Corey Patterson Released
Nationals released outfielder Corey Patterson.
Patterson was 2-for-15 with six strikeouts in an earlier stint with the Nationals this season. He hit .274/.318/.422 in 283 plate appearances for Triple-A Syracuse. Patterson will likely latch on with another organization's Triple-A affiliate.
I wouldn't mind seeing him in our minor league system again. At least this time there would be no pressure and with a minor league contract we could send him down whenever we wanted.

Can't believe he's toast.
That knee injury he had……he was on his way to a break out season. Oh how things change.

He might be the stupidest player in all of M(i)LB
I was one of the biggest fans of Patterson’s as he rose through the organization. But every time I heard him interviewed, I would feel worse. The comment near the end of his Cubs tenure where he said that (paraphrasing) he knew how to hit and wasn’t going to change his approach at the plate…
What’s amazing is now that everybody has a book on how to get him out (throw it at chin level and watch him flail at it), he’s not even a decent AAAA player any more. To not be able to stay on the 40-man roster of the worst team in MLB, that’s just sad.

I would rather leave CF unoccupied
than watch Corey Patterson play it for the Cubs.
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

I don't see it happening
Hendry could have picked up Patterson just by buying a round of Five Guys’ burgers for the Nationals team, coaches, and executives, and tossing in a random bench guy from Peoria or Boise.

Agreed.
Or, OK…OK…just to be a little more rational – I’d rather see Sean Marshall out there.

I don't want anything to do with this.
I’d rather have Neifi Perez, Jose Macias, and Joey Gathright. And that’s saying something.

Hey, at least he's consistent
.252 AVG, .290ish OBP, a home run and a walk every 2-3 weeks.
He’ll fit in nicely in the Northern League.

It's called the draft
maybe you have heard of it? Clogging up your system with AAAA players like CPat and Dubois is a sign that you are not drafting and developing talent.

The fall of Corey Patterson is a shame.
It’s really sad to think true talents like him, Prior, Hill, and Wood (yeah I said it) went from being so promising, to so futile. I don’t blame scouting for this, rather bad luck.

I blame scouting for Patterson
Scouts should have realized that he was too bleeping stupid/stubborn to make any changes to his game. Knee injury or not, Patterson was never going to lay off of the eye-high fastball, and once the league figured that out, his days were numbered.
It's a simple question, Doctor: would you eat the moon if it were made of ribs??

Why is it a shame?
Players flame out all the time. He had talent — but it appears he couldn’t adapt at the MLB level. Maybe he’s just a 4A player.
There’s no shame in that, especially if he did what he could with what now seems to be limited assets.
Rich Hill may be in that same category.
Prior had injury problems, as did Wood. That’s a part of this game
Most players in professional baseball never make the major leagues.

Um.....?
As a fan of the Cubs, it’s a shame when you see really talented young players in your system fizzle out. Just because it’s “part of the game” you’re not allowed to feel sorry for them? WTF?!

Well, I see your point
but Patterson did make his way to MLB. He was able to play at the highest level. His career may or not be over. He was pretty well compensated. Major league careers can be short. Hopefully, he enjoyed his time, and again — he still may be signed by somebody.
Baseball is a business, so I don’t feel ‘sorry’ for professional athletes unless — their careers are cut short by injury. Even though I have slammed Mark Prior in the past, in that situation – you can make a case of promise unfulfilled. However, he has been paid millions to be unable to pitch, so, that should soften the blow.
But a player who’s career might be over after 4 or 5 years ….that’s just the way it is. I don’t think tears need to be shed.

He is probably
one of the most infuriating the Cubs ever had. So much talent but nowhere near the results. Played a decent center field though.

Wow...
with the amount of talent, not to mention money, the Yankees have, it would be pretty shocking to see them sign a guy who was dropped from the Nationals.
Nothing personal agaisnt Corey, but his career should be laid to rest at this point.

I went to look at his numbers
The guy just never understood the value of a walk. Didn’t do it in the minors and certainly not in the majors. Getting Dusty Bakers as his manager didn’t help either.
I remember always thinking how his speed and power were a real nice combo, but it doesn’t work if you are unwilling to ever take a walk.
Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

I had to look this up and could not believe it, but since 1977 Corey Patterson has played the most games for the Cubs in CF at 580. That’s embarrassingly amazing!

The only positive one could say about Corey Patterson...
…is that his career UZR numbers in centerfield are very, very impressive. In 7,564.1 innings, he’s put up a 40.9/8.7 UZR/UZR 150. But, seeing as how he’ll turn 30 in August, I’m not sure how much longer he’ll be able to sell himself as a defensive replacement.
