Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Atlantabraves_304x337

Buster Olney said a few days ago that the Braves would entertain offers for their 26 year old shortstop (who makes 450k) Yunel Escobar. He is a plus bat, a solid defender, and would move Theriot to his more appropriate position at second.

They are looking for a bat in return. Apparently Cox doesn't like the guy.

I couldn't even speculate what we'd have to send them in return, but I think he would be a good fit given his low salary, his productive bat, his position, and his age. I don't care if he's a jerk if he makes the team win more.

What would it take?

I'm not sure why we'd want him...

Theriot is servicable, and Blanco is a natural shortstop playing out of position at 2nd. Escobar showed some pop, but had cooled of the past 2 years… still a .300 hitter for his career, his and Theriot’s numbers are pretty similar…

In 63 games this year, Escobar has 11 errors, compared to Theriot’s 6 in 74. Theriot has more steals, but has been caught more.

Bottom line, there’s not much reason to trade for a position where we already have the same, if not a better player already there and under contract.

Unless they also want to send Mike Gonzalez, of course.

He wouldn't

be replacing Theriot in the lineup, he’d be replacing Fontenot (or Blanco).

Escobar...

…is a bad seed. He seems to lack character and there is a reason that Cox wants to dump a guy with a ton of talent.

Exactly.

Isn’t he the guy who whined that he had been hit by a pitch when he really wasn’t?

Since Ryan was drafted in 2001...

There has been exactly one year (2005) where he played 2B more than anywhere else. I really don’t get the whole “move him back to his natural position” idea. SS is his natural position. And he hasn’t even played a single inning at 2B since 2007.

Theriot is fine at SS, and a great value. Unless a Hanley Ramirez becomes available, it’s a waste of time to talk about other options.

I don't like him

I think he’s a sneaky player. Maybe that’s just because of his BS HBP against the Cubs earlier but still….don’t like him.

I never liked him

His little bat flip always really annoyed me. I always thought he was good player though. His first series of his career was against the Cubs and I remember thinking about how good he was.

All else equal, I expect him to be much better than Theriot the next 3 years

but the “all else” includes health, and Escobar has had his share of injuries. And I don’t see the Cubs matching up with the Braves’ wants at this point.

Braves have been trying to dump him since going after PV.

This doesn’t surprise me that much.
