he has his moments
he does have pretty nice stuff. He just gets behind too often and nibbles.
The nibbling is what gets him in trouble, methinks
Consensus seems to be that he should attack the zone more.

More like, Heliaman needs to go after the hitter more
And stop nibbling on the corners of the K zone.

Heilaman can be an effective setup man
He just needs to start trusting his ability. He has sharp movement on his pitches and if he learns to go after the hitter he will easily become a reliable setup man.
I am actually starting to have some confidence in heilman
Every player should be accorded the privilege of at least one season with the Chicago Cubs. That's baseball as it should be played - in God's own sunshine. And that's really living."
I think we're very close to having a good top to bottom pitching staff..
One more lock-down late-inning guy would be good. But who knows… Marshall, Guzman, Gregg, Marmol, Heilman, (insert someone else from iowa/trade) – I can live with that.

If you go with Soto there, then you have spent your back-up catcher in a potential extra inning game. Baker was the right call. Now they still have Soto for later.

by Jimmyeatworld on Jul 3, 2009 3:44 PM CDT up reply actions
You can't think like that when you're the home team.
Basehit, run scores, 3 outs away from a win.
It was a bad decision.
No, it wasn't.
It’s common practice. It’s smart baseball.
I'm a truth teller, I'm a risk taker, I'm like Johnny Cash - I walk the line...

Okay...
Well then by that logic, Soto should never get into this game, making your “Now they still have Soto for later” statement contradictory.
no
you simply use him as your last PH.

C'mon...
It’s risk reward, it’s percentages. You take down Dome & Hill, just on the off chance that you might get one frickin’ run, then you have no back-up catcher should Hill get injured, and you are forced to use someone who isn’t a catcher behind the dish.
I'm a truth teller, I'm a risk taker, I'm like Johnny Cash - I walk the line...
by Jimmyeatworld on Jul 3, 2009 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions
I know that...
And it’s a risk I’d be willing to take.
Your signature line doesn’t go along with your mentality on this one…
Then leave Soto in to catch and let him PH
and then sub in pitcher for pitcher

There's about a 1/4 chance Soto gets a hit, and about a 2/5 chance he gets on base.
I know the odds of needing a backup catcher are pretty slim, but if you need one you need one. I wouldn’t want to see Jake Fox or Carlos Marmol in that situation.
Exactly.

I don't think anyone
was advocating for it to be a permanent thing… but a DL stint for Sori – when there’s obviously something wrong, would be nice.
I think Sori
needs rest. But he can’t start hitting again without playing.

Sori doesn’t need to go on the DL, he needs to get some at bats and break out of it

Because the continuous at-bats
That he’s been getting, in which he hasn’t hit, because there is something wrong with him (knees) he’s just going to magically start hitting by continuing to play?
if that's what the problem is
then he should be on the DL. I have to believe that Lou is not subservient to his players, and therefore sat Sori to give him some rest, and then put him back out there to start hitting again.
I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. [ibid] This is the kind of fan I am.
by drewishdrewid on Jul 3, 2009 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't think subservience has anything to do with it
But I CAN see it being the case, given what we know about Sori, for him to lie and say that he’s fine, that his knees aren’t that bad, because he wants to play everyday and feels responsible for the offense with Rami out. Unless a guy is physically unable to walk, it’s hard for trainers / managers to know how bad pain is if the player won’t tell them.
Lou's been a manager for a long time.
I have to believe he sees through that.
I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. [ibid] This is the kind of fan I am.
by drewishdrewid on Jul 3, 2009 4:17 PM CDT up reply actions
I wouldn't be surprised
if the benching for two days had to do with it, but ultimately, Lou might WANT Sori to be healthier than he is, because if he is healthy, his bat is very useful
well,
maybe that’s true too. I think that if we win today, he sits tomorrow.
I'm a Cubs FANATIC. They are my team, through thick and thin. [ibid] This is the kind of fan I am.

I just want him on the DL
because I really do think he’s hurt and I think that might help him. Imagine going up there for every at-bat with your knees aching in the back of your head… how are you supposed to concentrate on the strike zone?
I think that's extreme, I hope no one is serious about that
I do think if a guy is on a tear, OF who are struggling might need to sit a game
If it weren't for the gutter, my mind would be homeless.
