unlike Reed Johnson, neither Hermida nor Teahen can handle CF.

Reed's Comments

Here are Reed’s comments on his injury from his blog. Doesn’t sound too serious at least.

http://reedjohnson.mlblogs.com

On the DL- again

I’ll be back, that’s for sure. It’s nothing really serious. There’s just some pain right now from the fracture and it’s not allowing me to function the way I want to. Hopefully in the next couple weeks, I can get some activities in and hopefully, as we get into that third week, I’ll be getting into some serious baseball activity. I don’t think the fracture has a chance of displacing, so that’s good. That means it’s more pain threshold than anything. That’s kind of where I’m at right now.

Samardzija says he can play center? We’ll see. I’ve seen him shag. He’s all right.
