Heilaman can be an effective setup man
He just needs to start trusting his ability. He has sharp movement on his pitches and if he learns to go after the hitter he will easily become a reliable setup man.

It’s risk reward, it’s percentages. You take down Dome & Hill, just on the off chance that you might get one frickin’ run, then you have no back-up catcher should Hill get injured, and you are forced to use someone who isn’t a catcher behind the dish.

There's about a 1/4 chance Soto gets a hit, and about a 2/5 chance he gets on base.
I know the odds of needing a backup catcher are pretty slim, but if you need one you need one. I wouldn’t want to see Jake Fox or Carlos Marmol in that situation.

by drewishdrewid on Jul 3, 2009 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because the continuous at-bats
That he’s been getting, in which he hasn’t hit, because there is something wrong with him (knees) he’s just going to magically start hitting by continuing to play?
by hmlee on Jul 3, 2009 4:09 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
if that's what the problem is
then he should be on the DL. I have to believe that Lou is not subservient to his players, and therefore sat Sori to give him some rest, and then put him back out there to start hitting again.
I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. [ibid] This is the kind of fan I am.
by drewishdrewid on Jul 3, 2009 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think subservience has anything to do with it
But I CAN see it being the case, given what we know about Sori, for him to lie and say that he’s fine, that his knees aren’t that bad, because he wants to play everyday and feels responsible for the offense with Rami out. Unless a guy is physically unable to walk, it’s hard for trainers / managers to know how bad pain is if the player won’t tell them.
by hmlee on Jul 3, 2009 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs

by drewishdrewid on Jul 3, 2009 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn't be surprised
if the benching for two days had to do with it, but ultimately, Lou might WANT Sori to be healthier than he is, because if he is healthy, his bat is very useful
by hmlee on Jul 3, 2009 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
well,

I just want him on the DL
because I really do think he’s hurt and I think that might help him. Imagine going up there for every at-bat with your knees aching in the back of your head… how are you supposed to concentrate on the strike zone?
by hmlee on Jul 3, 2009 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think that's extreme, I hope no one is serious about that
